Recently, a number of startups – like Asia Online, KantanMT, and SmartMate – have emerged that offer low-cost, subscription-based solutions for creating and using customized SMT engines. These self-service solutions allow the user to submit text for translation to an SMT engine that was customized based on translation memories, glossaries, and other materials that the user submitted. Once a custom engine is in place, which can take less than a day, the user then buys machine translation and possibly other services from the provider.

The Monterey Institute of International Studies has been using cloud-based computer-assisted translation technology in the classroom since 2008. This new approach to teaching tools-driven translation, where software no longer resides on students' or the institution's computers but on an external service providers' web-enabled servers, has been welcomed by students, the information technology department, and the Institute's administration alike. This presentation will provide a general introduction to cloud-based translation and then go on to discuss how cloud-based translation software has changed the technical, financial, and pedagogical framework of teaching computer-assisted translation courses at the Monterey Institute.

Der automatisierte Workflow für die technische Dokumentation ist für die Wiederverwendung bestehender Übersetzungen in Translation-Memory-Systemen optimiert. Da bei der Erstübersetzung der Produktdatenbank nicht auf Bestände in einem Translation Memory zurückgegriffen werden kann, wäre das dadurch anfallende Übersetzungsvolumen für unsere internen Übersetzer schlicht überwältigend gewesen.

This machine translation project involved post-editing (in a customized Trados environment) a typical guide section originally translated in a standard machine-translation system. This process was carefully monitored and we were able to measure how the translation productivity possible in this type of integrated machine translation environment compares to the translation productivity typical for our existing translation process. The results of this initial project are very encouraging: Our tests indicate a productivity gain of approx. 40%.

Mein Anliegen ist zu zeigen, dass der Einsatz von Maschinellen Übersetzungssystemen bei der Lokalisierung von Technischen Dokumenten sinnvoll und vorteilhaft sein kann, und zwar auch für kleine und mittelständische Unternehmen.
