ILS vendor Knowledge bases (KB) are built in a black box. The quality of the metadata is not the concern of the ILS vendor which then leads to missing data, which impacts discoverability. Comparing records of two ILS vendors KBs has shown a disparity in how they manage metadata. We are evaluating multiple ebook publishers’ data in the KB based on the availability of call numbers and subject headings while looking at resource usage. Exploring ways to improve access by including call numbers and subject headings and discovering the larger problem.

Though a long-neglected genre in academic libraries, acquisitions of textbooks are on the rise. But textbooks often do not receive adequate cataloging attention. How can catalogers improve their practices? Inspired by the Highlights for Children comic strip, this presentation discusses five “goofs” and five “gallant” practices when cataloging textbooks.

This presentation discusses the importance of using quality data in describing non_English Language material, as often errors negatively impact searching and public displays. By correcting the language codes, add 800 paired MARC fields, and correcting Diacritics the library can improve the quality of these records.

Clemson University and the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) have collaborated since 2010 to develop the Open Parks Network, an open repository of over 230,000 digital objects and metadata records chronicling the diverse cultural and natural history of our nation’s parks, historic sites, and other protected areas. Authority control provided by Digital Commons is basic. Other than author names, Digital Commons does not provide much in the way of authority control for other fields, such as faculty advisor/mentor names or department names. Standardizing name fields has several benefits, not least of which is the increased precision of reports that institutions can create to highlight the impact of faculty mentorship activities as well as the scholarship output of departmental entities on campus. Viewing History From The Sky: Geo-Rectification Of An Aerial Photography Collection, Kate F. Boyd

After years of looking for funding, in 2013 USC Libraries was awarded a grant from the Gaylord & Donnelly Foundation to scan and geo-rectify the South Carolina historical aerial photographs from 1930-1980s. This presentation, given at the Digital Library Federation Forum in 2016, documents the efforts to receive funding and the process of bring these photographs online for users. Thanks to Bill Sudduth of Government Information for his efforts in continuing this process.

In 2014, the President of the University of Montana (UM) signed a resolution agreement with the Department of Education Office for Civil Rights regarding the accessibility of electronic and information technology (EIT) at UM. Since that time, we have been learning about accessibility and accessible technologies and have investigated the accessibility of EIT-based services at the Mansfield Library. We will share what we have learned about EIT accessibility; key results from our assessment of CONTENTdm; and a new cataloging initiative that improves the discoverability of accessible materials in library collections.

The Open Parks Network serves the global parks community by providing the information, tools, and solutions to support the stewardship of the natural and cultural assets of protected areas. To date, over 350,000 items and 1.5 million pages of material has been digitized as part of this project. This presentation details the project's background and strategies used for digitization and metadata creation. Additionally, the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace Donor Card Collection project is detailed. Institutionally licensed eBooks have not quite lived up to users’ needs and libraries’ expectations. Patrons accustomed to the ease of accessing eBooks purchased via commercial sites such as Amazon and Google Play are sometimes thrown for a loop when they encounter eBooks via the library’s site and the myriad restrictions that seem designed to turn users away. Libraries struggle with managing the complexities of eBook licensing and access, and staying on top of the differences between vendor platforms. This poster will attempt to apply the techniques used in Queer Theory to explore library and information science’s use and misuse of library classification systems; and to examine how “queering” these philosophical categories can not only improve libraries, but also help change social constructs.

For millennia, philosophers, such as Plato and Aristotle, have used and expounded upon categories and systems of classification. Their purpose is to make research and the retrieval of information easier. Unfortunately, the rules used to categorize and catalog make information retrieval more challenging for some, due to social constructs such as heteronormality.
