Heroes Of Berlin Wall Struggle, William D. Bowman

When the Berlin Wall fell 25 years ago, on Nov. 9, 1989, symbolically signaling the end of the Cold War, it was no surprise that many credited President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev for bringing it down.

But the true heroes behind the fall of the Berlin Wall are those Eastern Europeans whose protests and political pressure started chipping away at the wall years before. East German citizens from a variety of political backgrounds and occupations risked their freedom in protests against communist policies and one-party rule in what they called the "peaceful revolution." With the completion of this report the University of Denver is presented with an opportunity to reflect on our institutional origins, history, and legacy. We have an opportunity to provide a model of transparency, accountability, and transformation for institutions that have directly profited or indirectly benefited from the displacement of the indigenous communities whose lands and histories they occupy. "Universities are dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of knowledge. They are conservators of humanity's past. They cherish their own pasts, honoring forbears with statues and portraits and in the names of buildings. To study or teach at a [university] is to be a member of a community that exists across time, a participant in a procession that began centuries ago and that will continue long after we are gone. If an institution professing these principles cannot squarely face its own history, it is hard to imagine how any other institution, let alone our nation, might do so."

In 2010 Ralph Kingston highlighted how history’s ‘rediscovery of space and place’was firmly on the agenda for the twenty-first century. 1 Four years on this article asks whether Kingston’s claim is still valid or whether historians’ passion for all things spatial has run its course. This article reviews five recent collections of essays connected by themes of urban space and place, and asks how far the exploration of space as a way of understanding the past is still proving an embryonic and constructive way of approaching the past.

The story I am about to tell is entirely true. Several weeks ago, as I departed Musselman Library after a long night of intensive research, a sudden presence roused me from my intellectual exhaustion. Tom Rivera interviews couple Mary Van Aken Garcia and Gilbert Garcia, the former who knew Rivera for many years. At the start of the interview, the couple discusses how they first met, which was actually at another person’s wedding. The topic then moves from the couple’s relationship to school, their respective families, and the neighbors they had long ago. Garcia then speaks about his own time playing for the Mercury’s and softball. Garcia then speaks about getting into flying and eventually flying jets for the National Guard and Air Force.
