Astronomy Matters For Chemistry Teachers, Terry Smith, Jay Huebner, Robert Vergenz Jul 2014

Astronomy Matters For Chemistry Teachers, Terry Smith, Jay Huebner, Robert Vergenz

Jay S Huebner

The purpose of this paper is to encourage more chemistry teachers to become familiar with some of the basic ideas described in typical introductory astronomy courses (1 - 9), including those about the origin of elements and forms of matter. These ideas would enrich chemistry courses and help resolve some basic misconceptions that are expressed in many introductory texts (10 - 16) and journal articles for chemistry teachers (17, 18). These misconceptions are typified by statements such as "we can classify all substances as either elements or compounds," and "nature has provided 92 elements out of which all matter is …

A Variational Inequality Approach For Marketable Pollution Permits, Anna Nagurney, Kathy Dhanda Sep 2012

A Variational Inequality Approach For Marketable Pollution Permits, Anna Nagurney, Kathy Dhanda

Kathy K Dhanda

In this paper, we present a variational inequality framework for the modeling, qualitative analysis, and computation of equilibria in markets in pollution permits. The models developed herein allow for different modes of competitive behavior, including oligopolistic behavior, while taking into account the cost of polluting plus the prices of the licenses to pollute at different receptor points. The models deal explicitly with spatial differentiation and also ensure that the imposed environmental quality standards are met through the initial allocation of licenses. An algorithm is proposed, along with convergence results, to compute the profit-maximized quantities of the firms' products and quantities …

The Mayer Key Competencies And Arts Education, Jennifer Bryce, Adrian Beavis, Joan Livermore, John O'Toole Feb 2010

The Mayer Key Competencies And Arts Education, Jennifer Bryce, Adrian Beavis, Joan Livermore, John O'Toole

Dr Jennifer Bryce

This report Is the major outcome of the project Evaluating the Key Competencies In the Arts conducted by the National Affiliation of Arts Educators (NAAE) and the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) on behalf of the Commonwealth Department of Employment and Education, Training and Youth Affairs (DEETYA). The report uses the voices of arts teachers to show how the key competencies may have a generic function across the five arts areas and to explain how the construct of 'competency' makes sense In the arts field.

Aviation English: An Introduction, Peter H. Ragan Dec 1996

Aviation English: An Introduction, Peter H. Ragan

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Aviation is a specialized, technology-based area that covers a broad range of activities, from esoteric analyses of compressible fluids, to selling tickets, to getting a clearance for takeoff. Accordingly, the language behavior inherent to such activities is diverse, often requiring specialized uses of English that are collectively labeled here as Aviation English. Aviation English figures prominently in most fields of aviation/aerospace education and practice, in regulatory and administrative agencies concerned with national and international commerce, norms and standards, and in academic, industrial, and government research and development. A greater awareness of the nature of Aviation English and of relevant resources …

Expression Of Human Protein C In Mammary Tissue Of Transgenic Mammals , William H. Velander Dec 1996

Expression Of Human Protein C In Mammary Tissue Of Transgenic Mammals , William H. Velander

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Patents

Recombinant protein C characterized by a high percentage of active protein can be obtained in the milk of transgenic mammals that incorporate DNAs according to the present invention. Transgenic mammals of the present invention are produced by introducing into developing embryos DNA that encodes protein C, such that the DNA is stably incorporated in the DNA of germ line cells of the mature mammals and inherited in normal, mendelian fashion.

A Study Of The Influence Of C. F. W. Walther On The Norwegian Synod, Michael Dorner Dec 1996

A Study Of The Influence Of C. F. W. Walther On The Norwegian Synod, Michael Dorner

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

This paper will look at some of the interpretations of Walther's influence and also the strength of confessional Lutheranism among Norwegian-Americans during four periods: the time until 1860, the period during the slavery issue, the period during the election controversy and the period after Walther's death.1

Jerome On Virginity: An Analysis Of St. Jerome's Position On Consecrated Virginity And Celibacy And Their Relation To Marriage, Daniel Kempin Dec 1996

Jerome On Virginity: An Analysis Of St. Jerome's Position On Consecrated Virginity And Celibacy And Their Relation To Marriage, Daniel Kempin

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

How and why Jerome came to be a champion of this cause is a story in itself, and his own accounts of his personal experience are often emotional and dramatic. Of greater significance, however, is the theological legacy to which Jerome contributed by his strong emphasis on Christian celibacy, particularly consecrated virginity. In this paper I will investigate Jerome's position on Christian celibacy and virginity, including the influences that contributed to his position, in order to identify the theological implications that were a part of his position, and to discuss briefly the exegesis with which he supported his position.

Correlated Confocal And Intermediate Voltage Electron Microscopy Imaging Of The Same Cells Using Sequential Fluorescence Labeling, Fixation, And Critical Point Dehydration, Lee D. Peachey, Harunori Ishikawa, Tohru Murakami Dec 1996

Correlated Confocal And Intermediate Voltage Electron Microscopy Imaging Of The Same Cells Using Sequential Fluorescence Labeling, Fixation, And Critical Point Dehydration, Lee D. Peachey, Harunori Ishikawa, Tohru Murakami

Scanning Microscopy

Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and intermediate voltage transmission electron microscopy (IVEM) each has its own particular advantages. CLSM can examine living cells, but is particularly useful when applied to cells that have been lightly fixed, permeabilized, and stained with fluorescent-labeled antibodies for localization of specific molecular species at the resolution of the light microscope while still in the hydrated state. IVEM provides much higher resolution images, but requires more drastic preparation procedures, including dehydration. This paper presents methods for combining these complementary approaches to examine exactly the same cells sequentially by CLSM and IVEM. Cells are grown in culture …

Immunocytochemistry By Electron Spectroscopic Imaging Using Well Defined Boronated Monovalent Antibody Fragments, M. M. Kessels, B. Qualmann, W. D. Sierralta Dec 1996

Immunocytochemistry By Electron Spectroscopic Imaging Using Well Defined Boronated Monovalent Antibody Fragments, M. M. Kessels, B. Qualmann, W. D. Sierralta

Scanning Microscopy

Contributing to the rapidly developing field of immunoelectron microscopy a new kind of markers has been created. The element boron, incorporated as very stable carborane clusters into different kinds of peptides, served as a marker detectable by electron spectroscopic imaging (ESI) - an electron microscopic technique with high-resolution potential.

Covalently linked immunoreagents conspicuous by the small size of both antigen recognizing part and marker moiety are accessible by using peptide concepts for label construction and their conjugation with Fab' fragments. Due to a specific labeling of the free thiol groups of the Fab' fragments, the antigen binding capacity was not …
