The article explores William Albright's Whistler (1834-1903): Three Nocturnes (1989) through historical context, musical analysis, performance practice, and the composer's essay on the relationship between his composition and Whistler's paintings. Commentary by composer Sydney Hodkinson gives information about the 1960s new music scene in Ann Arbor (the ONCE Group, The Grate Society) composition study with Ross Lee Finney.

Gender, a social construct, exists on a spectrum that is shaped by social, cultural, and embodied experience. Edges That Touch examines the instability of gender through the lens of combat sports, focusing on the way the hypermasculine environment abstracts femme identities. Informed by my lived experience, the work investigates the paradox in which empowerment and alienation coexist and destabilizes gender binaries.

These sister poems "more than any thing" and "more than any one" were written as an exploration of how we tend to romanticize people we are involved with romantically. After they break our hearts or hurt us in some way, we begin to see them as they truly are, for better or worse. "more than any thing" is the process of viewing someone through rose colored glasses, while "more than any one" is looking back on the relationship and wishing you had spent more time learning to love yourself.

From Flat To Form- Mid Armhole & Waist Dart, Ivanna M. Graves Ms

SPARK Symposium Presentations

The purpose of this garment project is to distribute part of the waist dart intake of a basic front bodice block to create the armhole dart. This is achieved using the slashing technique, where the waist dart is cut to the bust point and part of the intake is transferred to the armhole. The vintage-style collar complements the bodice, while the pleats add structure and visual interest to the skirt.

This dress design features a halter neckline with both side and neckline darts, creating a structured and well-fitted bodice. The pattern is developed using the Slashing technique, in which the waist dart of the basic bodice is transferred to the side and neckline by closing the original dart. The skirt is further enhanced with safety pins placed along the sides as a design embellishment. This combination of technical construction and bold detailing creates a cohesive garment that balances structure with an edgy aesthetic.

For the Knowledge and Creativity Expo, I am proposing the installation of an official Virginia LOVEworks sign on the Old Dominion University campus, supervised by faculty member John Roth. This project is part of my own undergraduate research for becoming a public artist.
