Preservation Arrives At The Research Lab: Diving Into Data Management, David Lowe

After sharing a sense of the problem being solved and the rationale for preservation-related staff involvement, this talk includes a brief history of UConn's institutional experience with the new data management context. Next, the focus shifts to a to-do list of some discussions and considerations that need to be happening at virtually every institution that receives federal grant funding for research. Finally, a quick overview of some tools and other resources concludes the presentation.

Working With Vendors: The Uconn “Daily Campus” Student Newspaper Digital Reformatting Case Study, Michael J. Bennett

The presentation covers the University of Connecticut Libraries’ efforts to digitize the school’s campus newspaper, from the time of its inception in 1896 to 1990. Source materials for the project were preservation microfilm reels from the Libraries’ Thomas J. Dodd Research Center’s holdings, which were sent to a vendor for batch reformatting. Issues with regard to clearly articulating client needs and evaluating various vendor deliverable options are discussed.

An update on the findings of the 2008 JPEG 2000 survey conducted by the authors. A review of the current landscape of software tools that support the specification, tool usage, and a look at the recent literature that surrounds the format's possible employment in the cultural heritage community are also examined.

A demonstration of the installation and use of Google Analytics with CONTENTdm in order to better gather metrics and insight into both general and specific online traffic across such digital repositories. Issues addressed will include collection-level traffic, digital object-level traffic, general site referrals to the repository, specific referrals to the repository, search engine referrals, user keywords, traffic occurring inside and/or outside an institution’s own network, reporting options.
