Swiss American Historical Society Review

Swiss cities such as Lucerne experienced an epochal transformation around 1900. Its medieval centre was expanded to include prestigious residential and commercial buildings, stations, postal and administrative offices, school buildings, hotels and villas. However, architecturally this modernisation bore the hallmarks of the past. Time for a virtual tour of Lucerne.

As the fifth volume published, previous volumes available from Tritt Family Research follow the familial lines of other Tritten/Tritt family members. This book concentrates on Jacob Tritten and his progeny.

New York and Geneva are the world’s most important centers of multilateral diplomacy. The shores of Lake Geneva attract almost five thousand visits from heads of state and government and other personalities every year. More than 4,000 conferences are held in Geneva, face-to-face or in hybrid formats. Geneva is home to 42 international organizations, 180 diplomatic missions and around 750 nongovernmental organizations.

Annemarie Schwarzenbach wrote this piece about Washington, D.C. shortly after her arrival in the city in late August 1936. She stayed on Waterside Drive at the home of Elizabeth Washburn Wright, the widow of Dr. Hamilton Wright, a specialist in tropical medicine but also a government-appointed anti-drug crusader in the battle against Chinese opium.

Starting as a frontier fur trade post in the 1830’s, Fort Laramie, Wyoming Territory, played a prominent role in western expansion. Purchased by the United States government in 1849, the fort’s location near immigrant trails and Native American homelands provided a front row seat to American history. It is estimated that over three hundred thousand people passed the fort during their migration westward. Of the multitude, many were Swiss, including Private Jacob Haudenschild, Sergeant Leodegar Schnyder, Dr. Rudolph B. Hitz and Captain Alfred von Wattenwyl.

On April 1, 2024, Bekah Stauffacher became the new President/ CEO of the Swiss Center of North America. Bekah replaces Beth Zurbuchen, who served as President for the past fifteen years and helped open a new center in 2008 in New Glarus, Wisconsin. With Beth retiring, Bekah has big shoes to fill! The Swiss American Historical Society has close ties with the Swiss Center of North America, where we held our annual meeting last October.

This paper argues that the mode and historical context in which piracy ascended in the Caribbean after the War of the Spanish Succession, as well as the historical interrelation between maritime technology and pirate tactics, coalesced into a diachronic Damocles Sword that resulted in the downfall of piracy in the Golden Age. Sanctioning piratical enterprises as a subconventional maritime strategy displayed a geopolitical reliance on piracy by great powers. However, the depraved treatment conventional sailors received across all major European navies generated a social stratum that eventually bore the Golden Age of Piracy, while simultaneously contributing significantly to British naval …

Liberation came at a high price to the already devastated city of Nijmegen during Operation Market Garden. It remained a frontline city for nearly seven months, during which time Nijmegen and the surrounding area came to be “occupied” by 1st Canadian Army. The presence of a friendly but foreign army was welcome but proved to be a mixed blessing as the local inhabitants sought to resume control of their lives in a time of shortages, suspension of normal morality and conflict between the Dutch themselves. Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Few Inklings scholars have explored William Lindsay Gresham’s life outside of the fact that he was married to Joy Davidman. His poem “The Friar of Oxford,” published here for the first time, shows a surprising level of engagement with C.S. Lewis’s ideas, combining war imagery with references to the Ransom Cycle and a “mushroom cloud” reference that may show he explored one of Lewis’s literary influences. The poem’s contents add to existing Gresham-Inklings scholarship, and show Gresham accomplishing the same goals that the Inklings and their associates like Dorothy L. Sayers accomplished in their “escapist” or mythopoeic works.

This paper examines the cultural, economic, and political barriers that legal and documented Moroccan immigrants experience throughout their assimilation journey and analyzes the various roles NGOs play to help them navigate these challenges to integration.
