The Use Of Telemedicine To Train Perioperative Nurses In Rural Settings, Pennie Seibert, Tatiana Reddy, Tiffany Whitmore, Jennifer Valerio, Codieann Dehaas

The training available to perioperative nurses in rural areas is often inefficient and can be difficult to access. We designed a distance training programme using educational material from the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN). Over a six-year period, we compared the performance of 22 nurses undertaking the programme via telemedicine with that of 13 nurses undertaking it conventionally, in person. The telemedicine nurses were based at six rural hospitals and interacted with their preceptors via remotely controlled videoconferencing systems. There was no significant difference in the time taken to complete the programme: 118 days in the telemedicine group and …

National League For Nursing, Advancing Care Excellence For Veterans: Unfolding Cases, Janet Willhaus
Janet Willhaus
An unfolding case is one that evolves over time in a manner that is unpredictable to the learner. New situations develop and are revealed with each encounter. The NLN's Advancing Care Excellence for Veterans cases use the highly regarded unfolding case model developed for the Advancing Care Excellence for Seniors (ACES) model.

An Updated Review Of Published Simulation Evaluation Instruments, Katie Adamson, Suzan Kardong-Edgren, Janet Willhaus
Janet Willhaus
Interest in simulation as a teaching and evaluation strategy in nursing education continues to grow. Mirroring this growth, we have seen a proliferation of instruments designed to evaluate simulation participant performance. This article describes two frameworks for categorizing simulation evaluation strategies and provides a review of recent simulation evaluation instruments. The review focuses on four instruments that have been used extensively in the literature, objective structured clinical examinations (OSCE's) including four OSCE instruments, and an extensive list of new instruments for simulation evaluation.

Drawing on Connell’s (Gender and power: Society, the person and sexual politics. California: Stanford University Press, 1987; Masculinities. Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 1995) model of gender relations, this paper examines patterns of intimate partner violence among women who have recently left an abusive partner. In so doing, we attempt to better understand the social structural factors that shape the relations of power and control in intimate violent heterosexual unions. The data come from the first wave of a longitudinal prospective survey of 309 women who had left an abusive partner in the previous 3 years. Our data suggest …

Modeling The Effects Of Intimate Partner Violence And Access To Resources On Women’S Health In The Early Years After Leaving An Abusive Partner, Marilyn Ford-Gilboe, Judith Wuest, Colleen Varcoe, Lorraine Davies, Marilyn Merritt-Gray, Jacquelyn Campbell, Piotr Wilk
Lorraine Davies
Although the negative health effects of intimate partner violence (IPV) are well documented, little is known about the mechanisms or determinants of health outcomes for women who had left their abusive partners. Using data collected from a community sample of 309 Canadian women who left an abusive partner, we examined whether women's personal, social and economic resources mediate the relationships between the severity of past IPV and current health using structural equation modelling. A good fit was found between the model and data for hypothesized models of mental and physical health. In the mental health model, both the direct and …

Older Adults’ Perception Of Pictograph-Based Discharge Instructions After Hip-Replacement Surgery., Jeungok Choi
Older Adults’ Perception Of Pictograph-Based Discharge Instructions After Hip-Replacement Surgery., Jeungok Choi
Jeungok Choi
Current text-based discharge instructions are unsuitable for low-literate older adults who have difficulty following written action-based instructions. To address this issue, we developed discharge instructions for low-literate older adults after hip replacement surgery using pictographs (i.e., simple line drawings with stick figures showing explicit care actions). The aim of this focus group study was to examine the acceptability and comprehension of these instructions to 15 low-literate older adults. Participants perceived that the pictograph-based discharge instructions helped them understand the intended health care messages, especially for step-by-step procedures of discharge actions. The black-and-white line drawings were well received by all participants …

A registered nurse should exercise sound, compassionate clinical judgment; demonstrate deep and broad knowledge of health and illness; and be a technically skilled health care provider, who works effectively with patients and families in a complex medical, ethical, legal, and professional landscape. The nursing profession has periodically reflected on the nature of nursing education and has proposed new directions in the teaching of nursing. The Goldmark Report (1923), funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, paved the way for college- and university-based nursing programs; prompted by the success for the World War II cadet nurse program, the Montag Report (1951) initiated the …
