Eine jüngst von SDL, einem Anbieter von Übersetzungsdienstleistungen bzw. -software, durchgeführte Umfrage ergab ein überwiegend positives Bild der maschinellen Übersetzung bei Führungskräften: 15% der Befragten gaben an, dass ihr Unternehmen bereits maschinelle Übersetzungstechnologie einsetzt, 8 % planen den Einsatz. Weitere 30 % machen sich über den Einsatz von maschineller Übersetzung in ihrem Unternehmen Gedanken, haben sich aber noch nicht entschieden. Aus der Sicht eines seit gut einem Jahrzehnt praktizierenden Anhängers der MÜ-Bewegung sind das sehr ermutigende Zahlen.

Der automatisierte Workflow für die technische Dokumentation ist für die Wiederverwendung bestehender Übersetzungen in Translation-Memory-Systemen optimiert. Da bei der Erstübersetzung der Produktdatenbank nicht auf Bestände in einem Translation Memory zurückgegriffen werden kann, wäre das dadurch anfallende Übersetzungsvolumen für unsere internen Übersetzer schlicht überwältigend gewesen.

Direct machine translation is the least sophisticated approach to automated language processing. Unlike rules-based systems like Systran, direct machine translation systems do not perform a grammatical analysis of the source sentence. Also, direct machine translation systems have no concept of inflection. In fact, all these systems do is perform a word-for-word substitution, which is exactly what we were looking for.

This machine translation project involved post-editing (in a customized Trados environment) a typical guide section originally translated in a standard machine-translation system. This process was carefully monitored and we were able to measure how the translation productivity possible in this type of integrated machine translation environment compares to the translation productivity typical for our existing translation process. The results of this initial project are very encouraging: Our tests indicate a productivity gain of approx. 40%.

The automatic process provides translation of machine read text in one language into another language. Data can be provided by a scanner and is then handled by a text recognition program. Terms not present in the system data base are identified and sorted into an extraction list. The text is researched and classified in the target language and then used to expand the data base. Independent claims are included for a terminology listing device.
