Practice Of Building Biomedical Innovation Highland In The United States And Its Enlightenment To China, Xiaoling Ma
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The modern pharmaceutical industry began with the large-scale production of chemical drugs. With the radical innovation of basic sciences, such as life science, biomedicine has become the focus of the pharmaceutical industry, with broad prospects. Since World War II, the U.S. government, enterprises and scientific community have cultivated the biomedical industry and scientific foundation, created an environment for innovation, established an effective life science innovation system, and gradually become the innovation highland of biomedicine in the world. Building a biomedical innovation highland is an important part of China to become the world science center. China can learn from U.S. experience …

Chromatic Dissensus: An Otherwise Archive Of Natural Dyes, 1700–1856, Luke Church
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Chromatic Dissensus: An Otherwise Archive of Natural Dyes, 1750-1856 works from the premise that the absences regarding subaltern life structuring the colonial archive are an epistemological problem—that is, navigating the colonial archive requires an interrogation of the parameters and practices of knowledge formation. Building from recent scholarship in early American studies which details how eighteenth-century colonial knowledge developed out of an epistemic entanglement between British colonists, diasporic Africans, and indigenous Americans, my dissertation queries the overdetermination of colonial knowledge and subsequent occlusion of alternative parameters for knowing. Enlisting aesthetics, in its broad definition as the theorization of sense making, my …

Coloniality, Western Science, And Critical Ethnic Studies In Stem Education, Latoya M. Strong
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this dissertation, I use a critical transdisciplinary approach to examine how the coloniality of Western Science impacts science education teaching, learning, and research. Weaving together Black geographies, settler colonialism, and decolonial theory, I illustrate how the historical, symbiotic relationship between colonization and Western Science created a culture that continues to shape modern science practices and science education. The coloniality of Western Science was codified into science education, resulting in three approaches to teaching, learning and research—the assimilationist model, the capitalist model, and the imperialist model. Moving from theory to research, I collaborated with STEM educators over six weeks to …

Social Identity, Scientific Practice, And The Production Of Social Knowledge: An Ethnographic Investigation Of American Social Psychology Laboratories, Donald V. Brown Jr
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Social identity has the ability to permeate a multitude of domains in everyday life. Therefore, the science of social psychology—influential due to its impact in education, social and public policy, and the law—rightfully foregrounds the presence of social identity categories in the theorizing and empirical work of the discipline. Many researchers consider social identities such as race and gender to be socially constructed categories. This allows researchers to understand these identities in light of their history, complexity, and relationships to each other. However, the practical application and use of social identities as socially constructed “objects of study” is uncommon in …

"Either On Account Of Sex Or Color": Policing The Boundaries Of The Medical Profession During Reconstruction, Adam Lloyd-Jones
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
In 1868, the American Medical Association (AMA) was asked to permit consultation with female physicians and admit them as delegates. In 1870, a delegation of Black doctors sought entrance to an Annual AMA meeting. The AMA refused entrance to both female and Black physicians. This paper argues that these meetings, and the question of inclusion for Black and female practitioners, arose out of the political climate that Reconstruction created. Expanding from previous scholarship, this paper further analyzes the role of Chicago doctor Nathan Smith Davis in the perpetuation of a white medical profession.
