Volume I of the Missions and Missionaries in California was compiled from original sources and was intended to serve as an introduction to the history of what was referred to as Upper or Alta California. This volume addresses the origin of the missions in Lower California, it's discovery, efforts to colonize the lower peninsula, the endeavors to establish a government, learn the language, introduction of agriculture, failure of the Spanish government to adequately fund the missions, establishment of various missions, the Jesuits decline, the Franciscan period; efforts to establish missions in Upper California by Fr. Engelhardt noted that much had bee written about those who first introduced Christianity and civilization in California but little was reliable due to ignorance, malice, exaggeration and misstatements. Up to 1785, Engelhardt consulted original Spanish documents and compared those with statements of H. H. Bancroft. According to the author, with regard to the missions from 1831 through 1850, Bancroft was almost the only authority offering any accurate information. He believed as to historic facts, that Bancroft's work was reliable and all the more valuable because it came from a non-Catholic source.

Immigration, Small Business And Assimilation: Three Stories Of Small-Time Capitalism On The Lower East Side, Marcus Hillman

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Small businesses in New York City have often been a catalyst to assimilation for individual immigrants, their families and their communities. For this capstone project, I have recorded conversations with three small-time entrepreneurs on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and created a narrative audio piece that explores some of the important and study-worthy characteristics of New York City including economic opportunities in the city, immigration, assimilation and the ways that New Yorkers share space, just to name a few. John Cassian (360-435 CE) started his monastic career in Bethlehem. He later traveled to the Egyptian desert, living there as a monk, meeting the venerated Desert Fathers, and learning from them for about fifteen years. Much later, he would go to the region of Gaul to help establish a monastery there by writing monastic manuals, the Institutes and the Conferences. These seminal writings represent the first known attempt to bring the idealized monastic traditions from Egypt, long understood to be the cradle of monasticism, to the West.

The Larrie and Bobbi Weil Undergraduate Research Award

This paper takes the unexpected position that early liberal thought developed in transformative events within the Anglican Church during the second half of the seventeenth century. The historical evolution of religion laid the foundation of English political and intellectual philosophy, as supported by works written by the branch of Anglican churchmen known as the Latitudinarians. I will argue that these ministers were foremost in advancing the argument for religious toleration because their religious writings held political consequence. Starting in 1769, the Spanish established missions in Alta California. A small band of soldiers, Franciscan priests and volunteers walked from Baja California to San Francisco Bay through semi-arid, scarcely populated land stopping occasionally to establish a location for a religious community. Usually two priests, a few soldiers and a few Indians from Baja California settled at the spot. Their only resources for starting an economy were themselves, a few animals and a nearby source of water. They attracted the local Indians to join the community and perform the work necessary to create a strong economy. After only a few …

Navigating the establishment of Mormon womanhood from 1872-1890 in the Exponent shows how Mormon women related to their outer world, their inner world, and themselves. This thesis analyzes the thoughts, feelings, and desires of a complex sociocultural grouping, and asks the reader to question their own attitudes towards gender and culture. The rhetoric of Mormon womanhood in the Exponent and the culture from which it stemmed have implications for understanding both “the rights of the women of Zion, and the rights of the women of all nations.”
