The French model of the nineteenth century led the way to modernity in establishing centralized administrative governments throughout Continental Europe. Several Napoleonic policies that led to the establishment of a modern centralized state were not positive in their effects on the local communities. Research widely categorizes resistance to the Napoleonic program as either militarily or economically based. This study uses the French court cases from the Court of Cassation dated 1804 to 1820 to provide a different interpretation to the discussion of local resistance to Napoleonic authority on an international level. On August 1, 1944, when the Armia Krajowa [AK] comprised of Polish partisans, took to the streets against the Germans, the only question in their minds was when Warsaw was going to be liberated. Instead of a quick victory, fighting raged on for sixty-three days ending with the eventual defeat of the AK. Even though the uprising failed to free Warsaw from the grasp of the Nazis, it did become a touchstone in the relationship between two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union.

The presentation of the body in early imperial Rome can be viewed as the manipulation of a semiotic language of dress, in which various hierarchies that both defined and limited human experience were entrenched. The study of Roman self-presentation illuminates the intersections of categories of identity, as well as the individual's desire and ability to resist essentializing views of Romanness (Romanitas), and to transform destiny through transforming identity. These categories of identity include gender; sexuality or sexual behavior; social status; economic status; ethnicity or place of origin; religion; and age. Published in 1985, Marguerite Duras' La Douleur is a collection of six autobiographical and semi-autobiographical short stories written during and just after the German Occupation. Echoing the French national sentiment of the 1970s and 1980s, these stories examine Duras' own capacity for good and evil, for forgetting, repressing, and remembering. The first of these narratives, the eponymous "La douleur," is the only story in the collection to take the form of a diary, and it is this narrative, along with a posthumously published earlier draft of the same text, that will be the focus of this thesis. In both versions, …

The English Civil War is one of the seminal events in Anglo-American constitutional history. Oceans of ink have been spilled in debating its causes, and historians have pointed to a number of salient divisions along economic, social, political, and religious lines. But a related, and equally important, question has gone largely ignored: what allowed the House of Commons, for the first time in English history, to play the lead role in opposing the Crown? How did the lower house of Parliament develop the constitutional self-confidence that would allow it to organize the rebellion against Charles I?

The ‘Eastern Question’, coined by European powers in the nineteenth century, came to denote the diplomatic and political problems posed by the decline of the Ottoman Empire. The historiography on the Eastern Question has been mostly Eurocentric, addressing the diplomatic history of the Eastern Question without taking into consideration the Eastern actors of the Question, that is, the Muslim Turks. In February 1843, Antoine Gardelaud, a former public servant, submitted to the General Department of Print Shops and Bookstores (in the Ministry of the Interior) an intent to publish a monthly periodical called La Chaire catholique (Catholic pulpit).i He named himself as sole owner and Caubet as printer. As its name indicated, this periodical centered on preaching and promised to publish good Catholic sermons from all over France and Rome.

Eisenhower is noted for his generalship in the Second World War and his presidential administration in a time of prosperity for the nation, while Hoover is often remembered only for his unpopular presidency during the Great Depression . The 95th Bomb Group Memorial Foundation and its Unit History Committee commissioned Rob Morris to research and write the history of this American fighting company, which was the most highly decorated bomb group to participate in the Second World War. With this book being a product of such a request, it is understandable that a reader might worry that the author would pay homage to the group rather than write an unbiased history.
