Wheat landraces could be unique sources of favorable genes for agronomic traits like yield and insect, pest, and disease resistances, as well as quality characteristics that are important for breeding programs. Molecular marker systems offer great opportunities to characterize wheat accessions, which in particular are not morphologically identifiable. In this study, 20 bread wheat landraces collected from different regions of Turkey were characterized by using microsatellite markers (SSRs) and morphological characters. Seventeen morphological characters were used. Fifteen SSR primers were prescreened and the 7 most polymorphic primers were employed in characterization. The most polymorphic SSR loci were Xgwm 95 and …

Utilization Of Gold Nanostructures In Biomedical Applications, Gamze Tan, Mehmet Ali̇ Onur, Necdet Sağlam

Turkish Journal of Biology

Every living organism on earth owes its viability to its different sizes of nanostructures and the interaction of these structures at the nano size. Nanotechnology gives us an opportunity to understand nanoscale processes in living organisms and interfere with and manipulate them. Today, biocompatible nanosized structures are designed by applying developments in nanotechnology to biomedicine; thus, therapeutic agents are available to reach diseased tissues and even cells. However, it is essential that nanomaterials that would be used for therapeutic aims be targetable to diseased areas and have low toxicity. In addition, these nanomaterials must have high biocirculation and pharmacokinetic properties. …

Turkish Journal of Biology

In this study, our aim was to develop a new simple technique for isolation of mesenchymal stem cells from adipose tissue. For this purpose, mesenchymal stem cells were isolated from rat adipose tissue by using the primary explant culture technique. When the cells became confluent, they were passaged 4 times by using the standard trypsinization method with trypsin/EDTA solution. Cells at second passage were characterized by using immunofluorescence staining against CD13 and CD29 markers. The results showed that these cultured cells were positive for CD13 and CD29 markers. Flow cytometry analysis was also done against CD29, CD90, CD54, MHC Class …

Identification And Isolation Of Salt-Stress-Responsive Transcripts From Gossypium Arboreum L., Muhammad Naveed Shahid, Adil Jamal, Bushra Rashid, Beenish Aftab, Tayyab Husnain

Turkish Journal of Biology

Salinity has adverse effects on plant development and ultimately reduces production. Very few reports on the genes induced by salt stress in Gossypium arboreum are available. In this report salt-stress-responsive genes were screened from cotton leaves using the differential display (DD) technique, and gene expression was compared under control and salt stressed conditions. By using a 107 primer combination, 25 gene fragments were found to be up-regulated in response to salt stress. Out of 25 induced fragments, 12 were rejected as false positives after reamplification and quality control assay. The remaining 13 fragments were selected for cloning and genetic transformation. …

Current Theories On The Human Sex Ratio, Yisroel Cofsky Jan 2012

Current Theories On The Human Sex Ratio, Yisroel Cofsky

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The human sex ratio is skewed toward males, and this is the subject of much research. A review of some of the theories currently available was conducted, searching and analyzing the current scientific literature. Suggestions to explain the ratio include unequal proportions of X and Y sperm, the effect of maternal diet, maternal testosterone levels, and the natural fluctuations in the consistency of the cervical mucus. Although the difference in X/Y sperm proportions does not adequately explain all the data, the other theories do seem to explain the greater percentage of male births. However, there is still not enough information …
