Grand Valley Journal of History
The article titled, Insurrectionary Heroines: The Possibilities and Limits of Women’s Radical Action During the French Revolution, gathers research materials from multiple primary and secondary sources to generate an analysis of women’s participation in the French Revolution. The focus of this analysis draws on how these women confronted the Early Modern European female status quo through the use of radical action during the Revolution, which ultimately led to the creation of new possibilities for women's participation in society and revealed the limitations of this new found participation. Radical action is defined by four major events in the article: the female …

The Auld Alliance between Scotland and France begun in 1295 with the treaty of Paris and continued until the Treaty of Union between Scotland and England in 1707. Successive French and Scottish monarchs kept the alliance in place with formal treaties and marriage alliances. These strong family connections among the ruling classes influenced all ranks in society. Scotland’s military support of France in wars between France and England resulted in many Scottish lords being granted lands and titles as a reward for their service to the French crown. The ties between the two countries developed as increasing numbers of followers …

"Your Majesty's Friend": Foreign Alliances In The Reign Of Henri Christophe, Jennifer Yvonne Conerly
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In modern historiography, Henri Christophe, king of northern Haiti from 1816-1820, is generally given a negative persona due to his controlling nature and his absolutist regime, but in his correspondence, he engages in diplomatic collaborations with two British abolitionists, William Wilberforce and Thomas Clarkson, in order to improve his new policies and obtain international recognition. This paper argues that the Haitian king and the abolitionists engaged in a mutual collaboration in which each party benefitted from the correspondence. Christophe used the advice of the British abolitionists in order to increase the power of Haiti into a powerful black state, and …

The title of this paper paraphrases a quote by Patrick Pearse, an Irish poet, writer, nationalist and political activist who was killed by the British for his participation in the Easter 1916 uprising. These words seem fitting for a discussion on the connection between politics and the Irish language in 19th and early 20thcentury Ireland, which this paper addresses.
The Irish language and Ireland’s creation as a nation are intricately linked. After the Great Famine of the 19th century, the rise of cultural nationalism within Ireland, fueled by its writers, convinced the Irish that they existed …

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
A Plagued Mind: The Justification of Violence within the Principles of Maximilien Robespierre, takes a new look into the political career of the French Revolutionary Maximilien Robespierre. This work explores the reasons as to why a man who valued principles so highly would seemingly turn against them by instituting the Reign of Terror. It follows the course of Robespierre's political career from beginning to end, and explains how each action taken by Robespierre was actually not an attempt to rise to power, but rather a sincere effort to create a republican France. As the French Revolution spiraled into chaos, …

Terror Unrealized: German Blunders, American Occupation Strategy, And The Failure Of The Nazi Werwolf Movement, Nicholas Jon Hurley
Honors Scholar Theses
The Nazi Werwolf movement is an often overlooked and forgotten subject during historical examinations of the end of the Second World War, due in large part to the fact that it never fully developed or reached the scale envisioned by its creators. Originally devised to conduct commando-style partisan operations behind Allied lines, the organization's failure can be attributed to a number of factors, both German and American. This work examines the logistical and organizational problems that crippled the movement prior to the end of hostilities in Europe, as well as the American postwar counterinsurgency campaign that wiped out what surviving …

Following the German invasion of Denmark in 1940, the Danish people presented a unified political and social resistance movement in order to defend those persecuted by the Nazi regime. Although occupied by Germany, Denmark became exempt from many of the extreme policies practiced in most other Nazi-controlled countries. A closer examination of these circumstances reveals how this exemption status, as well as support from the Danish Church, and king allowed for the accomplishment of something seemingly impossible; leading ninety five percent of the Danish Jewish population to safety.

During the volatile period, 1789 to 1795, many of the concepts that made up the backbone of the French Identity were challenged. While thousands of ew-aged French subjects protested, groups of impassioned revolutionaries met the call for change. Although these groups shared the common goal ofliberty for the French people, they differed greatly in their visions for the hazy future of France. By the end of 1792, two competing schools of thought would emerge as the primary political parties of the new state: a sect of zealous radicals, known as the Jacobins, and a sect of moderate radicals, known as …

This Internal Assessment investigates how propaganda in the media influenced Nazi Germany's development as a single party state. It reviews Adolf Hitler's background and role in the development of a propaganda ministry as well as Joseg Goebbels, the man who created the propaganda itself. Single party states use propaganda to increase and spread the popularity of the party. There is also a focus on propaganda techniques, such as bright colors to draw a viewer in, and the different propaganda outlets a citizen would have been exposed to. In this investigation, propaganda was found to have positively affected Germany's rise as …

The Rise And Fall Of Yugoslavia, Olivia Hinerfeld

In the last century, one nation achieved an incredible rise to power and devastating collapse in the span of mere decades. Yugoslavia-a now nonexistent country-flourished under the influential leadership of Josip Broz Tito. Elected President in 1953, Tito went on to rule over Yugoslavia until his death in 1980. How was Tito able to unite a region consisting of six national republics and two autonomous regions into one communist entity? The answer lies in Tito's policy of "polycentrism"; however, upon his death, the policy collapsed due to the ineffective leadership of the collective presidency, economic troubles, and ethno-religious unrest, resulting …

"Queen Of All Islands": The Imagined Cartography Of Matthew Paris's Britain, John Wyatt Greenlee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the middle decade of the thirteenth century, the Benedictine monk and historian Matthew Paris drew four regional maps of Britain. The monk's works stand as the earliest extant maps of the island and mark a distinct shift from the cartographic traditions of medieval Europe. Historians have long considered the version attached to the monk's Abbreviatio Chronicorum – the Claudius map – as the last and most thorough of Paris's images of Britain. However, scholars have focused on the document's limitations as an accurate geographic representation and have failed to consider critically Paris's representation of Britain with an eye towards …

This thesis seeks to dispel the notion that Nazi ideology was merely an afterthought to numerous actions taken by the Nazis. The first chapter discusses how Nazism’s earliest adherents internalized notions from World War I into an ideology that would motivate the early Nazi Movement to launch the Beer Hall Putsch. The second chapter focuses on the Nazi Party’s electoral tactics and how those actions correlated with entrenched Nazi ideological notions of recognition and community. Finally, the third chapter will seek to demonstrate that the numerous repressive measures implemented by the Third Reich were part of a general plan to …

Pietro Bembo’S Bias: Patronage, History, And The Italic Wars, Zachary M. Lizee

During the Italic Wars, the Italian peninsula experienced foreign invasions and internal discord between rivaling duchies and city-states. Florence and Venice both faced internal and external discord due to the constant wars and political in fighting. Venetian Pietro Bembo wrote historical accounts of this period during the Renaissance. His contemporaries, Marino Sanudo, Niccolo Machiavelli, and Francesco Guicciardini, also wrote historical accounts of this time. My research spotlights Bembo’s history of the Venetian Republic. This history was written in a supposedly objective fashion, yet, scholarship shows that historical writing from this time contained bias. I focused on Bembo because there is …

My dissertation explores the experiences of a group of separatist nationalist from the Dano-German borderland with special emphasis on the 1848 uprisings in Schleswig-Holstein, the secession crisis in the United States, and the unification of Germany. Guiding this transnational narrative are three prominent members of the Schleswig-Holstein uprising: the radical nationalists Theodor Olshausen and Hans Reimer Claussen and the liberal nationalist Rudolph Schleiden. Their perceptions, actions, and writings in the years leading up to 1848 and during the first Schleswig-Holstein war (1848-1851) advance the understanding of separatist nationalism during this period in general and the Schleswig-Holstein uprising in particular. Following …

This project looks at the Fifth Monarchy Men, a radical religious and political group in early modern England. Two quotes from the historian Bernard Capp formed the foundation for this project. The quotes both stated that the Fifth Monarchy Men’s millenarian ideology changed based on the hopes and fears of the common people. Two components made up my analysis of the topic. The first was to find out what were the hopes and fears of the common people. The case studies used for this piece involved Nehemiah Wallington and the townspeople of Dorchester. Even though they were the hotter sort …

Conservative Revolutionary Intellectuals In The Weimar Republic And National Socialist Germany: Carl Schmitt, Martin Heidegger, And Ernst Jϋnger, Vincent S. Betts
History Theses
This thesis will examine the writings and career/life paths of three conservative revolutionary intellectuals during the Weimar Republic and National Socialist Germany. The purpose of this examination is not only to provide an overview of the development of conservative revolutionary thought in Germany after World War I, but also to investigate the influence these intellectuals had on the National Socialists' seizure and consolidation of power. The works and lives of three important intellectuals will be examined: Carl Schmitt, Martin Heidegger, and Ernst Jünger. In combination with scholarly secondary literature, this thesis will be based mostly on translated primary writings.
