Ferroelectric Glass-Ceramic Sintering Aid For Lead Titanate Ceramics, P Sooksaen, I M. Reaney, D C. Sinclair
Ferroelectric Glass-Ceramic Sintering Aid For Lead Titanate Ceramics, P Sooksaen, I M. Reaney, D C. Sinclair
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
Silicate-based glass that devitrifies on heating to form ferroelectric lead titanate has been developed. The potential for use as sintering aid in PbO-based electroceramics has been evaluated by studying the densification of PbTiO3 (PT) with increasing wt% addition of glass powder. As the wt% glass content increased, the density increased, the maximum and room temperature relative permittivity decreased and there was also a decrease in Tc and the c/a ratio. The decrease in Tc is believed to be due to increased clamping from neighbouring grains as the density of the PT increases. The decrease in maximum and room temperature relative …

Primary Analysis Of Effective Permeability Of The Flame In Burning Natural Gas, R Jaroslav, R Magdalena
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
This paper presents a method of analysis of effective permeability of the flame in burning natural gas. In order to conduct a complex analysis, it is necessary to determine this parameter as a special case of the process of quasi-plasma nature for the purpose of investigating the options for application of suitable industrial methods applied in similar cases. We observed the synergy of solenoid parameters of the plasma part of the flame with ceramic materials without any special additional customization of the measurement device. The processed results of measurement demonstrate additional requirements necessary for measurement technology. The method was applied …

Journal of Electrochemistry
Corrosion of condenser is very seriously in chlorine-alkali industry, which could lead to fatal disaster. The most commonly used material in low pressure condenser includes steel of 16MnR,10#,and welding rod of J507.Electrochemical analysis of the three materials in 29.9%(by mass) calcium chloride(CaCl2) solution was carried out.The corrosion current density icorr and impedance parameters of the three materials in 29.9% CaCl2 solution were estimated separately. The result showed that in the tripartite phase regions where the 10# seamless tube and 16MnR armor plate were jointed by welding, the weld was firstly eroded and suggested that the chlorine condenser should be examined and repaired every year.

Materials Engineering
Against a backdrop of compelling societal needs, graduates in science and engineering now must master their disciplines and demonstrate a sophisticated level of cognitive, affective and social development. This has lead a number of national and international commissions on science and engineering to urge educators to re-think the way in which STEM disciplines are taught. We have chosen to "repackage" a traditional undergraduate materials engineering curriculum in a form designed to promote the development of higher-order cognitive skills like self-directed learning and design. Classic metallurgy experiments have been converted to project-based learning experiences where students are put in the role …

Trajectory Shaping Of Surface-To-Surface Missile With Terminal Impact Angle Constraint, S. Subchan
Makara Journal of Technology
This paper presents trajectory shaping of a surface-to-surface missile attacking a fixed with terminal impact angle constraint. The missile must hit the target from above, subject to the missile dynamics and path constraints. The problem is reinterpreted using optimal control theory resulting in the formulation of minimum integrated altitude. The formulation entails nonlinear, two-dimensional missile flight dynamics, boundary conditions and path constraints. The generic shape of optimal trajectory is: level flight, climbing, diving; this combination of the three flight phases is called the bunt manoeuvre. The numerical solution of optimal control problem is solved by a direct collocation method. The …

It is yet another sign that I am aging. More and more often when young researchers hand me a written report of their research, I find myself criticizing their introductory section: “You need to start your literature survey with the original papers on this topic. Go and read…” followed by a citation to some classic of the learned literature.

First-principles calculations of electron tunneling transport in nanoscale Ni and Co break-junctions reveal strong dependence of the conductance on the magnetization direction, an effect known as tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance TAMR. An important aspect of this phenomenon stems from resonant states localized in the electrodes near the junction break. The energy and broadening of these states is strongly affected by the magnetization orientation due to spin-orbit coupling, causing TAMR to be sensitive to bias voltage on a scale of a few millivolts. Our results bear a resemblance to recent experimental data and suggest that TAMR driven by resonant states is a …

Self-directed learning is a key competency in life-long learning, an outcome often cited for engineering education, and is dependent on students' motivation, meta-cognition, and self-regulation with regards to a learning task. Few studies have addressed the aspects of engineering learning environments that promote the development of self-directed learning abilities. The goal of this study was to identify relationships between students' perceptions of their self-directed learning ability and their learning motivation within a project-based learning environment. Junior engineering students in a test cohort with heavy emphasis on project-based learning completed surveys on self-directed learning aptitude and learning motivation. Responses were compared …
