Damage Analysis Modified Trac Computer Program (Damtrac), George H. Baker Iii, Alan D. Mcnutt, G. Bradford Shea, David M. Rubenstein

Department of Integrated Science and Technology - Faculty Scholarship

A computer program tailored for EMP damage analysis of solid-state circuitry has been developed by modifying the existing TRAC network analysis program. Modification of the TRAC diode and transistor models to include breakdown parameters and the addition of a semiconductor device parameter library have greatly simplified the analyst's task. An added feature is a subroutine that automatically calculates the amplitude and duration of transient power dissipated in electronic circuit components.

Ellipsometric Function Of A Film-Substrate System: Applications To The Design Of Reflection-Type Optical Devices And To Ellipsometry, R. M.A. Azzam, A.-R. M. Zaghloul, N. M. Bashara

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The ratio ρ = Rp/Rs of the complex amplitude-reflection coefficients Rp and Rs for light polarized parallel (p) and perpendicular (s) to the plane of incidence, reflected from an optically isotropic film-substrate system, is investigated as a function of the angle of incidence ϕ and the film thickness d. Both constant-angle-of-incidence contours (CAIC) and constant-thickness contours (CTC) of the ellipsometric function ρ(ϕ,d) in the complex ρ plane are examined. For transparent films, ρ(ϕ,d) is a periodic function of d with period Dϕ that is a function of ϕ. …

Design Of A Yig-Tuned Oscillator, Tien Liang Jin Jan 1975

Design Of A Yig-Tuned Oscillator, Tien Liang Jin

Theses

A technique for designing YIG (yttrium-iron garnet) tuned transistor oscillators, tunable over the range of frequencies from 500 to 950 MHZ, is presented. The approach taken differs appreciably from that used in the design of conventional LC-tuned oscillators. One major difference is that the YIG tuning mechanism is electrically controlled. The YIG tuning element is treated as a single unit and is not resolved into an equivalent LC circuit. Instead, a direct method using reflection coefficients measured at network terminals to characterize various design stages is applied. The transistor is also characterized by reflection and transmission coefficients, i.e., S-parameters. Thus …

The Theory Of Multiple Measurements Techniques In Distributed Parameter Systems, Babajimi Claudius Okunseinde Jun 1974

The Theory Of Multiple Measurements Techniques In Distributed Parameter Systems, Babajimi Claudius Okunseinde

Dissertations

A comprehensive theory of multiple measurements for the optimum on-line state estimation and parameter identification in a class of noisy, dynamic distributed systems, is developed in this study. Often in practical monitoring and control problems, accurate measurements of a critical variable are not available in a desired form or at a desired sampling rate. Rather, noisy independent measurements of related forms of the variable may be available at different sampling rates. Multiple measurements theory thus involves the optimum weighting and combination of different types of available measurements. One of the contributions of this work is the development of a unique …

Synthetically-Generated Holographic Memory System Utilizing Partially Coherent Light, William A. Barrett May 1974

Synthetically-Generated Holographic Memory System Utilizing Partially Coherent Light, William A. Barrett

Dissertations

This dissertation proposes a novel form of optical ROM for the digital computer. This memory makes use of holographic techniques because of the advantages offered by holographic memories over conventional optical ones, especially with regard to dust and scratch sensitivity.

These advantages have long been recognized by workers in the field, indeed several holographic optical memories have already been proposed.

A survey of the state of the art of digital computer memories is offered in the introductory part of the thesis. Particular emphasis is placed on optical memories. A brief review of basic holographic theory is also included for reference. …

Steady State And Dynamic Performance Of Anisotropic Reluctance Motor, S. Chandrasekhara Rao May 1974

Steady State And Dynamic Performance Of Anisotropic Reluctance Motor, S. Chandrasekhara Rao

Theses

The paper deals with a special type of reluctance motor called Anisotropic rotor reluctance motor. As the name implies, advantage is taken of the internal anisotropy of the rotor magnetic structure. Axially laminated grain oriented silicon steel is used in the rotor. This unconventional configuration of assembly of rotor laminations results in a high ratio of direct axis to quadrature axis reluctance. Compared to the conventional reluctance motor, pull out torque of more than three times and a power factor as high as in an induction motor is obtained. Several motors of ratings up to 60 HP. were built and …

Dynamics Of Interconnected Systems With Pulse Frequency Modulators, Halil Ozcan Gulcur Oct 1973

Dynamics Of Interconnected Systems With Pulse Frequency Modulators, Halil Ozcan Gulcur

Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation is to study the dynamics of systems consisting of interconnections of an arbitrary number of complete-reset pulse frequency modulators (CRPFM's) and linear dynamical subsystems (in general, time-varying, lumped and/or distributed). CRPFM, which represents a generalization of several types of pulse frequency modulators (PFM's), consists of two basic components; a multi-input dynamic element, called the timing-filter (TF) and a threshold device (TD). Whenever the output of the TF reaches a given threshold value the TD generates an impulse and, at the same time, resets all the states of the TF to zero. This dissertation is devoted …

Correlation Of Drain Breakdown With Excess Noise And Other Surface-Related Phenomena In Enhancement Mosfets, Jerry J. Rij Sep 1973

Correlation Of Drain Breakdown With Excess Noise And Other Surface-Related Phenomena In Enhancement Mosfets, Jerry J. Rij

Theses

An investigation of semiconductor surface-related phenomena has been undertaken to correlate 1/F noise with drain breakdown in P-channel enhancement MOSFET's. Increases in the intensity of drain current fluctuations at 10Hz and at 1KHz, particularly at the higher frequency, was observed following accelerated life-testing for threshold voltage drift. It was also concluded that mobile ions near the oxide-semiconductor interface produce a sharp increase in fast trapping centers. It was also found that 1/F noise intensity consistently peaked at the threshold of drain breakdown and that it steadily decreased with further increases in drain current. Of all the transistors tested, those with …

Adaptive, Differential Pulse-Code Modulation For Speech Processing, Peter Cummiskey Jun 1973

Adaptive, Differential Pulse-Code Modulation For Speech Processing, Peter Cummiskey

Dissertations

The objective of the research reported here is the design of efficient speech coders that can easily be implemented in integrated circuit hardware. Companding techniques like those introduced by M. R. Winkler, J. A. Greefkes, F. DeJager, A. Tomozawa and H. Kaneko were explored along with a large body of theory concerning the application of linear prediction to speech coding.

The best features of the speech signal to be measured and coded are the overall amplitude, the resonant frequencies and dampings of the vocal cavity and the fundamental frequency of the vocal cord oscillations. Adaptive quantization was used to track …

Digital Computer Solution Of Electromagnetic Transients In Large Power Systems, Bijan Navidbakhsh

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is an introduction to the solution of electromagnetic transients by a combination of the Bergeran method of characteristics and the application of trapezoidal rule of integration.

Three test examples solved by digital computer illustrate the step by step solution and computer programming.

To compare this method with the Laplace transformation technique, a test problem solved by both methods and also digital computer is illustrated. In conclusion, the advantages and disadvantages of both methods are compared.

Trajectories Describing The Evolution Of Polarized Light In Homogeneous Anisotropic Media And Liquid Crystals, Rasheed M.A. Azzam, N. M. Bashara, B. E. Merrill Apr 1973

Trajectories Describing The Evolution Of Polarized Light In Homogeneous Anisotropic Media And Liquid Crystals, Rasheed M.A. Azzam, N. M. Bashara, B. E. Merrill

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Trajectories are given that describe the evolution of the ellipse of polarization in the complex plane for light propagating in a homogeneous anisotropic medium and along the helical axis of a cholesteric liquid crystal. For the general homogeneous anisotropic medium that exhibits combined birefringence and dichroism the trajectory is a spiral that converges to the low-absorption eigenpolarization. For pure birefringence the trajectory becomes a complete circle that encloses one eigenpolarization, whereas for pure dichroism the trajectory becomes an arc of a circle that ends at the low-absorption eigenstate. The case of a cholesteric (or twisted nematic) liquid crystal leads to …

Loci Of Invariant-Azimuth And Invariant-Ellipticity Polarization States Of An Optical System, Rasheed M.A. Azzam, N. M. Bashara Jan 1973

Loci Of Invariant-Azimuth And Invariant-Ellipticity Polarization States Of An Optical System, Rasheed M.A. Azzam, N. M. Bashara

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The loci of polarization states for which either the ellipticity alone or the azimuth alone remains invariant upon passing through an optical system are introduced. The cartesian equations of these two loci are derived in the complex plane in which the polarization states are represented. The equations are quartic and are conveniently expressed in terms of the elements of the Jones. matrix of the optical system. As an exple the loci are determined for a system composed of a π/4 rotator followed by a quarter-wave retarder.

Analogy Between Linear Optical Systems And Linear Two-Port Electrical Networks, Rasheed M.A. Azzam, N. M. Bashara Oct 1972

Analogy Between Linear Optical Systems And Linear Two-Port Electrical Networks, Rasheed M.A. Azzam, N. M. Bashara

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Attention is called to the analogy between linear optical systems and linear two-port electrical networks. For both, the transformation of a pair of oscillating quantities between input and output is of interest. The mapping of polarization by an optical system and of impedance (admittance) by a two-port network is described by a bilinear transformation. Therefore for each transfer property of a system of one type, there is a similar property for the system of the other type. Two-port electrical networks are synthesized whose impedance-(or admittance-) mapping properties are the same as the polarization-mapping properties of a given optical system. The …

Methods For Acoustic Holography And Acoustic Measurements, Wolfgang Fischer Jun 1972

Methods For Acoustic Holography And Acoustic Measurements, Wolfgang Fischer

Dissertations

In this dissertation, a novel "four-step acoustical holographic imaging system" is described and several means for its implementation are analyzed both theoretically and experimentally. This system is compared with other methods of acoustical holography, (ie. permitting to obtain a visible, 3-D image of an object insonified with supersonic waves) and some of its advantages are indicated.

The use of optical holographic techniques to convert an arbitrary acoustic image to a visible image is investigated and a new method - the "holographic sound image converter" - is introduced and analyzed. This converter consists of the "holographic interferometer" and an appropriate "coupler". …

Electromagnetic Wave Propagation In Nonuniform Waveguides With Perfect Conducting Walls, Irwin Share Jun 1972

Electromagnetic Wave Propagation In Nonuniform Waveguides With Perfect Conducting Walls, Irwin Share

Dissertations

The analysis of nonuniform waveguides is formulated in terms of non-orthogonal generalized coordinates by utilizing the Hertz vector potentials and the Riemann metric tensor.

When the Hertz potential is expressible as a function of the propagation coordinate times a function of the transverse coordinates, then the nonuniform waveguide may be represented by transverse equations and a set of uncoupled nonuniform transmission lines. This decomposition facilitates studying propagation along the propagation coordinate. Sufficient conditions to achieve this decomposition are investigated. It is demonstrated that these constraints may provide guidelines for selecting a useful coordinate system to describe the nonuniform waveguide. In …

An Investigation Of The Neuromuscular Command In The Control Of Respiration, Nirmal Kumar Mishra Jun 1972

An Investigation Of The Neuromuscular Command In The Control Of Respiration, Nirmal Kumar Mishra

Dissertations

The purpose of the investigation is to study the signals involved in the respiratory system and to obtain a model for the dynamics including the activity of the phrenic nerve as the input and the transpulmonary pressure, air flow and the volume as the response.

Experiments were done on anasthetized dogs under natural breathing, with steady state response to various levels of CO2 in the inspired air, and under electrophrenic stimulation. Bipolar electrodes were used at the phrenic nerve, in the cervical region, either for recording the phrenic neurogram or for supramaximal unilateral (or bilateral) stimulation using pulse frequency modulated …

Centering In Parallel Channel Systems, Allen Katz Jun 1971

Centering In Parallel Channel Systems, Allen Katz

Dissertations

Several types of signal processing systems in which the signal flows along parallel channels in a fashion similar to the auditory system have been investigated. The effect of excitation with signals containing both single and multiple spectral peaks (formants) was considered. In particular, the effect of nonlinear interaction between channels, referred to as centering, in the presence of noise was studied.

These systems were investigated for their value, both as information processing networks and as models of the auditory system.

The analysis indicates that parallel channel systems, in general, exhibit excellent performance in the presence of noise, and that a …

Sidelobe Suppression In Chirp Radar Systems, Stephen N. Honickman May 1971

Sidelobe Suppression In Chirp Radar Systems, Stephen N. Honickman

Dissertations

Pulse radars extend target range detection by increasing the transmitted pulse width. On the other hand, target resolution is enhanced by reducing the system pulse width. These dichotomous requirements led to the invention of chirp radar systems which achieve greater target resolution for a given detectable range by frequency modulating the carrier frequency of the transmitted pulse. Along with the advent of chirp radars came the extremely simple and reliable technique of chirp signal generation known as "passive generation". However, one of the undesirable features of "passive generation" lies in the infinite time required for transmission of the resultant pulse, …

Reliability Aspects Of Semiconductor Surface Protective Coatings, Robert Edward Mcmillan May 1970

Reliability Aspects Of Semiconductor Surface Protective Coatings, Robert Edward Mcmillan

Dissertations

This research was directed towards the occurrence and im-portance of surface leakage in reverse biased semiconductor diodes and the relation of this leakage to the reliability of a device under use conditions. As a result of this study, it is possible to predict one important leakage mechanism after such back-biased diode units have been subjected to long periods of temperature and humidity. This theory is consistent with tests of commercially available units, some of which have very slight surface leakage and others very large surface leakage.

Further, the usefulness of various possible passivating coatings is critically analyzed on the basis …

Oscillations In Pulse Frequency Modulated Control Systems, Warren Joseph Guy May 1970

Oscillations In Pulse Frequency Modulated Control Systems, Warren Joseph Guy

Dissertations

This dissertation is concerned with oscillations and their stability which occur in a control system containing two nonlinearities, separated by linear elements. Specifically the nonlinearities are Integral Pulse Frequency Modulators and the linear elements are described by ordinary differential equations which are linear. The IPFM can be modelled by a quantizer with hysteresis and many other PFM laws are related to IPFM, thus the study applies to more than just IPFM alone.

Boundaries on the system parameters are identified within which free oscillation may be possible. These boundaries give sufficient conditions for stability and necessary conditions for instability. Also since …

Correlation Of 1/F Noise With Threshold Drift In Mosfet's, John Peter Rooney Jun 1969

Correlation Of 1/F Noise With Threshold Drift In Mosfet's, John Peter Rooney

Theses

A brief review of the fundamentals of MOSFET's is given. A correlation between threshold drift and surface states is made, with a following correlation between surface states and 1/f noise. It therefore follows that MOSFET's with a high 1/f noise level will drift more than those with a low level of 1/f noise. Experiments were carried out to show this effect, but no clear cut conclusions can be drawn from the experimental work.

Concepts In Lsi Servo-Control-Electronics, Alfons Alfred Tuszynski May 1969

Concepts In Lsi Servo-Control-Electronics, Alfons Alfred Tuszynski

Dissertations

This thesis deals with the engineering aspects of control electronics. It examines modern concepts of servo-control theory in the light of recent developments in the technology of monolithic circuits. Applicational considerations are slanted towards Aerospace standards of reliability and power-consumption economy.

Conclusions drawn from the discussion of fabrication constraints and performance requirements lead to a preference for digital implementations. Yield problems on one hand and aging effects on the other greatly reduce the feasibility rating of analog arrays.

Current practice in servo-control electronics revolves around purely analog implementations, sampled-data systems and Primitive on-off arrangements. The motivation behind the status quo …

The Mechanism Of Second Breakdown In Transistors, Eugene David Fabricius Jun 1968

The Mechanism Of Second Breakdown In Transistors, Eugene David Fabricius

Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the behavior of electrons and holes in a semiconductor or diode under conditions of high current density as a function of temperature, and to relate this behavior to the phenomenon of Second Breakdown. The approach used is that of magnetohydrodynamics, the electrons and holes being treated as a plasma "gas" embedded in the dielectric of the semiconductor.

This approach is unique in the following respects:

  1. This is the first attempt to explain second breakdown in terms of magnetohydrodynamics.
  2. This is the first time an explanation of pinching in a solid at room …

Realization Of Transfer Impedances Using Distributed Rc Elements In A Common Ground Linvill Configuration, Walter Woronka Jun 1968

Realization Of Transfer Impedances Using Distributed Rc Elements In A Common Ground Linvill Configuration, Walter Woronka

Theses

One of several synthesis procedures available for the realization of a transfer admittance is that of Linvill. This synthesis procedure employs an active element, a negative impedance converter (NIC), to shift the poles of passive immittance functions from the negative real axis into the complex plane to realize the desired transfer immittance function.

The Linvill synthesis procedure is extended to networks containing cascaded distributed RC elements and the conditions which must be satisfied to realize a transfer impedance using these distributed elements are defined.

Design Of Linear Control Systems With Distributed Parameter Elements By Parameter Plane Techniques, Murray Weinberg May 1968

Design Of Linear Control Systems With Distributed Parameter Elements By Parameter Plane Techniques, Murray Weinberg

Dissertations

This dissertation extends the application of parameter plane techniques to a number of areas. Specifically, the parameter plane technique can now be used to determine absolute stability, relative stability, and the location of roots of the closed-loop characteristic equation of systems containing both lumped and distributed parameter elements. The advantages of utilizing this technique are that results can be obtained as two system parameters are varied simultaneously and higher order systems can be treated as easily as low order ones.

Investigation of the mapping of real roots resulted in the derivation of a theorem which relates the number of real …

Noise Spectral Density As A Diagnostic Tool For Reliability Of P-N Junctions, Young Duck Kim May 1968

Noise Spectral Density As A Diagnostic Tool For Reliability Of P-N Junctions, Young Duck Kim

Dissertations

The feasibility of choosing noise-voltage spectral density as a prediction parameter for the degradation of p-n junctions has been examined both theoretically and through a series of life-tests.

Experimental facts show that the noise-voltage spectral density, Sv(w), observed in a p-n junction under the breakdown condition tends to be "white" (which contradicts the 1/f-noise theory), and Sv(w) is inversely proportional to the breakdown current (which contradicts the shot-noise theory). Furthermore, some p-n junctions display one or more multiple peaks of Sv(w) at different current levels which can not be explained by any of the …

Fault Protection With A Digital Computer, George D. Rockefeller May 1968

Fault Protection With A Digital Computer, George D. Rockefeller

Theses

A fundamental basis has been developed for the use of a time-shared stored-program digital computer to perform many of the electrical power-system protective-relay functions in a substation. Logic operations are given to detect a fault, locate it and initiate the opening of the appropriate circuit breakers, whether the fault is in the station or on lines radiating from the station.

The instantaneous value of the station voltages and currents are sampled at a 0.5 ms rate, converted to digital form and stored for computer main-frame use. Operating times are compatible with the 25 ms breaker trip capability of modern two-cycle …

A Study Of The Properties Of The Biconical Antenna, Kurt Frank Hafner Jr. May 1968

A Study Of The Properties Of The Biconical Antenna, Kurt Frank Hafner Jr.

Theses

Expressions are found for the fields produced by TM and TEM modes along a finitely conducting biconical antenna. Expressions are also found for the TM and TEM fileds along a biconical antenna having a lossy dielectric coating. It is shown that the antenna losses produce an anntenuation of the the fields along the antenna. It is found that because there is a dispersion of the fields along the biconical antenna, the attenuation produced by the losses is, in genaral, not characterized by simple exponential.

A solution is obtained for the fields of the TEM wave along a biconical antenna coated …

Linear And Adaptive Delta Modulation, John Edward Abate May 1967

Linear And Adaptive Delta Modulation, John Edward Abate

Dissertations

New results are presented offering insight into the performance and optimization of linear and adaptive delta modulation, together with a comparison with pulse code modulation. The results are applied to three cases of practical importance: television, speech, and broadband signals.

The results presented can be grouped into the following three categories. First, a performance characterization of linear delta modulation (DM) is given. With the aid of certain empirical observations made from computer simulations, closed form expressions are found for granular noise, overload noise, and minimum quantization noise powers. These results permit the prediction of the optimum performance obtainable from DM …
