Examining The Relationships Between Performance Appraisal Reactions And Employee Engagement, Kenneth B. Levan

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the long-standing debate among scholars and practitioners regarding the effectiveness of the performance appraisal (PA) process as a useful tool to manage individual and organizational performance (Glover, 1996; Gruman & Saks, 2011; Kondrasuk, 2012; Light, 2010; Pulakos & O’Leary, 2011; Thomas & Bretz, 1994). To further this discussion, the relationship between employees’ reactions to the PA process and perceptions of engagement in the workplace is examined.

A survey of 466 respondents finds there to be a significant positive relationship between PA reactions and employee engagement. Other significant findings of the study include: 1) high correlations among Keeping …

The Impact Of Authentic Leadership Behavior On Employee Engagement And Organizational Ethical Culture In Nigeria, Adayehi B. Peter Dec 2016

The Impact Of Authentic Leadership Behavior On Employee Engagement And Organizational Ethical Culture In Nigeria, Adayehi B. Peter

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

Authenticity in leadership is an old phenomenon that has recently sparked a new research interest in management and the human resource development (HRD) literature (Peus, Wesche, Streicher, Braun, & Frey, 2012). An upswing in highly publicized corporate scandals, management malfeasance, and broader societal challenges facing public and private organizations has contributed to the recent attention placed on authenticity and authentic leadership (Walumbwa, Avolio, Gardner, Wernsing, & Peterson, 2008). Authentic leadership behavior allows leaders and organizations meet the raised expectations of fairness, morality, and social responsibility held by employees and organizational stakeholders (Kiersch, 2012).

The primary purpose of this study was …

An Examination Of Lmx And Procedural Justice On Performance Appraisal Satisfaction Within The Context Of A Distributed Workplace Arrangement, Debra A. Herd

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

Trends in the current literature emphasize the role of organizational context in employee performance appraisal processes (e.g., Levy & Williams, 2004; Pichler et al., 2015). Social context is a type of organizational context. Using hierarchical regression techniques and data from 138 U.S.-based employees, the study examined the social context of distributed workplace arrangements and the related implications of media richness and communication frequency in relation to leader–member exchange (LMX), procedural justice, and performance appraisal satisfaction. Research has revealed that manager–employee relationships and procedural justice perspectives positively influence performance appraisal satisfaction. However, researchers have yet to explore the impact distributed workplace …

A Comparison Of Managerial And Leadership Effectiveness Of Veteran And Civilian Developed Leaders In A Civilian Context, John C. Dexter Jul 2016

A Comparison Of Managerial And Leadership Effectiveness Of Veteran And Civilian Developed Leaders In A Civilian Context, John C. Dexter

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, there has been an increase in American patriotism that has facilitated a strong commitment of U.S. employers to actively recruit and hire military veterans. These highly publicized employer veteran hiring commitments easily number in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions. However, the commitments to employ veterans does not specify how these veterans will be employed. In fact, there is wide-spread difficulty in translating military training and experience to civilian applications, and there is virtually no empirical support as to whether veterans will be more of less successful in civilian employment than …

Examining The Relationship Between Procedural Justice, Perceived Organizational Support, Organizational Trust, Organizational Commitment, And Intent To Leave Among Temporary Employees, Kristen Waddell May 2016

Examining The Relationship Between Procedural Justice, Perceived Organizational Support, Organizational Trust, Organizational Commitment, And Intent To Leave Among Temporary Employees, Kristen Waddell

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

The nature of today’s business world is ever changing, and it is crucial that organizations remain flexible. In order to compete in this fast-paced business environment, companies must be able to react quickly to meet business demands while still keeping an eye on the bottom line, often referred to as strategic flexibility (Nadkarni & Herrmann, 2010). The use of temporary employees also allows organizations to target the specific skill set they need to further their businesses without extending their resources of both time and money by either recruiting individuals themselves or by developing their own employees (Chambel & Castanheira, 2006). …

Supervisor’S Engagement And Organization Outcomes: The Mediating Role Of Employee Engagement On Task Performance And Organizational Citizenship Behavior, Romell Thomas

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

Researchers have found that several positive outcomes exist when employees are in a state of engagement. Studies also show that supervisor engagement positively affects employee engagement. This study was conducted to examine how the positive affect of employee engagement as a result of supervisor engagement affects the organization outcomes of task performance and organization citizenship behavior. The researcher proposed a model of these relationships for the study.

The quantitative, cross-sectional study involved a survey to collect the 313 responses used for data analysis. Structural Equation Modeling was used to test the hypotheses. All hypotheses were supported, indicating support for the …

The Moderating Effect Of Individual Employee Attributes On The Relationship Between Managerial Communication And Employee Job Satisfaction In Times Of Change, Ashley Hall Mar 2016

The Moderating Effect Of Individual Employee Attributes On The Relationship Between Managerial Communication And Employee Job Satisfaction In Times Of Change, Ashley Hall

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

Change is common within organizations today, and companies are seeking employees who will adapt to the changes with a minimum level of disruption to the organization. Although a large literature base exists outlining ways to implement and manage change efforts from both research and practitioner perspectives, many change initiatives do not meet expectations. A lack of communication from management has been identified as a major contributor to resistance to change. As such, managerial communication plays an integral role in the change management process. This study investigated the moderating role of three individual employee attributes (i.e., organizational trust, managerial trust, and …

The Shared Services Organizational Model In Higher Education Enrollment Management: The Application Of The Transactional Components Of The Burke-Litwin Model Of Organizational Performance And Change And The Moderating Effect Of Employee Engagement On Individual Motivation, Rosemary Cooper

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

As a result of increased economic, social, and educational constraints, institutions of higher education are evaluating new approaches to operating in more restrictive environments. To mitigate these external constraints, institutional administrators are implementing organizational change structures that create efficiency, drive down costs and make the best use of human capital and technological resources. Within the last decade there has been strong encouragement from higher education pundits and consultants to implement the shared services organizational structure in higher education enrollment management divisions. Higher education institutions are borrowing the shared services organizational model from other industries and utilizing organizational change protocol from …

Examining The Influence Of Organizational Culture On Employees' Ethical Behavior In Public Sector Organizations, Richard H. Afedzie Nov 2015

Examining The Influence Of Organizational Culture On Employees' Ethical Behavior In Public Sector Organizations, Richard H. Afedzie

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

Much of the literature on organizational ethics attribute unethical behavior in the workplace as originating from greed, inadequate ethics training, lax ethics laws, and lenient disciplinary actions when ethical lapses do occur. While this perception advances a cogent argument, it does not examine the entire concept of unethical behavior, because it does not consider the organizational culture which clearly guides employees' ethical behavior and decision making in the organization. In this study, a basic interpretative qualitative research design was employed utilizing semi-structured interviews to investigate how organizational cultural systems, member interactions, leadership role modeling and training interventions influence employees' ethical …

Technology is an essential component of learning in the 21st century. College professors and teachers hold many assumptions regarding the technological skills and knowledge that students possess while learning in the college setting. In this article, we explore the technology use and attitudes towards technology held by students enrolled in a regional public university offering online, face-to-face and hybrid instruction. The understanding of students’ attitudes and use of technology is essential to informing the technological direction and pedagogical model in higher education from a traditional, lecture-based model to a technologically-enhanced model. In this study, we employed a mixed-method design using …

Exploring A Sociomaterial Perspective On Technology In Virtual Human Resource Development, Mary Helen Fagan Aug 2014

Exploring A Sociomaterial Perspective On Technology In Virtual Human Resource Development, Mary Helen Fagan

Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Problem

Technology is creating immersive digital ecosystems that will radically transform the way humans communicate, collaborate, and create. Virtual human resource development (VHRD) is an example of this phenomenon in the field of HRD. With the emergence of VHRD, HRD scholars need to develop more robust conceptualizations of technology, and HRD practitioners need to play a larger role in technology development. Enhanced theoretical perspectives on technology are needed to support these endeavors.

The Solution

A sociomaterial perspective on technology, which is being used for the study and development of phenomena such as virtual worlds in other disciplines, can help …

Exploring Generational Differences Between Generation Y And Baby Boomers In Work-Life Balance, Afton Barber Jun 2014

Exploring Generational Differences Between Generation Y And Baby Boomers In Work-Life Balance, Afton Barber

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

With the recent addition of Generation Y to the workforce, workplace dynamics are changing to reflect a labor force which now encompasses the four extant commonly working generations. This study seeks to identify generational differences found between two of the generations in the current workforce, Baby Boomers and Generation Y, by isolating a specific work value, work-life balance, as promoted through managerial practices. Limited research has examined the links among the topics of generational differences, work-life balance, and managerial practices. Therefore, this study will attempt to explore the relationships among the three topics.

Testing The Relationships Among Transformational Factors In A Postsecondary Environment, Gayle B. Wooten Jun 2014

Testing The Relationships Among Transformational Factors In A Postsecondary Environment, Gayle B. Wooten

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

The external environment is forcing many higher education institutions into transformational change. However, institutional change remains elusive and little research exists that explains how organizational change has been implemented in higher education. This study employed structural equation modeling to test the transformational factors in the Burke-Litwin Organizational Performance and Change model (1992) in a statewide technical college system. Results suggest the extraordinary influence of the external environment in the host organization permeates the culture and mission and strategy, weakening the role of leadership in the organization. The findings support the need for future research in the unique role of transformational …

Exploring Different Operationalizations Of Employee Engagement And Their Relationships With Workplace Stress And Burnout Among It Professionals In Community Hospitals, Paula E. Anthony-Mcmann May 2014

Exploring Different Operationalizations Of Employee Engagement And Their Relationships With Workplace Stress And Burnout Among It Professionals In Community Hospitals, Paula E. Anthony-Mcmann

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

This study suggested that the relationships between workplace stress, burnout and employee engagement depend on how the construct of employee engagement is actually measured. The study's hypotheses predicted negative relationships between employee engagement and workplace stress and further predicted that burnout would play a mediating role in those negative relationships. However, it was predicted that even similarly conceptualized measures of employee engagement would expose different relationships with these variables suggesting that the selection of employee engagement measurement instruments is vital both to understanding different aspects of the construct and to its operationalization in practice. Responding to a resurgence in scholarly …
