There was an increased incidence of pediatric patients who presented with injuries caused by falls not related to sports or other recreational activities, as well as for animal bites, during the early pandemic period of April 2020. Education of parents and caregivers of young children is warranted to raise awareness of the even greater potential for falls and animal bites when children are confined at home for longer than typical periods of time, as occurred with the stay-at-home government orders during the initial period of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nursing Faculty Publications

Background and objective: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common problem in pediatric urgent care medicine. There are multiple quality improvement (QI) projects related to the management of UTIs documented in the pediatric literature. We developed a project to decrease the prescribing of ultimately unneeded antibiotics for possible UTIs in a pediatric urgent care setting. A similar project has not been described in the pediatric literature.

Methods: We first reviewed the charts of patients presenting to a system of pediatric urgent care centers with a possible UTI over a 2-year period. We then launched a QI project with three plan, …

Purpose/Background

Ventilator-acquired pneumonia (VAP) is a preventable hospital-acquired infection with a high mortality rate. Ventilator care bundles (VCB) are implemented to decrease the risk of infection while patients are mechanically ventilated. The aim of this scoping review was to assess how adult patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) requiring mechanical ventilation and the incidence of VAP are affected by staff’s compliance to a VCB.

Methods

From August of 2022 to November 2022, literature research was done among databases such as PubMed, MEDLINE, and CINAHL. The systematic search in PubMed yielded 55 results with the headings of “(ventilator) AND (care …

Enhancing Health Data Representation For Older Adults: Unlocking Opportunities, Peterson Jean 2023 Technological University Dublin

Enhancing Health Data Representation For Older Adults: Unlocking Opportunities, Peterson Jean

Academic Posters Collection

The prevalence of off-the-shelf wearable devices increases the monitoring and measurement of critical physiological parameters like activity, sleep, heart rate, and blood pressure. However, the accessibility of health data representations poses challenges for older adults, who often struggle to understand the criticality of their own health data without assistance. This poster highlights the challenges older adults face in accessing their health data from wearable technologies, specifically focusing on data representations.

To address these challenges, it proposes a methodology that involves a heuristic evaluation of existing data representations with experts and accessibility studies with older adults using a mixed methods approach …

An Explainable Deep Learning Prediction Model For Severity Of Alzheimer's Disease From Brain Images, Godwin O. Ekuma 2023 Missouri State University

An Explainable Deep Learning Prediction Model For Severity Of Alzheimer's Disease From Brain Images, Godwin O. Ekuma

MSU Graduate Theses

Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have become the go-to method for medical imaging classification on various imaging modalities for binary and multiclass problems. Deep CNNs extract spatial features from image data hierarchically, with deeper layers learning more relevant features for the classification application. The effectiveness of deep learning models are hampered by limited data sets, skewed class distributions, and the undesirable "black box" of neural networks, which decreases their understandability and usability in precision medicine applications. This thesis addresses the challenge of building an explainable deep learning model for a clinical application: predicting the severity of Alzheimer's disease (AD). AD …

Race/Ethnicity And Morbidity/Mortality In Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: 2016 Usa Study, Victorien Meray, Rupa Seetharamaiah

East Florida Research Day 2023

Background: Social determinants of health, such as race and ethnicity, can have a significant impact on people's health and well-being. People of color are more likely to experience poverty, lack of access to healthcare, and discrimination, which can lead to worse health outcomes. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the gallbladder. It is the most common gastrointestinal surgery performed in the United States. In this study, we sought to determine if there is an association between race/ethnicity and morbidity/mortality in adult patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Methods: We conducted a non-concurrent cohort study of patients over 18 years old …

Comparing The Expression Of Er, Pr, Her-2 Between Initial Biopsy And Excision Specimens In Invasive Breast Carcinoma Cases. Is There A Need For Universal Repeat Testing?, Gul Wymer, Astrid Sacasa, Susana Ferra

East Florida Research Day 2023

BACKGROUND: The current College of American Pathologist (CAP) recommendation is that breast biomarkers Estrogen (ER), Progesterone (PR) and HER2 neu (Her2) testing be done on all primary invasive breast carcinomas and on recurrent or metastatic tumors with the aim to identify patients that will benefit from hormonal treatment or anti-Her2 therapy. Repeat testing on a subsequent specimen is not usually indicated unless results appear discordant with the histopathologic findings. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the need of adopting universal reflex re-testing of breast biomarkers in subsequent excision specimens. The rationale behind this study was based upon …

East Florida Research Day 2023

Introduction: Vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty are common procedures used to treat vertebral compression fractures. The most common precipitating factor is osteoporosis, although there are other causes such as trauma, spinal tumors, etc. These procedures utilize fluoroscopy by inserting a trocar into the pathological vertebra. Once the trocar is in place, bone cement is then inserted into the vertebra in a vertebroplasty to help stabilize the fracture. In a kyphoplasty, a balloon is inserted after the trocar and is slowly inflated to correct the collapsed vertebra before injecting the cement. These procedures are commonly performed in an outpatient setting and generally yield good outcomes …

INTRODUCTION: An estimated 44 million individuals live with Alzheimer's Dementia globally, a number expected to triple by 2050.1 Depression is a commonly observed comorbidity in individuals with Alzheimer's disease. Traditional antidepressant medications often pose challenges due to their side effects and limited efficacy in this population. As a result, alternative therapeutic approaches are being explored, with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) emerging as a promising intervention for treating depression in Alzheimer's patients. TMS is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that utilizes magnetic fields to modulate neural activity in targeted brain regions …
