In the face of Chinese exclusion and Victorian-era morality, this project presents a family photo album as a counter-narrative to racialized and gendered immigration policies. The photo album is from the Chong family who were part of a Chinese American community living in San Francisco around 1915. The paper follows the fluctuating and non-chronological layout of the album and the uncertainties within to analyze Chinese Americans family formations in the context of state control of Asian migrants, including hyper-policing and surveillance around immigration status, queerness, and class. The Chong family album demonstrates how Chinese Americans employed flexible definitions of family …

The Romans practiced many religions in their quest to obtain Pax Deorum throughout the centuries. The Britons came into contact with the Romans and were exposed to many new ideas and concepts. Both groups found a way to coexist, which can be seen most obviously in the religion of the Southwest region of Britain. Gods from both cultures fused together or took on another new form to emerge in this new hybridized Romano-British culture. Chandra Lynn, also known as Chandra T. Mountain, is Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and Professor of English at Oakwood University. Though much of the writing she does these days is “scholarly and serious,” she has been writing almost her entire life. The proof is in the trove of notebooks and millions (slight exaggeration) of poems and drafts her husband “discovered” a few years ago. The poem above was written when she was 18; it is part of a collection she is curating entitled, Musings from My Younger Self.

Before 1978 it was legal for the United States federal government to remove Native American children from their homes and send those children to Indian boarding schools, some located in South Dakota. This was the case until the passage of S. 1214, the Indian Child Welfare Act which outlawed the removal of children based on race, “Declares that it is the policy of Congress to establish minimum Federal standards for the removal of Indian children from their families (extended families) and for the placement of such children in foster or adoptive homes which will reflect Indian culture.” This was 86 …

Creating Cowboys And “Playing Indian”: Football And White Supremacy From 1890-1980, Lily B. Denehy

History Honors Projects

This honors thesis argues that football is a location of leisure which reinforces and (re)creates a comforting white male supremacist American empire through its use of imaginary frontiers, distortion of Native imagery and culture, and its development of mythic cowboy-heroes— which serve as escapes from ubiquitous national anxieties. I use textual and visual analysis of primary sources from the 1890s, 1920s, and 1970s to describe how football developed as a comforting space of leisure for white people in the face of national crises of masculinity, rights movements, and disillusionment with America’s empire.

This collection is comprised of postcards that are connected to the Nazi Party in Germany. The Nazi Party, officially the National Socialist German Workers' Party (German: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei or NSDAP), was a political party in Germany active between 1920 and 1945 that created and supported the ideology of Nazism. Its precursor, the German Workers' Party (Deutsche Arbeiterpartei; DAP), existed from 1919 to 1920. The Nazi Party emerged from the extremist German nationalist, racist and populist Freikorps paramilitary culture, which fought against the communist uprisings in post–World War I Germany. Fashion has been a catalyst for social change throughout human history. Fashion in 1920s America in particular reflects society's rapidly evolving attitudes towards gender and race. Beginning with how corsetry heavily restricted women for nearly four hundred years up until the twentieth century, this thesis explores how clothing has acted as a tool for societal progression following World War I and Women's Suffrage and during the Jazz Age and The Harlem Renaissance. Specifically, this thesis examines how the influence of jazz music and dance that originated from Black American communities led to the creation of the flapper evening dress. The …

This study aims to examine the significant factors affecting residents 'support for tourism during one of Thailand's most celebrated festivals - the candle festival, and develop practical guidelines to support its sustainability. Data was collected from residents of the local community where the candle festival is held. Guided by the Social Exchange Theory, the measurements used in this current study were adapted from the past literature concerning the theory. This research focuses on the Nasep performance of the Zainub band in Bangkok, regards its background, band administration and knowledge transmission including Islamic views on music performance. Results have shown that Nasep, which originated from Nasheed and Li-ke Riab is the performing art of Muslims in central Thailand. The Zainub band, where most members are women is a gathering of award winning Qaris1 and its main presentation is Arab-Malay songs. Musical knowledge has been transmitted by rote and is self-taught. The contestation of urban space is a dialectical process in defining space by stakeholders in urban areas. We will explain the efforts of city citizens to form a collective space by promoting a making culture. With the spirit of Do It Yourself and Do It With Others, the collective space produces shared knowledge and democratizes data to increase the capacity of urban citizens. This study is grounded on empirical research in Yogyakarta through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and participant observation. We discuss the formation of collective space in urban informality to encourage urban communities. This study finds that the …

This research article discusses selected piano works by Thai and Japanese composers who studied with Klaus Pringsheim (1883-1972) at the Tokyo University of the Arts in Japan around 1931-37. Pringsheim established the conventional Romantic musical language among his students. A few students, including Prasidh Silapabanleng and Komei Abe, also furthered the idea of integrating vernacular musical language in their compositions. Silapabanleng incorporated Thai traditional melodies in many compositions. Abe also interlaced a koto playing technique in his Piano Sonatina No.3 in C minor which required specific musical knowledge and interpretation in order to convey the performance perfectly. We call for psychologists to expand their thinking on fair and just public safety by engaging with the “Abolition Democracy” framework that Du Bois (1935) articulated as the need to dissolve slavery while simultaneously taking affirmative steps to rid its toxic consequences from the body politic. Because the legacies of slavery continue to produce disparities in public safety in the U.S, both harming Black people and the institutions that could keep them safe, psychologists must take seriously questions of history and structure in addition to immediate situations. This thesis argues that patisserie and the French relationship with dessert are a part of national identity. The historical context of patisserie runs parallel to the growth and power of the French colonial empire. Patisserie feels removed from the empire, and yet the two show how gastronomy, luxury, and exploitative power in the form of empire are components of French history and identity. Marx’s theory on commodity fetishism serves as the backbone for this argument. This theoretical idea supposes that value is an objective concept and society attributes importance and perceived meaning. Patisserie exemplifies commodity fetishism as a good with …
