Call Numbers, Oh Call Numbers On Ebooks, Why Have You Forsaken Us!, David Schuster, Sasha Frizzell

ILS vendor Knowledge bases (KB) are built in a black box. The quality of the metadata is not the concern of the ILS vendor which then leads to missing data, which impacts discoverability. Comparing records of two ILS vendors KBs has shown a disparity in how they manage metadata. We are evaluating multiple ebook publishers’ data in the KB based on the availability of call numbers and subject headings while looking at resource usage. Exploring ways to improve access by including call numbers and subject headings and discovering the larger problem.

This presentation at ENUG(ExLibris Users from the Northeast US) discussed several integrations that Binghamton University has accomplished in the 5 months since they went live. New Self Check system from Bintech replacing bibliotheca units. Integrating with the Banner system for Faculty, Student, and staff loads and exporting fines and fee information to Banner. Publishing to Google Scholar, OCLC and other systems to automate updating of content to these services. Also discussed was how to load content into Primo VE.

Program Level Assessment In The Library: Impact Of Information Literacy Instruction On English Composition And Speech Communications Courses At College Of Dupage, Jennifer Kelley

This presentation introduces an ongoing study evaluating how the College of DuPage Library’s Information Literacy Instruction Program contributes to students meeting institutional General Education Information Literacy outcomes. Via a cross-sectional exploratory survey, faculty teaching English Composition II and Fundamentals of Speech Communications will provide subjective understanding of information literacy and fact-reporting on use of information literacy services provided by the library. Results will impact the direction of the library’s information literacy instruction program and shape assessment of student learning.

Four years ago, Binghamton University Libraries was presented with an unique proposal. The School of Nursing was planning to take ownership of the OA journal,Online Journal of Rural Nursing and Health Care, and the new editor asked if the Libraries would assist with the editorial and managerial process. Erin Rushton, Web Services and Nursing Librarian, was named Managing Editor. She helps support the publishing system and prepares the pdfs for publication. She also ensures the journal is indexed and preserved in the Libraries’ preservation system. Literature on the subject shows that information literacy programs truly thrive when they receive support and involvement from teaching faculty. While efforts to integrate information literacy instruction into the curriculum and collaborating with faculty are not new, many of the opportunities and tools for doing so are.

Whether you have full-support from all faculty (lucky you!) or varying levels of involvement from isolated departments or instructors here and there, we all have access to the tools we need to spark interest, take conversations to the next level, engage individuals, and create collaborative environments for designing information literacy sessions and programs.
