Year-2 Progress Report On Numerical Methods For Bgk-Type Kinetic Equations, Steven M. Wise, Evan Habbershaw Jan 2024

Year-2 Progress Report On Numerical Methods For Bgk-Type Kinetic Equations, Steven M. Wise, Evan Habbershaw

Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Mathematics

In this second progress report we expand upon our previous report and preliminary work. Specifically, we review some work on the numerical solution of single- and multi-species BGK-type kinetic equations of particle transport. Such equations model the motion of fluid particles via a density field when the kinetic theory of rarefied gases must be used in place of the continuum limit Navier-Stokes and Euler equations. The BGK-type equations describe the fluid in terms of phase space variables, and, in three space dimensions, require 6 independent phase-space variables (3 for space and 3 for velocity) for each species for accurate simulation. …

Upconversion Photoluminescence Of Monolayer Wse2 With Biaxial Strain Tuning, Shrawan Roy, Jie Gao, Xiaodong Yang

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Mechanical strain can be used to tune the optical properties of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (1L-TMDs). Here, up conversion photoluminescence (UPL) from 1L-WSe2 flakes is tuned with biaxial strain induced by cruciform bending and indentation method. It is found that the peak position of UPL is redshifted by around 24 nm as the applied biaxial strain increases from 0% to 0.51%. At the same time, the UPL intensity increases exponentially for the up-conversion energy difference that lies within a broad range between −157 meV to −37 meV. The observed linear and sublinear power dependence of UPL emission in 1L-WSe …

The Right To Research As Guarantor For Sustainability, Innovation And Justice In Eu Copyright Law, Christophe Geiger, Bernd Justin Jütte

Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series

Research is essential for scientific, cultural, and social advancement and will be crucial for the economic and societal recovery in a post-pandemic world. Restrictions to access and use of information contained in copyright-protected expression however can constitute significant hindrances to conducting research efficiently, especially since modern research methods rely on accessing, storing and processing large amounts of digitized data. Over the last decade, copyright in the European Union (EU) has undergone a process of constitutionalization, which saw a growing importance of fundamental rights arguments in policy- and law-making, as well as in the jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of …

Copyright And Covid, Sean Flynn Jan 2024

Copyright And Covid, Sean Flynn

Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series

During the COVID-19 pandemic it became widely recognized that speedier access to patent rights should be enabled to speed global scale-up of vaccine production. This understanding was expressed in a proposal by India and South Africa that the World Trade Organization suspend multilateral intellectual property rules on COVID vaccines, treatment and containment. The original waiver proposal proposed a suspension of WTO rules on all forms of intellectual property needed for a broad range of COVID-19 response measures, including “vaccination,” “treatment,” and “containment.” The final “TRIPS Waiver,” however, was ultimately limited to a minor provision of TRIPS permitting greater use of …

The Role Of The Cdk8 Kinase Module In Maintaining Proteostasis, Stephen Willis Jan 2024

The Role Of The Cdk8 Kinase Module In Maintaining Proteostasis, Stephen Willis

Theses and Dissertations

The underlying etiology of numerous disease states results from perturbations in the maintenance of cellular proteostasis. Carcinogenesis relies on these perturbations to foster uncontrolled cell growth and eventual metastases, while neurodegenerative diseases are a consequence of such perturbations. Control of these processes occurs at numerous molecular levels, commonly starting with transcription. A key transcriptional complex that is involved is the CDK8 Kinase Module (CKM). The CKM is conserved from yeast to man, forming a tetrameric complex consisting of MED12, MED13, CDK8, and CCNC. The CKM has not only been implicated in a variety of cancers but also in a spectrum …

A qualitative case study explored seven counseling psychology doctoral trainees’ experiences in a small-group training with a simulated therapy client of a marginalized identity, and more specifically, the trainees’ perceptions of how the interaction with the simulated client influenced their cultural humility development. The simulation training was designed to mirror a therapy intake and the case profile reflected an African American client presenting with race-based stress from ongoing discrimination across several life domains. A thematic analysis was performed on the training de-brief focus group yielding five themes: (1) trainees’ impressions (2) trainees’ affective responses (3) comparisons to clinical work with …

Effects Of Alcohol Consumption On Gambling Warning Message Recall And Recognition, Tori Horn Jan 2024

Effects Of Alcohol Consumption On Gambling Warning Message Recall And Recognition, Tori Horn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Warning messages inform consumers of potential risks associated with product use and reduce the likelihood of excessive engagement in risky behaviors. Evidence supports that such messages can educate consumers and reduce gambling. Questions remain about how acute alcohol consumption may interfere with message reception and retention. Memory literature suggests that while alcohol consumption may not influence general message reception it may impact the recall of specific details of the messages. To examine this effect, participants (n = 82) were randomly assigned to consume alcoholic beverages (target blood alcohol concentrations of 0.06-0.08%) or juice. Participants then gambled on slot machines in …

Faculty Research 2024

For over a century, early researchers sought to study biological organisms in a laboratory setting, leading to the generation of both in vitro and in vivo model systems. Patient-derived models of cancer (PDMCs) have more recently come to the forefront of preclinical cancer models and are even finding their way into clinical practice as part of functional precision medicine programs. The PDMC Consortium, supported by the Division of Cancer Biology in the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health, seeks to understand the biological principles that govern the various PDMC behaviors, particularly in response to perturbagens, such as …

Safety And Health Management Planning For Veterinarians, Jessie Salter, Michael Pate, Kerry A. Rood

All Current Publications

Veterinary staff health and safety are of primary importance to the profession. Although this is inherently understood, oftentimes, staff safety is not given the time and resources needed to promote a safe work environment free from unnecessary risks or exposures. This handbook educates clinic leaders on valuing and creating a safety culture in practice as well as implementing appropriate safety policies and procedures. Veterinary personnel are more likely to experience a work-related injury than policemen, firefighters, and construction workers. These statistics illustrate the need for a stronger safety culture in veterinary medicine. This handbook provides an outline on how to …

Xlnet4rec: Modeling User’S Long-Term And Short-Term Interests In E-Commerce Recommender Systems, Namarta Vij Jan 2024

Xlnet4rec: Modeling User’S Long-Term And Short-Term Interests In E-Commerce Recommender Systems, Namarta Vij

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In e-commerce, a sequential recommender system is often used to predict the item that the user is likely to select next. This prediction can be used to create a recommender system to assist the user in making selections. However, when the user’s interests evolve over time, it becomes challenging to make such personalized recommendations. A more accurate recommender system thus needs to effectively interpret and adapt to a user’s changing interests by considering user’s long-term and short-term interests. Many attention-based methods focus on a user’s last clicked item to learn short-term interests. However, this approach may not consistently represent the …

Applying Functional Data Analysis To Estimate The Mental Workload Of The Human Driver, David Olorunfemi Eniyandunmo Jan 2024

Applying Functional Data Analysis To Estimate The Mental Workload Of The Human Driver, David Olorunfemi Eniyandunmo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent studies have focused on accurately estimating mental workload using machine learning algorithms and extracting features from psycho-physiological measures. However, feature extraction leads to the loss of valuable information and often results in binary classifications that lack specificity in the identification of optimum mental workload levels. This study investigates the feasibility of using raw psycho-physiological data (EEG, facial EMG, ECG, EDA, pupillometry) combined with Functional Data Analysis (FDA) to estimate mental workload of human drivers. A driving scenario with five tasks was employed, and subjective ratings were collected using the modified Bedford workload scale. Results demonstrate that the FDA applied …

The hippocampus is pivotal in integrating emotional processing, learning, memory, and reward-related behaviors. The dorsal hippocampus (dHPC) is particularly crucial for episodic, spatial, and associative memory, and has been shown to be necessary for context- and cue-associated reward behaviors. The nucleus accumbens (NAc), a central structure in the mesolimbic reward pathway, integrates the salience of aversive and rewarding stimuli. Despite extensive research on dHPC→NAc direct projections, their sufficiency in driving reinforcement and reward-related behavior remains to be determined. Our study establishes that activating excitatory neurons in the dHPC is sufficient to induce reinforcing behaviors through its direct projections to the …

The association between anemia and outcomes in glioblastoma patients is unclear. We analyzed data from 1346 histologically confirmed adult glioblastoma patients in the TriNetX Research Network. Median hemoglobin and hematocrit levels were quantified for 6 months following diagnosis and used to classify patients as anemic or non-anemic. Associations of anemia and iron supplementation of anemic patients with median overall survival (median-OS) were then studied. Among 1346 glioblastoma patients, 35.9% of male and 40.5% of female patients were classified as anemic using hemoglobin-based WHO guidelines. Among males, anemia was associated with reduced median-OS compared to matched non-anemic males using hemoglobin (HR …

Journal Articles

Therapies to revascularize ischemic tissue have long been a goal for the treatment of vascular disease and other disorders. Therapies using stem cell factor (SCF), also known as a c-Kit ligand, had great promise for treating ischemia for myocardial infarct and stroke, however clinical development for SCF was stopped due to toxic side effects including mast cell activation in patients. We recently developed a novel therapy using a transmembrane form of SCF (tmSCF) delivered in lipid nanodiscs. In previous studies, we demonstrated tmSCF nanodiscs were able to induce revascularization of ischemia limbs in mice and did not activate mast cells. …
