A Comparison Of Auctions And Multilateral Negotiations, Bart Wilson, Charles Thomas Aug 2014

A Comparison Of Auctions And Multilateral Negotiations, Bart Wilson, Charles Thomas

Bart J Wilson

We compare first-price auctions to an exchange process that we term 'multilateral negotiations.' In multilateral negotiations, a buyer solicits price offers for a homogeneous product from sellers with privately known costs, and then plays the sellers off one another to obtain additional price concessions. Using the experimental method, we find that with four sellers, transaction prices are statistically indistinguishable in the two institutions, but with two sellers, prices are higher in multilateral negotiations than in first-price auctions. The institutions are equally efficient with two sellers, but multilateral negotiations are slightly more efficient with four sellers.

Collusive Bidding In The Fcc Spectrum Auctions, Peter Cramton, Jesse Schwartz May 2014

Collusive Bidding In The Fcc Spectrum Auctions, Peter Cramton, Jesse Schwartz

Jesse A. Schwartz

This paper describes the bid signaling that occurred in many of the FCC spectrum auctions. Bidders in these auctions bid on numerous spectrum licenses simultaneously, with bidding remaining open on all licenses until no bidder is willing to raise the bid on any license. Simultaneous open bidding allows bidders to send messages to their rivals, telling them on which licenses to bid and which to avoid. This “code bidding” occurs when one bidder tags the last few digits of its bid with the market number of a related license. We examine how extensively bidders signaled each other with retaliating bids …

It Works For Me, Too! More Shared Tips For Effective Teaching, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe Nov 2011

It Works For Me, Too! More Shared Tips For Effective Teaching, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Hal Blythe

In the four years since our first book on teaching, we have noticed both on our campus and around the country a new emphasis on the instructor as teacher (vs. scholar). We have read books on the subject, attended the prestigious Lilly Conference, helped establish a Teaching & Learning Center on our campus (Hal served as its first director), and written for new journals focusing on pedagogy. It Works For Me, Too! is our contribution to the Renaissance in College Pedagogy, our attempt to fuel this brightening interest in effective teaching. Like its predecessor, this book is a compilation of …

Drawing On Memory: A Technique For Making Short Fiction Come Alive, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Hal Blythe

Considers how to get today's schoolchild and college student to move from the words to the picture, then back again. Explores the teaching technique of having students draw what the piece of literature describes. Finds that drawing the visual image provides a much better chance of understanding a work's significance. Describes how to apply this idea with a homework assignment.

Evaluating The Work Of Teachers In Australian Schools : Vision And Reality, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Lawrence Ingvarson, Rod Chadbourne Apr 2010

Evaluating The Work Of Teachers In Australian Schools : Vision And Reality, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Lawrence Ingvarson, Rod Chadbourne

Dr Elizabeth Kleinhenz

Given the importance of effective teacher evaluation to successful teaching and learning, it is surprising that many of the research findings in this area are being ignored. Discredited procedures continue to survive and are even born again within reinvented systems of bureaucratic and managerial control This paper argues for an approach to teacher evaluation that reflects the findings of contemporary research. It falls into three parts. The first part reviews the relevant literature and distills some features and principles that underpin successful policy and practice. The second part describes a case study that was part of a research project, begun …

The Post-Graduate Research Experience Questionnaire enables graduates to express their degree of agreement or disagreement on the following facets of their courses : quality of supervision; intellectual climate of the department in which the respondent was based; development of skills; quality of the infrastructure provided by the university; the thesis examination process; and the clarity of goals and expectations.

Identifying The Resource And Service Needs Of Graduate And Professional Students: The University Of Iowa User Needs Of Graduate Professional Series, Carlette Washington-Hoagland, Leo Clougherty, Dorothy Persson, Hope Barton, Jim Cheng, John Forys, Christine Walters Feb 2009

Identifying The Resource And Service Needs Of Graduate And Professional Students: The University Of Iowa User Needs Of Graduate Professional Series, Carlette Washington-Hoagland, Leo Clougherty, Dorothy Persson, Hope Barton, Jim Cheng, John Forys, Christine Walters

Dorothy M Persson

The library profession has a vested interest in the retention and information literacy of graduate and professional students. Recent research highlights the need for the overall study of graduate student use of the library and of those services and resources geared toward that population. A University of Iowa Libraries' user needs assessment survey of a random sample of graduate and professional students revealed that although graduate and professional students come to the library to do research or to use other library resources, fewer come to study or borrow books. Graduate and professional students recognize the need for more assistance in …
