Bacteria resistance to antibiotics has become a worldwide problem impacted partly by antibiotics use in livestock production. The present study investigated the pattern and mechanisms of resistance in 21 bacteria species isolated from a river used as a waste-dump by a poultry farm in Ogbomoso, southwestern Nigeria. Bacteria were isolated on nutrient agar supplemented with 50 µg/mL of tetracycline, their identities were determined by PCR amplification, and sequencing of their 16s rRNA genes and their susceptibility to 6 antimicrobials determined by broth dilution. Discarded dried button, dried oyster, and fresh button mushroom beds were examined for their bioactive compounds and industrial enzymes. Levels of reducing sugars and total sugars were high in all mushroom beds. Carboxymethyl cellulase activity was higher (920 µg/mL) in the dried oyster mushroom bed extract. Schizophyllum commune, Fomitopsis feei, Trametes gibbosa, and Trametes elegans were grown on direct mushroom bed extract, 0.2% glucose-containing mushroom bed extract, and common production medium for determination of growth and lignolytic activities. In multicellular animals, organ size, cell size and total organism size are regulated by signaling through the insulin receptor and TOR signaling pathways. The ribosomal protein S6 kinase is a key component of these pathways. It has been shown that mice or Drosophila lacking this kinase have a reduced body size that is associated with a decrease in cell size. Genotoxic and mutagenic effects of aqueous extract from aerial parts of Achillea teretifolia (At-ext) were investigated using both Allium cepa root meristematic cells and a short-term mutation assay in Salmonella typhimurium with TA98 and TA100 strains in the presence or absence of S9 mix, respectively. In the Allium tests, EC_{50} value was determined as 50 g/L, and 0.5 × EC_{50}, EC_{50}, and 2 × EC_{50} concentrations of At-ext were applied to onion tuber roots. Phoenix dactylifera L. was introduced in Tunisia a very long time ago and plays an important socioeconomic role, especially in the south of the country. Genetic diversity and relationships among 26 cultivars were assessed with 7 ISSR primers. A total of 43 amplified bands were obtained. Principal component analyses based on Nei genetic distances showed no geographical separation with the exception of the Dhahbi cultivar, which has a limited geographical distribution. One of the natural reservoirs of potentially human-pathogenic bacteria is believed to be the rhizosphere. The aim of the present work was to test nontuberculous mycobacterium Mycobacterium phlei MbP18 for its ability to colonize the rhizosphere of wheat and to evaluate its effect on plant growth under saline conditions. In competitive wheat root tip colonization assays, M. phlei MbP18 showed poor competitive colonization of the wheat rhizosphere compared to the reference strain. Oxidative stress responses were evaluated in the digestive gland tissue of Perna viridis exposed to water-accommodated fractions (WAFs) of petrol and diesel at 0.5% and 5% concentrations over 5-, 10-, and 15-day periods. Increased lipid peroxidation, protein carbonyl, DNA integrity, and hydrogen peroxide in WAF-exposed specimens are indicative of oxidative damage due to dissolved petroleum extracts. A consistent increase in superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, glutathione-S-transferase, reduced glutathione, and ascorbic acid in WAF-exposed specimens signify the importance of antioxidants in protecting the cell against the oxidative damage arising from petroleum contamination. Grapevine virus A (GVA) has a quasispecies nature and is closely associated with the rugose-wood disease complex of Vitis vinifera L. In the different growing regions of table grape in Sichuan, southwest China, the incidence of GVA infection was found to be 16.9% by ELISA detection among 178 grape plants (Vitis vinifera L. × Vitis labrusca L.). The genus Fritillaria embraces about 165 taxa in the family Liliaceae. In this study, the molecular phylogenetic relationships between 10 Fritillaria taxa were presented. Fritillaria spp. were collected from their natural habitats, and specimens with different morphological features were obtained via selective breeding. Specimens with the desired characters were presented as promising candidate cultivars for ornamental use. Phylogenetic analysis was based on DNA sequences of the chloroplast trnL-trnF region. The phylogeny was constructed using the neighbor joining, maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference methods. Alocasia macrorrhizos (L.) (Araceae), a coarse and erect plant that is widely cultivated to be eaten as a vegetable throughout Bangladesh, has been reported to possess a number of medicinal properties. The antihyperglycemic, antioxidant, and cytotoxic effects of the methanol extract of A. macrorrhizos rhizomes were investigated. The extract was given at a single dose (250 and 500 mg/kg) in alloxan-induced hyperglycemic mice. The extract at 500 mg/kg produced a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in the blood glucose level (55.49%) at 8 h of treatment when compared with the control and was comparable with the reference drug, metformin. The extract was also subjected to antioxidant potentiality and brine shrimp lethality bioassays. The IC_{50} value of the extract was 693.0 \mug/mL and the LC_{50} was 188.14 \mug/mL.

In vitro antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antiproliferative activities of methanol, acetone, and ethyl acetate extracts of Sedum acre L. were determined. Their total phenolic contents as well as the concentrations of flavonoids were also evaluated. The total phenolic content was determined with Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and it ranged between 18.25 to 181.75 mg gallic acid/g. The concentration of flavonoids in various extracts of S. acre was determined by using a spectrophotometric method with aluminum chloride and the obtained results varied from 8.42 to 173.42 mg rutin/g. The antioxidant and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory potential of methanol extract from Arnica montana cultivated in Bulgaria was evaluated. For the determination of antioxidant activity 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) di-ammonium salt (ABTS) free radicals, and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay were used. Modified Ellman's colorimetric method was used for quantitative assessment of acetylcholinesterase inhibition potential. Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and galantamine hydrobromide were used as positive controls, respectively. The chemical fruit composition, phenolic profile, and corresponding total antioxidant activity of bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) and 2 commercial blueberry cultivars (Vaccinium corymbosum) were analyzed. Results from this study showed that cultivar Berkeley yielded the highest glucose and fructose contents (70.8 and 88.8 mg/g FW, respectively), and the sweetness index expressed a similar trend, achieving the highest value for cultivar Berkeley (279.2). Citric acid was the major organic acid in the berries tested. A gram-positive bacterium that accumulated poly(3-hydroxybutyric) acid (PHB) was isolated from petrol bunk soil. From its morphological and physiological properties and the nucleotide sequence (about 1.5 kb) of its 16S rDNA, it was identified as Microbacterium barkeri DSM 20145. Based on the available literature, this is the first report of PHB accumulation by Microbacterium sp. The isolate accumulated 0.6 g/L, or 29.7%, of PHB under growth conditions in a nitrogen-deficient medium containing glucose and yeast extract (4:1 ratio), with maximum production by 48 h. The present experiment was undertaken to determine the mutagenic potential of lead on the cytomorphology of Trigonella foenum-graecum L. and to determine the maximum concentration of lead nitrate that induces maximum genetic variability. The seeds were treated with 6 different concentrations (10, 25, 50, 100, 200, and 400 ppm) of lead nitrate. The higher concentrations of lead nitrate significantly reduced plant height, number of branches per plant, pollen fertility, and yield; higher concentrations also caused variation in the plants at the seedling and mature stages. SANIPACKING® cooling tower fill material and standard polypropylene fill material were compared in terms of biofilm formation potential and anti-Legionella activity within a 4-month period using a laboratory-scale recirculating water system. To investigate the genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships of Salvia miltiorrhiza and related species, we analyzed the nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region for 7 accessions of Salvia miltiorrhiza and another 23 samples from other taxa within the genus Salvia by maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference analyses. There were 257 variation sites amounting to 40.8% of the total base pairs. All of the data revealed abundant genetic diversity in the genus Salvia. The present study investigates changes in the inorganic ions, proline, and endogenous abscisic acid (ABA) contents of the apoplastic and symplastic compartments of leaves from drought-tolerant (Yakutiye) and drought-sensitive (Zulbiye) cultivars of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Drought stress caused a decrease in leaf water potential and stomatal conductance in both cultivars. Concentrations of proline in the drought-tolerant and drought-sensitive cultivars increased in response to drought stress in both compartments. To compare the antioxidant and antiradical activity of phenolic extracts of different species of wild almond kernels (including the brown skin), 10 wild almond species were selected from Shahindezh and Qasemloo Valley in West Azarbaijan Province, Iran. The fruits of these almonds were collected, their kernels were separated from their hulls and shells and then ground, and methanolic extracts were prepared from the kernels. The fatty acid compositions of the seeds of Peucedanum ruthenicum, Peucedanum chryseum, Peucedanum palimbioides, Peucedanum obtusifolium, and Peucedanum zedelmeierianum were investigated by gas chromatography (GC). The main fatty acids in the species were found to be palmitic acid (C 16:0, 5.78%-14.68%), oleic acid (C 18:1 \omega-9, 31.28%-68.06%), and linoleic acid (C 18:2 \omega-6, 15.99%-33.74%). Trace amounts of cis-vaccenic acid (C 18:1 \omega-7, 0.82%-1.40%) were found in the seed oils of all of the species investigated.

In this study, the phytase from Lactobacillus brevis strains isolated from fermented food products was produced and characterized. Phytase production of this strain was determined by production of clear zones around the colonies on the sodium phytate containing medium, after 48 h of incubation at 30 °C. The molecular weight of the phytase from Lactobacillus brevis was estimated as 73 kDa and 34 kDa on SDS-PAGE. The optimum activity of Lactobacillus brevis extracellular and intracellular enzymes emerged at 120 °C, pH 3.4 and at 110 °C, pH 3.4, respectively. Hyperthyroidism increases the vulnerability of the heart to ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. Regarding the fact that diazepam also affects cardiac I/R injury, the current study was conducted to investigate the effect of diazepam on ischemia-reperfused isolated hyperthyroid rat heart. The animals were divided into 6 groups: the control, hyperthyroid, control diazepam (1 mg/kg), hyperthyroid diazepam (1 mg/kg), control diazepam (5 mg/kg), and hyperthyroid diazepam (5 mg/kg) groups. Twenty-seven aqueous extracts obtained from 21 plants used in the treatment of respiratory tract infections as folk remedies in Turkey were investigated for their relative total phenolic contents and antioxidant, antibacterial, antimycobacterial, and antifungal activities. Antibacterial and antifungal activities against dermatophytes and yeast-like fungi were determined using the microdilution method. Antibacterial activity of all extracts was more pronounced against gram-positive bacteria than against gram-negative bacteria. These extracts also exhibited higher antifungal activity against Candida krusei than ketaconazole. Antioxidant responses in the estuarine mysid, Mesopodopsis zeylanica, were used to assess mercury (Hg) metal contamination in relation to salinity. Natural mysids acclimatized at 5 psu were subjected to laboratory exposures of 5, 15, and 25 psu salinity singly and under the sublethal Hg concentration of 5 µg/L (one-fifth of 24 h LC_{50} value). Lipid peroxidation in the test species increased with salinity variation from 5 to 15 psu and retained the same up to 25 psu with no change after Hg addition.
