This introductory drawing course offers an immersive, practice-based exploration of observational drawing from life. Emphasizing perceptual skills, students will engage with key visual principles—such as proportion, space, perspective, and composition—through projects focused on still life, the human figure, and portraiture. Working with graphite, charcoal, and ink, students will develop both technical fluency and expressive range, learning to convey presence, mood, and memory through mark and form. The course blends rigorous studio practice with critical looking and discussion, encouraging students to cultivate their own artistic voice through sustained attention, experimentation, and care.

Inhabit is an archive of interrelated projects concerning diasporas, histories and place. Yamamoto was born and raised in Honolulu, but has lived and worked in Western Massachusetts for the last several years. The trajectory of projects engages the historical rapports and tensions between Hawai’i and New England, beginning in the 19th century, as well as the thread of (Japanese) diaspora that weaves through it. Essays by Lawrence Chua, Jaimey Hamilton Faris, Lucretia Knapp, Susan Kunimatsu, Margo Machida and Kerri Sakamoto.
