Am 23. März 1944 explodiert in der Via Rasella im Herzen Roms eine Bombe und tötet 33 Mann des Polizeiregiments "Bozen". Die deutsche Antwort auf diesen verheerenden Partisanenanschlag sollte als die "grosste Repressalerschießung in Westeuropa während des Zweiten Weltkriegs" in die Geschichte eingehen und zu einem wichtigen Symbol deutscher Schreckensherrschaft in Italien werden: Die Erschießung von 335 italienischen Geiseln in den Höhlen der Fosse Ardeatine bei Rom. Die Fosse Ardeatine wurden in Italien nach 1945 zu einem wichtigen Erinnerungsort.

Revolutionary theories are most useful when they attempt to define and interpret the causes and mechanisms of revolutions. However, when they attempt to forecast the outcomes and the impact of revolutions on their indigenous societies, they are largely unsuccessful. This article deals with the impact of the Young Turk revolution on three non-dominant ethnic groups in the Ottoman Empire: Armenians, Arabs, and Jews. It will argue that the revolution resulted in the creation of a multiplicity of public spheres among the ethnic groupS.1 This multiplicity of public spheres became the main medium through which these ethnic groups internalized the Young …

Known as Maine’s city of ships, Bath sits on the shores of the Kennebec River, about 15 miles from the Gulf of Maine and 40 miles up the coast from Portland. Though small in population, Bath’s impact on Maine, the rest of United States, and even on the world has been anything but small. Today Bath is known mostly for the Bath Iron Works, which supplies the US Navy with a large portion of its fleets, however, in Bath’s early days it built large, wooden yachts and schooners mostly for trade, not war. Thomas J. “Ozzie” Conners enlisted in the U.S. Army after his graduation from Bridgewater State College in 1965. After basic training, Conners joined the 196th Light Infantry Brigade and was transported to Vietnam. As a member of Company C, 27th Regiment (the Wolfhounds), Conners was wounded within a month of his deployment, during the Operation Attleboro campaign.

The Octofoil is the offical publication of the Ninth Infantry Division Association, Inc., an organization formed by the officers and men of the 9th Infantry Division in order to perpetuate the memory of fallen comrades, preserve the esprit de corps of the Division, promote peace and serve as an information bureau about the 9th Infantry Division. The Association is made up of 9th Infantry veterans from WWII and Vietnam, spouses, widows and lineal descendants.

When javelin throwers are told to be ready, Xenophon's phrasing appears, for instance, "He ordered the targeteers to carry javelin on strap, and the bowmen to hold arrow on string" (Anabasis 5.2, Rouse tr.). This context shows that the spear-throwers' readiness to throw, paralleling the archer with arrow nocked, was some preparation with a strap, sling, or thong. In addition to the warfare usage, Greek hunters also used a sling with their hunting spears. The hunter in Achilles Tatius 2.34 narrates, "I wound the thongs on my javelin ... " (Winkler tr.)

Why men fight is a particularly apt question to ask about the American soldier in World War I. Unlike Europeans in 1914, Americans went to war with their eyes wide open. They had already seen the worst of industrial warfare both on the high seas when the 1915 Lusitania sinking illustrated the dangers of ocean travel and on the battlefield when the 1916 battles of the Somme and Verdun left no doubt about the staggering casualties trench warfare engendered. Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The Regular Army of the United States played only a minor role in the American Civil War, a result of its being severally undermanned throughout that conflict. The Regular Army's lack of personnel was a product of an inefficient recruiting program that lacked the ability to compete for manpower with state volunteer regiments. The volunteers' higher pay, less rigorous duty, and generally high level of popular support at the state and local level caused most potential recruits to conclude that volunteer service was an easier path to take for fulfillment of military obligations.
