The Developing Effects Of Potassium Ferricyanide On Tetrahymena, Katelyn Coronell 2023 Whittier College

The Developing Effects Of Potassium Ferricyanide On Tetrahymena, Katelyn Coronell

Whittier Scholars Program

Potassium Cyanide is a highly toxic chemical asphyxiant that interferes with the body's ability to use oxygen, typically by directly affecting the body by ingestion, inhalation, skin contact, or eye contact(CDC, 2011). Due to its high toxicity, the main effect that leads to the downfall of the organism begins with the cessation of aerobic metabolism; it does this by cyanide binding to the ferric ions and inhibiting cytochrome oxidase within the mitochondria (Zhang, 2015). There are no physical dangers the substance causes. Although, there are many chemical dangers. If used at temperatures higher than 70℉ The substance may produce toxic …

Studies Of Forward Projection Algorithms And Implementation On Pc And Fpga, Minsung Cho 2023 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Studies Of Forward Projection Algorithms And Implementation On Pc And Fpga, Minsung Cho

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This thesis first aims to understand how a part of the computed tomography (CT) algorithm called “forward projector” (FP) works and how it can be accelerated at a hardware level. Two methods of FP are defined and studied: pixel-driven and ray-driven. Both methods fundamentally use the property of line integral and Bresenham’s algorithm. As the result of the study of the two FP methods, the ray-driven algorithm implemented in C++ performed 35% faster than the pixe-driven algorithm implemented in Python. This thesis implements the ray-driven forward projector algorithm using field-programmable gate array (FPGA), making use of hardware-acceleration techniques. The result shows …

Impact Of Personal, Familial, And Socioeconomic Factors On The Return Of Remotely Collected Samples For Genetic Testing, Jordan Zeiger 2023 The Texas Medical Center Library

Impact Of Personal, Familial, And Socioeconomic Factors On The Return Of Remotely Collected Samples For Genetic Testing, Jordan Zeiger

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

There are a multitude of barriers known to impact access to medical care in the United States. COVID-19 has changed and compounded these barriers and led to a shift in the setting of the genetic counseling (GC) appointment, and in sample types used for genetic testing, specifically with use of telemedicine and remotely collected saliva kits. Previous studies have described lack of patient follow-through in returning these kits. Though the understanding of barriers to medical care, including access to genetics services, is well described, there is little in the literature for how these barriers impact the return of remotely collected …

North Texas Research Forum 2023

Initiative to decrease unnecessary hemostatic agent transfusion in cirrhotic patients undergoing paracentesis: a resident-led approach quality improvement project to prevent transfusion overuse. Currently, there is no official guideline placed in the hospital for the administration of a hemostatic agent such as fresh frozen plasma in the setting of an elevated international normalized ratio, which paradoxically is an anticipated finding in cirrhotic patients. This process leads to unnecessarily prolonging the duration of the hospital course due to delays in performing the interventional procedures and interruptions in scheduling. The goal of this project is to educate and provide physicians with the most …

Purpose/Background

Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder that can significantly affect a patient’s psychological state. Because of this, medication nonadherence is reported as one of the most common causes of relapse and rehospitalization in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. Although long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics can help provide more continuous treatment, they do not address other factors that affect treatment adherence. This scoping review will evaluate existing literature to assess if a multimodal approach, such as increased patient follow-ups in addition to scheduled, current-practice LAI treatment and management, may increase treatment adherence in adult patients diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Methods

A database search …

Bioinformatic Analysis Of Mirna Mechanisms In Circadian Rhythm Using A Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) Model, Layton F. Coursey 2023 Georgia Southern University

Bioinformatic Analysis Of Mirna Mechanisms In Circadian Rhythm Using A Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) Model, Layton F. Coursey

Honors College Theses

MicroRNAs are noncoding RNAs found in cells and the bloodstream, which help to maintain proper protein production and overall gene expression1. Typically, microRNAs bind to messenger RNA (mRNA) in the cell cytoplasm, acting as post-transcriptional regulators, and either degrade or repress mRNA2. Due to microRNAs playing a vital role in gene expression by repressing protein production of target genes, if they are underexpressed then the protein it regulates could be overexpressed as a result.

miRNAs have the potential to be biomarkers for numerous neurodegenerative diseases. Neurodegeneration can be seen in many forms such as Dementia, Alzheimer’s (AD), Huntington’s Disease (HD), …
