A Script For Archiving Digital Research Data: Improving Accuracy And Efficiency In The Dataverse Network, Erin Crane, Rachel Carriere, Thu-Mai Christian, Cheryl Thompson

Faculty Publications and Presentations

My colleagues and I assessed the workflow for data ingest at the Odum Archive at the University of North Carolina. We then made recommendations based on our analysis of the system. This poster discusses the most important recommendation that we gave the staff of the archive. We suggested that they create a script which would automate the steps in the workflow that involve a single point of failure. With the script, the single point of failure remains, but the risk of error has been significantly lessened.

Advanced Meeting Facilitation Techniques, Carol A. Watson, Wendy Moore Jul 2011

Advanced Meeting Facilitation Techniques, Carol A. Watson, Wendy Moore

Presentations

As many librarians learned in last year's AALL presentation on facilitation, a well-facilitated meeting can transform a regular work session into an extraordinarily productive event. Participants learned that a well-crafted agenda, thoughtful ground rules, optimal meeting space, and detailed minutes can all set the stage for a successful meeting.

However, meetings can still go awry. A poorly facilitated meeting can make everyone dread meetings even if the meeting has been well-planned. Managing or facilitating behaviors is the final essential ingredient for success. Have you ever been in a meeting that is monopolized by one individual? Or someone offers a suggestion …

The creators of our constitution believed that all men are endowed with certain unalienable rights, one of which being the Pursuit of Happiness. We all measure happiness in our own lives differently, and many of us find happiness in what we do each day. President Theodore Roosevelt once said “Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” Everyone should have the privilege of serving a purpose within their society, however, people with …

Autism spectrum disorders are greatly misunderstood in today’s society. In the United States, it is estimated that 1 in 110 children are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. Despite this high prevalence, a great deal of the population is under the impression that a diagnosis of autism is straight forward and indicative of one set of devastating signs and symptoms. However, the severity of this disorder can range from mild to severe. According to the National Institute of Health, an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders characterized …

Maintaining and providing access to collections can be challenging. Doing this at a distance is more challenging. Doing this at a distance during a period of major transition and controlled chaos is a herculean task. In July 2010, the state-mandated merger of the College of Eastern Utah (a two-year community college) with Utah State University (200 miles distant) became official. Well before this date, staff at both libraries began to deal with the complex issues involved with maintaining stable access to the collections of the College of Eastern Utah libraries. The changing situation required implementing a wide spectrum of solutions. …
