Assessing Hardware Security Threats Posed By Hardware Trojans In Power Electronics, Quinn Kinzie

All Theses

This study investigates the threat of hardware Trojans (HTs) in power electronics applications, a rising concern due to the growing demand for cost-effective embedded solutions in power systems. With the supply chain for electronic hardware devices expanding globally, particularly to low-cost foundries in foreign locations, there is an increasing risk of HT attacks. While there has been extensive research on HTs in computer applications, little consideration has been given to their threat in power electronics. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of a power electronics HT by implementing a novel HT design into a gate drive circuit. Additionally, the research proposes …

Design And Evaluation Of High Power, High Efficiency And High Power Density Motor Drives For More Electric Aircrafts, Zhao Yuan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

More-electric aircraft (MEA) is an attractive concept as it can reduce carbon dioxide emission, relieve fossil-fuel consumption, improve the overall efficiency of aircraft, and reduce the operational costs. However, it poses substantial challenges in designing a high-performance motor drive system for such applications. In the report of Aircraft Technology Roadmap to 2050, the propulsion converter is required to be ultra-high efficiency, high power density, and high reliability. Though the wide band-gap devices, such as the Silicon-carbide based Metal Oxide Silicon Field Effect (SiC-MOSFET), shows better switching performance and improved high-temperature performance compared to the silicon counterparts, applying it to the …

Very Low Power Cockcroft-Walton Voltage Multiplier For Rf Energy Harvesting Applications, Trace Langdon May 2019

Very Low Power Cockcroft-Walton Voltage Multiplier For Rf Energy Harvesting Applications, Trace Langdon

Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

A device was required that could harvest the electromagnetic energy present in ambient radio frequency (RF) signals. A part of this device must convert the AC RF signal received by the antenna into a DC signal that can be used in an embedded application. Since the RF signal amplitude is small, it must first be amplified and rectified to become a usable signal. The Cockcroft-Walton voltage multiplier is a subsystem of the design which ideally converts a 100 mV AC signal coming from the antenna to a 350 mV DC signal. The output of the voltage multiplier is used to …

Microgrids can provide the most promising means of integrating large amounts of distributed sources into the power grid and can supply reliable power to critical loads. However, managing distributed sources and loads within a microgrid during island and grid-tie modes and during transitions is a challenge. Stable operation of a microgrid is a concern specifically during the starting of motor loads, switching of large loads, and in presence of high penetration of renewable resources. Hence, a generalized control framework is required to regulate microgrid voltage and frequency, maintain power quality, manage Distributed Generations (DG) and ensure microgrid stability. Several control …

Smart Wall Outlet Design And Implementation For The Dc House Project, Kevin Roy Mendoza Jun 2014

Smart Wall Outlet Design And Implementation For The Dc House Project, Kevin Roy Mendoza

Master's Theses

Most everyday AC appliances are designed to operate off of 120V coming from the wall outlet in our homes. This voltage is a standard set from our established infrastructure. Unlike AC devices, DC devices do not have any set standard of voltage they all will run off of. This presents a problem for the DC house as the various loads that will be used will have different required input voltages. One set voltage for a wall outlet will not suffice for the DC House. This Smart Wall Outlet is designed with a DC-DC converter that will have its output voltage …

Theses and Dissertations

A new fault protection method responds to the current needs of emerging dc power distribution systems by coordinating electronic power converters and mechanical contactors to rapidly isolate short circuit faults while maintaining continuity of power to loads. This work is important because the increasing performance, higher efficiency, and decreasing cost of electronic power converters have spurred a rediscovery and proliferation of dc power distribution systems. Although dc distribution offers advantages such as higher transmission efficiency, higher power density, higher reliability, and ease of interfacing asynchronous sources, enthusiasm for adopting dc technologies suffers from widespread concern over the means to protect …

Lithium-Ion Ultracapacitor Energy Storage Integrated With A Variable Speed Wind Turbine For Improved Power Conversion Control, Goran Mandic

Theses and Dissertations

The energy of wind has been increasingly used for electric power generation worldwide due to its availability and ecologically sustainability. Utilization of wind energy in modern power systems creates many technical and economical challenges that need to be addressed for successful large scale wind energy integration. Variations in wind velocity result in variations of output power produced by wind turbines. Variable power output becomes a challenge as the amount of output power of the wind turbines integrated into power systems increases. Large power variations cause voltage and frequency deviations from nominal values that may lead to activation of relay protective …
