The Effectiveness Of Educational Interventions In Reducing Negative Attitudes And Stigmatisation Toward Patients With Anorexia Nervosa, Amy Bannatyne, Peta Stapleton
The Effectiveness Of Educational Interventions In Reducing Negative Attitudes And Stigmatisation Toward Patients With Anorexia Nervosa, Amy Bannatyne, Peta Stapleton
Peta B. Stapleton
It is frequently reported that clinicians across a range of professional disciplines experience strong negative reactions toward patients with eating disorders, particularly anorexia nervosa (AN). As research consistently demonstrates fear of stigma is the most frequently cited reason explaining why individuals with mental illness do not seek treatment, the current study aimed to develop, evaluate and compare the effectiveness of two differing educational interventions, based on an etiological framing model, against a wait-list control. Participants were fourth-year medicine students randomly assigned to one of three conditions. A three-hour educational workshop was delivered to participants at the beginning of an eight-week …

The Relationship Between Coping Styles In Response To Unfair Treatment And Understanding Of Diabetes Self-Care, Michelle Dyke, Yendelela Cuffee, Jewell Halanych, Richard Mcmanus, Carol Curtin, Jeroan Allison
Richard H. McManus
Purpose This study examined the relationship between coping style and understanding of diabetes self-care among African American and white elders in a southern Medicare-managed care plan. Methods Participants were identified through a diabetes-related pharmacy claim or ICD-9 code and completed a computer-assisted telephone survey in 2006-2007. Understanding of diabetes self-care was assessed using the Diabetes Care Profile Understanding (DCP-U) scale. Coping styles were classified as active (talk about it/take action) or passive (keep it to yourself). Linear regression was used to estimate the associations between coping style with the DCP-U, adjusting for age, sex, education, and comorbidities. Based on the …

The Use Of Telemedicine To Train Perioperative Nurses In Rural Settings, Pennie Seibert, Tatiana Reddy, Tiffany Whitmore, Jennifer Valerio, Codieann Dehaas
The Use Of Telemedicine To Train Perioperative Nurses In Rural Settings, Pennie Seibert, Tatiana Reddy, Tiffany Whitmore, Jennifer Valerio, Codieann Dehaas
Pennie S. Seibert
The training available to perioperative nurses in rural areas is often inefficient and can be difficult to access. We designed a distance training programme using educational material from the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN). Over a six-year period, we compared the performance of 22 nurses undertaking the programme via telemedicine with that of 13 nurses undertaking it conventionally, in person. The telemedicine nurses were based at six rural hospitals and interacted with their preceptors via remotely controlled videoconferencing systems. There was no significant difference in the time taken to complete the programme: 118 days in the telemedicine group and …

Jennifer L. Priestley
Introduction and hypothesis: To prospectively evaluate the use of a particular polypropylene Y mesh for robotic sacrocolpopexy. Methods: This was a prospective study of 120 patients who underwent robotic sacrocolpopexy. We compared preoperative and 12-month postoperative objective and subjective assessments via the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification (POP-Q), the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory, Short Form 20 (PFDI-20); the Pelvic Floor Impact Questionnaire, Short Form 7 (PFIQ-7); and the Pelvic Organ Prolapse/Urinary Incontinence Sexual Questionnaire 12 (PISQ-12). Objective 'anatomical success' was defined as POP-Q stage 0 or 1 at all postoperative intervals. We further defined 'clinical cure' by simultaneously considering POP-Q points …

Jennifer L. Priestley
Introduction and hypothesis The purpose of this study is to determine whether a Pilates exercise program and a pelvic floor muscle-training (PFMT) program could provide similar improvements in pelvic muscle strength. Methods Sixty-two women with little or no pelvic floor dysfunction were randomized to Pilates or PFMT. Each group had 24 biweekly 1-h sessions with either a physical therapist or Pilates instructor. Strength was measured via perineometry (cmH2O). Two questionnaires-pelvic floor distress inventory (PFDI-20) and pelvic floor impact questionnaire (PFIQ-7)-were also collected. Results At baseline, the Pilates and PFMT groups measured 14.9±12.5 and 12.5±10.4 cmH2O, respectively (p=0.41). Both the Pilates …

Diarylheptanoid From Pleuranthodium Racemigerum With In Vitro Prostaglandin E2 Inhibitory And Cytotoxic Activity, Hans Wohlmuth, Myrna Deseo, Don Brushett, Dion Thompson, Graham Macfarlane, Lesley Stevenson, David Leach
Dr Myrna A Deseo
Bioactivity-guided fractionation of an ethanolic extract of the rhizome of Pleuranthodium racemigerum, a tropical Zingiberaceae species from North-eastern Australia, resulted in the isolation and structural elucidation of 1-(4″-methoxyphenyl)-7-(4′-hydroxyphenyl)-(E)-hept-2-ene (1), a new diarylheptanoid related to curcumin. Compound 1 was a fairly potent inhibitor of prostaglandin E2 production in 3T3 murine fibroblasts (IC50 ≈ 34 μM) and also displayed moderate cytotoxicity against this cell line (IC50 = 52.8 μM). The compound also demonstrated cytotoxic activity against the P388D1 murine lymphoblast cell line (IC50 = 117.0 μM) and four human cell lines: Caco-2 colonic adenocarcinoma (IC50 = 44.8 μM), PC3 prostate adenocarcinoma (IC50 …

A 46-year-old male was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and severe left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction. Genetic testing revealed that this was a "mimic of HCM" and the true diagnosis was Fabry's disease, although there were no other clinical features of Fabry's. Despite maximal medical therapy he remained symptomatic from the outflow tract gradient and required surgical myectomy for symptom relief. This case illustrates the diagnosis of an HCM mimic by genetic testing.

Evidence-based practice requires that clinicians interpret the best research evidence in the context of their clinical experience, while at the same time considering client knowledge and experiences. Although clinicians are becoming increasingly skilled at the evaluation of research evidence, the evidence-based practice process often neglects client values and self-identified health issues. Ignoring these key aspects of client-centered practice may lead to interventions that fail to target the implications of a client’s disease that are important to occupational participation and quality of life (QOL). A focus on client-centeredness is particularly important in progressive neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, where there …

Prolactin And Fmri Response To Skf38393 In The Baboon, Brad D. Miller, Lauren A. Marks, Jonathan M. Koller, Blake J. Newman, G Larry Bretthorst, Kevin J. Black
Kevin J. Black, MD
Background: This study’s goal was to provide dose-response data for a dopamine agonist in the baboon using standard methods (replicate measurements at each dose, across a range of doses), as a standard against which to subsequently validate a novel pharmacological MRI (phMRI) method. Dependent variables were functional MRI (fMRI) data from brain regions selected a priori, and systemic prolactin release. Necessary first steps included estimating the magnitude and time course of prolactin response to anesthesia alone and to various doses of agonist. These first steps (“time course studies”) were performed with three agonists, and the results were used to select …

There is some debate regarding the differing levels of plasma homocysteine, vitamin B12 and serum folate between healthy controls (HC), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and Alzheimer's disease (AD). As part of the Australian Imaging Biomarker Lifestyle (AIBL) study of aging cohort, consisting of 1,112 participants (768 HC, 133 MCI patients, and 211 AD patients), plasma homocysteine, vitamin B12, and serum and red cell folate were measured at baseline to investigate their levels, their inter-associations, and their relationships with cognition. The results of this cross-sectional study showed that homocysteine levels were increased in female AD patients compared to female HC subjects …
