By early 1915, the Habsburg Monarchy faced a self-inflicted strategic crisis of the first magnitude. Under thecommand of the ever fallible Conrad von Hötzendorf, successive Austrian offensives against the Serbs andthe Russians in 1914 had been outright failures. In both cases, Conrad had attempted to shift between frontswith insufficient resources and succeeded only in grinding the life out of the fragile, undermanned, andunderequipped Habsburg Army. As a result, the Russians were able to lay siege to the critical Austrian fortificationof Przemyśl, which guarded the great Hungarian Plain against Russian invasion. Am 23. März 1944 explodiert in der Via Rasella im Herzen Roms eine Bombe und tötet 33 Mann des Polizeiregiments "Bozen". Die deutsche Antwort auf diesen verheerenden Partisanenanschlag sollte als die "grosste Repressalerschießung in Westeuropa während des Zweiten Weltkriegs" in die Geschichte eingehen und zu einem wichtigen Symbol deutscher Schreckensherrschaft in Italien werden: Die Erschießung von 335 italienischen Geiseln in den Höhlen der Fosse Ardeatine bei Rom. Revolutionary theories are most useful when they attempt to define and interpret the causes and mechanisms of revolutions. However, when they attempt to forecast the outcomes and the impact of revolutions on their indigenous societies, they are largely unsuccessful. This article deals with the impact of the Young Turk revolution on three non-dominant ethnic groups in the Ottoman Empire: Armenians, Arabs, and Jews. It will argue that the revolution resulted in the creation of a multiplicity of public spheres among the ethnic groupS.1 This multiplicity of public spheres became the main medium through which these ethnic groups internalized the Young …

Portraits, especially those outside the medium of oil-on-canvas, have been a neglected and often disparaged subject in nineteenth-century French art history, despite their overwhelming prevalence during the time period. This paper contributes to our understanding of the modern manifestation of the portrait by examining a suite of lithographic portraits of cultural celebrities that appeared in the newly established art journal L’Artiste during the July Monarchy (1830-1848), the constitutional regime long associated with both the social and political rise of the bourgeoisie as well as the development of an extensive commercial and celebrity culture. A fundamental question of economic and technological history is why some civilizations adopted new and important technologies and others did not. In this paper, we analyze the effect that new technologies have on agents that legitimize rulers. We construct a simple political economy model which suggests that rulers may not accept a productivity-enhancing technology when it negatively affects an agent’s ability to provide the ruler legitimacy. However, when other sources of legitimacy emerge, the ruler will accept the technology as long as the new legitimizing source is not negatively affected. We use this insight to help explain the initial blocking …

Instead, I offer here a brief overview of the work of the church among the immigrants to the United States, drawing the attention of the readers of this book to particular points.

It can be said that an organized effort to preserve Danish language and culture has existed here in America since the beginning of the seventies. The immigrants considered it essential that they develop plans to strengthen and design general education for young adults. Among the immigrants who immediately joined the Church right from the beginning, there were few academics. However, because many knew about the højskole concept in Denmark, this concept became the foundation for their church-sheltered schools.

On April 18 of that year a public invitation was issued for the establishment of the society, and from April 18 till April 21 this year the society celebrated its 25th anniversary here in Clinton, Iowa.
