The COVID-19 pandemic caused a mass interruption to daily life lasting almost an entire academic year. Return to normalcy was hard won and phased over the following academic year. Neither time-period offered “traditional” learning experiences in academic institutions. The extent to which the operational shut-down affected academic institutions and their learners is just now beginning to be elucidated. Human resource development (HRD) is uniquely positioned to apply established and newly developed theories and applications to the study of this phenomenon. The Problem

Technology is creating immersive digital ecosystems that will radically transform the way humans communicate, collaborate, and create. Virtual human resource development (VHRD) is an example of this phenomenon in the field of HRD. With the emergence of VHRD, HRD scholars need to develop more robust conceptualizations of technology, and HRD practitioners need to play a larger role in technology development. Enhanced theoretical perspectives on technology are needed to support these endeavors.
