Differential Motivation In Remote Educational Assessment: Person-Based Filtering Versus Response-Based Filtering, Sarah Alahmadi, Christine E. Demars Oct 2021

Differential Motivation In Remote Educational Assessment: Person-Based Filtering Versus Response-Based Filtering, Sarah Alahmadi, Christine E. Demars

Department of Graduate Psychology - Faculty Scholarship

Large-scale educational assessments are often considered low-stakes, increasing the possibility of confounding true performance level with low motivation. These concerns are amplified in remote testing conditions. To remove the effects of low effort levels in responses observed in remote low-stakes testing, several motivation filtering methods can be used to purify the data. We estimated scores from assessment data collected remotely in Spring 2021 six ways, applying examinee-based filtering methods (filtering examinees based on total time) and response-based filtering methods (filtering responses using the effort-moderated IRT model), varying the thresholds selected to separate solution behavior (SB) responses from rapid-guessing behavior (RGB). …

This session gives an introduction to creating digital exhibitions with limited resources. By reviewing some basic concepts behind planning a digital exhibition, and exploring key considerations when selecting technology and tools, participants will make progress towards outlining a plan of action for creating their own exhibition. We’ll look at a few free tools and resources including Omeka and timelineJS, while reflecting on how digital exhibitions can balance accessibility and innovation.

Critical Information Literacy: From General Education To The Major How Assessment Shapes Competencies And Student Learning, Kathy E. Clarke, Gretchen A. Hazard, Brian C. Leventhal Feb 2019

Critical Information Literacy: From General Education To The Major How Assessment Shapes Competencies And Student Learning, Kathy E. Clarke, Gretchen A. Hazard, Brian C. Leventhal

Libraries

Information literacy became formally shaped by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) in the late 1990s with the creation of the Information Literacy Standards for Higher Education. James Madison University adopted the Standards as learning outcomes into its general education program at that time. We continue to evolve our program to forge foundational skills for all entering students, and are in the process of moving towards the new ACRL Framework.

JMU is committed to an outcomes and assessment model of general education. For the information literacy learning domain, we’ve created a course-embedded, tutorial-test model. Thanks to the partnership …

Access To Humanities Scholarship Through Public Search Engines, Jody C. Fagan, Malia Willey Nov 2018

Access To Humanities Scholarship Through Public Search Engines, Jody C. Fagan, Malia Willey

Libraries

While research has shown search engine coverage of science and social science scholarship rivals traditional library databases, the coverage or utility of public search engines for the humanities needs further exploration. This presentation will report results from at least two empirical research studies that investigated access to humanities scholarship via public search engines (e.g. Google, Google Scholar, Google Books, Microsoft Academic). We will propose additional research ideas that we hope will inspire future studies.

Developing Communication Plans To Support Technology Changes, Jody C. Fagan, Malia Willey Nov 2018

Developing Communication Plans To Support Technology Changes, Jody C. Fagan, Malia Willey

Libraries

Technology change is difficult for everyone, even under the best circumstances. A collaboratively-developed communication plan can ease stress and foster buy-in. Come participate in a workshop where we will show-and-tell best practices and examples of successful communication plans, then offer structured activities where you will develop your own plan, either for an actual project or a sample scenario we will offer. You’ll get immediate peer feedback on your ideas, and will have the opportunity to ask facilitators and other participants questions about specific challenges.

Effective And Compelling Information Literacy For Schev Reporting: What Do Virginia Librarians Want This To Look Like?, Kathy E. Clarke, Candice Benjes-Small, Meridith A. Wolnick

Libraries

As this is new to us, questions arise. What will this reporting look like? How will it play out on our campuses? Who should our partners be? What will be useful to report and what might not? This session is designed to begin a conversation across institutions to encourage each other to be creative as we explore useful ways to tell the information literacy story at our campuses.

It is important for everyone responding to SCHEV to remember, the reporting requirement is simply that, a mandate. Assessment mandates, from all types of entities, should not be feared but embraced. It …

Do Students Value General Education, Kathy E. Clarke, Gretchen A. Hazard, Raymond "Skip" M. Hyser

Libraries

At James Madison University, students are required to participate in two University-wide assessment days (A-Day). The first A-Day occurs when students enter the university during their on-campus orientation experience in late August. The second A-Day takes place on the second Tuesday in February and is required of students with 70-90 credit hours. These two days afford us much opportunity to ask questions.

Our assessment team has been using A-Days to gather information from students regarding their understanding of general education requirements and their ability to successfully complete the general education coursework. Students enter the University with high expectations regarding their …

Weaving Connections: Utilizing A Library-Social Work Partnership To Build Information Literacy Skills, David Vess, Laura Trull Mar 2018

Weaving Connections: Utilizing A Library-Social Work Partnership To Build Information Literacy Skills, David Vess, Laura Trull

Libraries

While evidence continues to build that information literacy (IL) is taught across university and college curricula at all student levels (Junsbai, Lowe & Tagge, 2016), challenges connecting IL to those curricula in meaningful ways persist (Julien, Gross, & Latham, 2018; Klomsri & Tedre, 2016; Bombaro 2013). Blending IL into social work education beyond traditional one-shot library sessions also remains a challenge as evidenced by the dearth of literature demonstrating sound instruction and assessment practices of IL in social work programs (Bausman & Ward, 2016; Kayser, Bowers, Jiang, & Bussey 2013; Johnson, Whitfield, & Grohe, 2011; Ismail, 2009; Brustman & Bernnard …

Inciting Action: Assessment Reporting Strategies That Fuel Change And Improve Learning, Kathy E. Clarke, Gretchen A. Hazard

Libraries

All assessment practitioners know the penultimate goal is loop closing. But we also live with the reality that assessment is also beholden to the Gods of Accountability. As assessment professionals, we dutifully attend to the cycle of improving student learning, but at each step in the cycle we must continue to hone our skills. Results reporting may seem like the least sexy of all of the steps in our practice, but we argue that is singularly important and represents a high art of assessment craft. Results must be engaging, actionable, meet accountability mandates, and importantly read by those who can …

Embracing Evidence Based Collecting In The Health And Behavioral Sciences, Carolyn Schubert, Michael Mungin Jun 2017

Embracing Evidence Based Collecting In The Health And Behavioral Sciences, Carolyn Schubert, Michael Mungin

Libraries

Objective: Evidence based collection development requires combining multiple sources of information, such as usage data, subject librarian expertise, user values and preferences, and external evidence from librarianship research. Through triangulation, librarians can build a collection that is responsive, balanced, and relevant to address both established and emerging curricular trends. In the field of health and behavioral studies, growth in interprofessional education supports collaborative collecting practices. In 2014-2015, health and behavioral studies librarians at James Madison University (JMU) piloted a collapsed monographic selection project to facilitate better interdisciplinary collecting. This project discusses an evidence-based approach to evaluating and updating approval profiles …

Library Guides: An Aggregation Of User Research From 1998 To 2017, David Vess Jun 2017

Library Guides: An Aggregation Of User Research From 1998 To 2017, David Vess

Libraries

A truly comprehensive search tool for resources provided by libraries will continue to be a distant dream until daunting technical challenges are addressed. A Google-like search experience is desirable in some contexts, but a case can be made that hiding subject-specific article databases behind a comprehensive search tool is a disservice to researchers.

Librarians have a long history of addressing the complex landscape of the various resources they offer by crafting guides to library collections. These guides provide direct links to resources while educating inexperienced researchers about discipline-specific databases. Unfortunately, this solution creates more complexities in the research resource landscape. …

Engaging With Black Lives Matter And Supporting Our Communities, Yasmeen Shorish, Michael Mungin, Kristen S. Shuyler

Libraries

In October 2016, the Diversity Council of Libraries and Educational Technologies produced book displays in Carrier and Rose Libraries that focused on "Understanding Black Lives Matter." The council wanted to provide information on this social movement within the context of national history and racial identity. A list of books that covered topic areas of criminal justice, Jim Crow, racism, and the Black experience - among others - was generated, along with two informational placards. One placard placed the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement within historical and social context, while the other placard offered a preemptive response to the question "Why …
