Relationships Between The Groundwaters Of Ash Meadows, Death Valley, Pahranagat Valley And The Nevada Test Site Based On Statistical Analysis And Modeling Of Trace Element Data, Sara Michelle Cox

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Relationships between the groundwaters of the Nevada Test Site, Ash Meadows, Pahranagat, and Death Valley have been studied by many people over many years. Using hydrogeochemical data from these areas (sampled and analyzed by the Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies) hydrologic subbasins were classified on the basis of trace element concentrations and compare these to previous classification systems. In addition, previously suggested flow relationships were examined on the basis of trace element concentrations, in particular those elements which are thought to behave conservatively in oxidizing environments. These efforts were made with the aid of statistical analyses such as principal …

Life History And Population Dynamics Of Daphnia In Seven Ephemeral Pools In Red Rock Canyon, Nevada, Priscilla Kathleen Bowman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Seven ephemeral rock pools in Red Rock Canyon, Nevada were visited bimonthly over twelve months and sampled for resident zooplankton species. Population dynamics and life history characteristics of two Daphnia species, D. pulex and D. obtusa were analyzed with incidental attention given to an additional cladoceran, Moina sp. Aspects of the physical, chemical and biological environment were measured and evaluated. The behavior of these daphnid populations appears to be driven by the extreme seasonality of rock pool ecosystems between episodic disturbances of drought and deluge. No causal relationships between Daphnia population size or patterns of temporal change and abiotic factors …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The F98 rat glioma cell line, a model for human malignant glioma, was used to investigate the efficacy of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) under varying light irradiation conditions. Cells in monolayer were pre-incubated in ALA for 4 hours prior to 635 nm light exposure. Using clonogenic survival assays, it was found that F98 glioma cells were sensitive to ALA-PDT: survival was inversely proportional to light fluence. As evidenced from the LD50 (4 J cm-2 at a fluence rate of 35 mW cm-2), ALA-PDT was found to be more effective in F98 cells compared to that found in another …

Post-Modification Of Polysulfone Using Transition Metal Catalyzed C-H Activation And Suzuki-Miyaura Cross Coupling Reaction, Se Hye Kim Jan 2008

Post-Modification Of Polysulfone Using Transition Metal Catalyzed C-H Activation And Suzuki-Miyaura Cross Coupling Reaction, Se Hye Kim

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Polysulfone is a widely used high-performance engineering plastic because of its good mechanical and chemical stabilities. Even though polysulfone has excellent overall properties, the hydrophobic nature of the polymer precludes its broader use in membrane application where hydrophilic character is desired. Until now four post-modification methods of polysulfone have been reported: electrophilic sulfonation, chloromethylation, phthalimidomethylation, and lithiation with n-butyl lithium. However, all these methods suffer serious side reactions, such as chain cleavage and crosslinking of polymer chains, which can alter mechanical properties of the resulting polymer. We have developed a new post-functionalization method of polysulfone that utilizes transition metal catalyzed …

Neutron Cross-Section Sensitivity Studies In Higher Actinides For Criticality Safety In Reprocessing, Lawrence J Lakeotes

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

During reprocessing, the spent fuel rod can be divided up into its component parts for separation into different waste streams. These radioactive streams are then directed appropriately toward low-level waste (LLW) storage, high-level waste (HLW) storage, or reuse into a recycled fuel pin. [1]; The issue that requires evaluation is the nuclear reaction of the higher actinides in reprocessing in an aqueous solution with regard to small temperature changes. This will need an analysis of neutron cross section, which is the measure of the probability that a nuclear reaction will occur; The isotopes' cross sections need to be temperature corrected. …

The Lost Promise Of Heaven: An Examination Of Gender In Children's Literature, 1790--1830, Ea Nicole Madrigal Jan 2008

The Lost Promise Of Heaven: An Examination Of Gender In Children's Literature, 1790--1830, Ea Nicole Madrigal

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The United States republic can be defined by its cultural, social, and political change. Historians like Linda Kerber contend that this moment magnified gender difference. This was in fact a time that gender expectations were further defined. However, representations of gender in children's literature indicate that although some stories illustrated different roles and expectations for male and female readers, there were other stories that emphasized similarities between all children; Analogous to Susan Juster's findings from this period that men and women described religious conversion experiences similarly, religious children's literature detailed the spiritual commonalities of boys and girls. Gender was insignificant …

An Alternative Study Of Chinese History: Two Daoist Temples, Joan Lorraine Mann Jan 2008

An Alternative Study Of Chinese History: Two Daoist Temples, Joan Lorraine Mann

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Daoist temple is a largely overlooked feature in the study of the history of China. The temple has been an important component of Chinese history since the Zhou dynasty, beginning in the Spring and Autumn period and continuing into the Warring States period.1 It is Daoism that made immortals of mortal Chinese war heroes, emperors, leaders, and ancestors. It is these celestials and immortals, found only in a Chinese Daoist temple that can so successfully relate the history of the common man in China. The Chinese have venerated these Daoist celestials and immortals to the status of "gods," and …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The self-assembly of pi-conjugated materials into one-dimensional (1-D) nanostructures via intermolecular pi-electron overlap is of particular interest for optoelectronic device miniaturization. There have been a number of pi-conjugated organic semiconductors reported with the ability to self-assemble to produce nanofibers, nanobelts, and nanotubes. However, the majority of these molecules are electron-rich (p-type) and thus the demand for electron-deficient (n-type) semiconductors is high since the availability of useful n-type semiconductors is limited; The design strategy and synthetic routes for novel n-type organic semiconductors based on bisphenazine are reported. The thermal, optical, and electrochemical properties studied by DSC, UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy, and …

Direct Democracy And State Legislatures: Does Professionalism Matter?, Donald D Mirjanian

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis seeks to improve our understanding of the relationship between state legislative professionalism and direct democracy. Using institutionalist theory as a framework, I employ negative binomial regression to measure frequency changes in statewide ballot initiatives (1990-2000) as a function of state legislative professionalism. I find that increased professionalism is associated with higher levels of ballot initiatives appearing on statewide ballots, after controlling for qualification difficulty, interest group strength, divided government, and demographic variables. While the conclusions may not provide insight as to the long-term (or short-term, for that matter) quality of the initiatives or referenda, they do provide insight …

An Implementation Of Active Objects In Java, George Oprean Jan 2008

An Implementation Of Active Objects In Java, George Oprean

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Active objects are a form of multitasking for computer systems. Active objects manipulate their own execution thread instead of using the execution thread of the object that created them. When a method is invoked on an active object, the call returns immediately and the caller continues execution. Thus, active objects can be utilized to develop parallel applications; Active object model can be implemented in a number of different ways: with patterns, external libraries or extending the language. The solution proposed by this thesis is to implement active objects by extending the Java language with new keywords. We have modified Sun's …

Using Mortality Salience To Increase Procedural Fairness In The Penalty Phase Of Capital Trials, Jared A Shoemaker Jan 2008

Using Mortality Salience To Increase Procedural Fairness In The Penalty Phase Of Capital Trials, Jared A Shoemaker

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Previous research suggests that jurors are more likely to emphasize aggravating circumstances and disregard mitigating circumstances during the sentencing phase of capital cases. This is not only contrary to the ideals of procedural fairness espoused in most death penalty statutes, but it also increases a capital defendant's likelihood of receiving the death penalty; The current study explores whether mortality salience and worldview defense, key components of terror management theory, can increase procedural fairness in capital cases by increasing jurors' attention to mitigating circumstances. This is achieved through a factorial-design jury simulation in which mock jurors are exposed to varying levels …
