Library Data Services (Lids) Dataset: A Golden Gate(Way) To Collaboration, Chad M. Kahl, Joshua Newport, Lindsey Skaggs

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Research data services (RDS) are growing rapidly in libraries. To better understand the current state of RDS across R1 and R2 institutions, how they've evolved since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and who is providing these services, this research project built an interoperable Library Data Services (LIDS) dataset to inform RDS development and assessment. The dataset records data service area(s) (e.g., Research Data Management), fifteen data service types (e.g., data management/data curation), and personnel and unit information gathered through website content analyses, alongside Carnegie Classification data. Unlike similar studies (Radecki and Springer, 2020; Yu, 2017; Yoon & Schultz, 2017; …

Milner Library staff, who work to provide affordable academic resources and support learning on campus through many collaborations, are in a unique position to assist in addressing this problem.

Representatives from Milner Library will discuss the ways in which textbook affordability became a problem and how it impacts different groups on ISU’s campus; steps the library is taking to increase access …

Speak Up Through Video: Campus Collaboration For Effective Flipped Learning, Susan Franzen, Julie Derden Oct 2019

Speak Up Through Video: Campus Collaboration For Effective Flipped Learning, Susan Franzen, Julie Derden

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Let’s face it, sometimes librarians repeat the same content over and over. Or we have to present information that students find uninteresting and difficult to understand. To make repetitive, challenging library information engaging and entertaining, two librarians collaborated with their campus television production team to create videos to flip library instruction for education and nursing majors. After sharing basic information with a team of creative production interns and their faculty advisor, both librarians were thrilled with the inventive, instructive videos produced. One video featured a game show of data and statistics for a public health nursing course. The second used …

The poster introduces the technology and process involved in creating the iTour, the connection to and inclusion of the tour with first-year courses, as well as overall engagement with the tour according to broad level statistics.

Promoting College Of Fine Arts Works Through The Institutional Repository, Anne Shelley Oct 2018

Promoting College Of Fine Arts Works Through The Institutional Repository, Anne Shelley

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

In summer 2017, I assumed responsibility for my library's institutional repository (IR). Content from the College of Fine Arts (Schools of Music, Art, and Theatre and Dance) had, to that point, been less present in the IR than content from other colleges. With goals of increasing visibility for CFA activities and scholarship and providing a stable digital home for its content, I worked with stakeholders in the library and in CFA to develop new IR collections of programs, newsletters, and student and faculty work. This presentation provides attendees with ideas about identifying performing arts content for an IR, stakeholder talking …

The Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) comprises 128 diverse member libraries, including 13 public universities, 39 community colleges, and 76 private, research, and special libraries. In 2016, member libraries began to ask CARLI staff about joining the Open Textbook Network (OTN), a membership organization anchored at the University of Minnesota that promotes access, affordability, and student success through the use of open textbooks. Part of the University of Illinois System, CARLI is funded by State of Illinois appropriations and at the time was unable to afford the OTN membership fee due to the historic 736-day “budget …

Responsible Remixing: Resources For Improving The Scholarly Conversation, Anne Shelley

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Students are sometimes asked to complete course assignments that are rich in media, such as videos, posters, or presentations. Sometimes they create their own original content by shooting and editing their own video scenes or photographs. More often, students will use existing digital assets--such images, video, and audio files--that were created by other people, and they repurpose those works to create their own new products. In order to create quality remixed media projects, students need to have some level of multimedia literacy. In this presentation I will talk about resources that can help guide students in finding, selecting, and evaluating …

Use Of The Worldcat Collection Analysis Tool To Assess The Statewide Serials Collection In Illinois, Chad E. Buckley

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

In an era of consistently poor funding for materials budgets, libraries must work to identify the most cost-effective solutions for providing access to information needed by patrons. Consortia play an important role in these solutions for many libraries and can help leverage their buying power to provide widespread access to various publishers’ content at more affordable costs. The CARLI consortium in Illinois formed a Statewide Serials Collection Task Force in 2006 to “investigate various collaborative options related to print and electronic serials collections across the state.” As part of this group's work, the Worldcat Collection Analysis tool, commonly employed for …
