Folk Medicines In The Villages Of Ilıca District (Erzurum, Turkey), Ufuk Özgen, Yusuf Kaya, Peter Houghton

Turkish Journal of Biology

The villages of Ilıca District in Erzurum Province, Turkey, were surveyed in terms of plants and animals used traditionally for medicinal purposes. Plants were compiled according to their families, botanical names, local names, usages, and applications. A total of 70 plant species belonging to 29 families are used by village people to treat a wide range of complaints, such as hemorrhoids, urinary system infections, stomach disorders, respiratory diseases, skin diseases, rheumatism, and jaundice. In addition, 3 animal species are used for the treatment of some diseases. The collected data were compared with those formerly recorded.

Karyology Of The Scorzonera L. (Asteraceae) Taxa From Turkey, Esra Marti̇n, Özlem Çeti̇n, Serdar Makbul, Ahmet Duran, Meryem Şeker, Derya Boduroğlu, Bahri̇ye Eşmekaya

Turkish Journal of Biology

In this study, the karyotypes of 13 taxa of the tribe Lactuceae growing naturally in Turkey were examined. Of the species of the genus Scorzonera L. (Asteraceae), S. laciniata L. subsp. laciniata, S. cana (C.A.Mey.) Hoffm. var. jacquiniana (W.Koch) Chamb., S. suberosa C.Koch subsp. suberosa, S. mollis M.Bieb. subsp. mollis, S. papposa DC., S. lacera Boiss. & Bal., S. elata Boiss., and S. parviflora Jacq. have a diploid chromosome number of 2n = 14. For S. phaeopappa (Boiss.) Boiss., this number is 2n = 28, and for S. eriophora DC., S. pseudolanata Grossh., S. tomentosa L., and S. kotschyi Boiss., …

Determination Of Genetic Relationships Among Velezia L. Caryophyllaceae) Species Using Rapd Markers, İlham Eröz Poyraz, Emel Sözen, Ebru Ataşlar, İsmai̇l Poyraz Jan 2012

Determination Of Genetic Relationships Among Velezia L. Caryophyllaceae) Species Using Rapd Markers, İlham Eröz Poyraz, Emel Sözen, Ebru Ataşlar, İsmai̇l Poyraz

Turkish Journal of Biology

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to determine genetic relationships among Velezia L. species from Turkey. A total of 432 amplified bands were obtained using 14 RAPD primers. The polymorphism in RAPD markers was high (98.61%) and was sufficient to distinguish each species. The degree of band-sharing was used for evaluating the genetic similarity between species and for constructing a dendrogram by the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA). Genetic relationships among the species were found to be fully consistent with those obtained by the use of morphological characters. Data obtained from our study demonstrated that …

Calcium Oxalate Crystal Types In Three Oak Species (Quercus L.) In Turkey, Bedri̇ Serdar, Hati̇ce Demi̇ray Jan 2012

Calcium Oxalate Crystal Types In Three Oak Species (Quercus L.) In Turkey, Bedri̇ Serdar, Hati̇ce Demi̇ray

Turkish Journal of Biology

Crystal types from 3 oak species representing 3 different sections of the genus Quercus were identified. Crystals were studied with scanning electron microscopy after localisation by light microscopy. The crystals were composed of calcium oxalate silicates as whewellite (calcium oxalate monohydrate) composites. In Quercus macranthera Fisch. et Mey. subsp. syspirensis (C.Koch) Menitsky (İspir oak) from the white oaks (section Quercus: Leucobalanus), whewellite and trihydrated weddellites coexisted. Axial parenchyma cells included 30 crystal chains with walls as chambers in uniseriate ray cells; some cells had many crystals without any chambers and were small. Long thin crystals were found adherent to the …

A Comparative Study On The Fatty Acid Composition Of The Oils From Five Bupleurum Species Collected From Turkey, Hati̇ce Taner Saraçoğlu, Gökhan Zengi̇n, Mehtap Akin, Apdurahman Aktümsek Jan 2012

A Comparative Study On The Fatty Acid Composition Of The Oils From Five Bupleurum Species Collected From Turkey, Hati̇ce Taner Saraçoğlu, Gökhan Zengi̇n, Mehtap Akin, Apdurahman Aktümsek

Turkish Journal of Biology

The oil content and fatty acid compositions of 5 Bupleurum species (B. intermedium, B. lancifolium, B. croceum, B. rotundifolium, and B. cappadocicum) were determined. Their oil contents ranged from 2.87% to 4.20%. Gas chromatography (GC) was used for the fatty acid composition. Twenty-one fatty acids were identified and quantified by GC. Oleic acid (C18:1) accounted for more than 50% of the total fatty acids in 3 of the Bupleurum species (B. intermedium, B. lancifolium, and B. rotundifolium). The total unsaturated fatty acid contents varied from 67.28% in B. cappadocicum to 87.06% in B. rotundifolium. The total saturated fatty acids represent …
