The Effect Of Movement Velocity And Eccentric Contractions On The Bilateral Deficit, D. Clark Dickin Sep 2005

The Effect Of Movement Velocity And Eccentric Contractions On The Bilateral Deficit, D. Clark Dickin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study was performed to examine the effects of movement velocity and eccentric contractions on the bilateral deficit. To accomplish this, 18 participants performed bilateral and unilateral contractions eccentrically and concentrically across 6 movement velocities (30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}/s). Repeated measures ANOVA's revealed that for both eccentric and concentric contractions, significant differences existed between bilateral and summed unilateral contractions; and at each of the six tested velocities. Further analyses revealed that the degree of the bilateral deficit increased as movement velocity increased. It is believed that the decreased tension developed during bilateral eccentric and concentric contractions, is …

Process Analysis And Simulation Of Solar Thermochemical Hydrogen Generation, Mohammad Arif Khan Jan 2005

Process Analysis And Simulation Of Solar Thermochemical Hydrogen Generation, Mohammad Arif Khan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this study three different kind of solar thermochemical cycles (methane reforming process, sulfur-iodine cycle and copper-chlorine cycle) have been analyzed to produce hydrogen gas. Methane reforming processes (steam methane reforming, partial oxidation and autothermal reforming) have been analyzed and simulation flowsheets have been developed. In this analysis, the temperature of all the reforming reactors are varied in the range of 500-1000 °C due to the transient nature of the solar energy. The results show that the POX reforming system is better than the other two systems for the production of the same amount of hydrogen from CH4; Process analysis …

The Silver Spring And Blackrock Faults, East-Central Nevada: Kinematics, Timing, And Role Of Low-Angle Normal Faulting In The Development Of Railroad Valley, Tyler R Knudsen Jan 2005

The Silver Spring And Blackrock Faults, East-Central Nevada: Kinematics, Timing, And Role Of Low-Angle Normal Faulting In The Development Of Railroad Valley, Tyler R Knudsen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The structural development of Railroad Valley, a large and economically important Tertiary basin in east-central Nevada, has been the focus of much debate. This study addresses many of the points of controversy through a detailed geologic study of structures in the southwestern White Pine Range; Detailed geologic mapping and construction of cross-sections reveal both low- and high-angle normal faults. The low-angle faults consist of three bedding-parallel faults, two top-to-the-southwest and one top-to-the-south, and two large displacement (>8 km heave) (26,000 ft) top-to-the-west detachments that denude a range-scale Mesozoic fold. Two spatially distinct groups of high-angle normal faults are present: …

Bayesian Estimation Of The Normal Mean In The Presence Of Non-Detects, Ahmed Khago Jan 2005

Bayesian Estimation Of The Normal Mean In The Presence Of Non-Detects, Ahmed Khago

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This paper is concerned with the Bayesian approach to estimate the mean when encountered with left-censored data sets. Considering the joint non-informative prior, we derived the posterior probability density function of the mean of left-censored data. However, this density function is not recognizable and we can not analytically integrate it to obtain the normalizing constant. In other words, we can not compute analytically the posterior pdf or posterior moments. Numerical integration involving the adaptive Simpson quadrature rule was used in Mat-lab to obtain the posterior mean and the upper credible limit (UCL). Several numerical examples are given which illustrate the …

Synthesizing A Piccolo Using Physical Modeling Techniques, Pamela Pnina Mandelbaum Jan 2005

Synthesizing A Piccolo Using Physical Modeling Techniques, Pamela Pnina Mandelbaum

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Physical modeling is a very affective technique used to simulate a musical instrument. It is different than most synthesizing techniques, because the synthesized sound is completely computer generated. It works by starting with a pure frequency and then applying a physical model to this signal. The physical model is created by analyzing the effects that the real instrument would have on a pure signal and then designing a model to simulate these effects using signal processing techniques; The piccolo is an instrument similar to the flute. Music synthesizers will use synthesized flute sounds for music that requires a synthesized piccolo. …

Penny Stinkards And Proper Gentlemen: The Demographics Of London's Theatre Audiences, 1567--1642, Brook Adelaide Mcginnis Jan 2005

Penny Stinkards And Proper Gentlemen: The Demographics Of London's Theatre Audiences, 1567--1642, Brook Adelaide Mcginnis

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Knowing one's audience is crucial to any theatre. How can the marketing staff target new patrons if they know nothing about their immediate audience? This quandary need not be limited to the present. Therefore, the thesis I propose is entitled "Penny Stinkards And Proper Gentlemen: The Demographics of London's Theatre Audiences 1567-1642." I have researched the different facets of Elizabethan life that may have played a factor in attendance. Rather than discussing whom Middleton, Kyd, and Shakespeare were writing for, I have discussed who may have actually attended. Whom one writes for and who ends up in the audience are …

The Changing Dynamics Of Coattails In Senate Elections, Sheila Dubron Lambert Jan 2005

The Changing Dynamics Of Coattails In Senate Elections, Sheila Dubron Lambert

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The prevailing theoretical approach in political science has been to analyze presidential coattails from a top down perspective focusing on the effect that presidential elections have on congressional outcomes. Presidential coattail research has been limited in scope to coattails as a one-way causation often examining variables in isolation, rarely accounting for the complex nature of elections and competing forces that influence elections across various levels of campaigns. This research seeks to present a more realistic view of campaign processes by assessing the spillover effects that campaign activity for one race may have on other races occurring simultaneously. Specifically, this thesis …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Symptoms associated with the development and maintenance of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) were examined in a diverse group of maltreated adolescents. The first hypothesis was that levels of PTSD symptomatology, depression, dissociation, anger, and maladaptive cognitions were expected to significantly differ among African-American, Caucasian, Hispanic, and Multiracial adolescents. The second hypothesis was that ethnicity was expected to significantly moderate a relationship between (1) severity of PTSD as measured by symptomatology, and (2) the expression of related symptoms (i.e., depression, dissociation, anger, and maladaptive cognitions). Regarding hypothesis one, African-Americans reported less depressive symptoms overall than other ethnic groups, with Caucasians and …

Gravel Ghosts: Selected Poems, Megan Ann Merchant Jan 2005

Gravel Ghosts: Selected Poems, Megan Ann Merchant

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In his collection of poetry and prose Spring and All, William Carlos Williams said, "the reader knows himself as he was twenty years ago and he has also in mind a vision of what he would be someday. Oh some day! But the thing he never knows and never dares to know is what he is at the exact moment that he is. And this moment is the only thing in which I am at all interested" (88-89). That moment is the landscape for my collected works, Gravel Ghosts. The flower itself is a great representation of the desired moment …

Gothic Analogues In Kay Boyle's Death Of A Man: Modernist Perspective And Political Reality, Cara A Minardi Jan 2005

Gothic Analogues In Kay Boyle's Death Of A Man: Modernist Perspective And Political Reality, Cara A Minardi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In order to flesh out obscured meanings of Death of a Man, one must understand the political and social milieu between 1917-1936 in America and Europe. Incorporating a new historicist approach, this paper considers the social and political warnings contained in Boyle's Death of a Man. That American critics rejected Boyle's novel is evidence of American biases toward Europe during a period of American isolationism. The novel itself confronts European attitudes that in many cases were the result of The Treaty of Versailles and that led to World War II. Viewing Boyle's novel as a piece of Gothic writing overlaid …

Generating Quality Dominating Set, Khursheed Mohammed Jan 2005

Generating Quality Dominating Set, Khursheed Mohammed

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Construction of a small size dominating set is a well known problem in graph theory and sensor networks. A Connected dominating set (CDS) can be used as a backbone structure in sensor networks for message delivery and broadcast. The general dominating set problem is known to be NP-hard and some approximation algorithms have been proposed; In most approximation algorithms for constructing connected dominating set only the size of the dominating set has been considered. In this thesis we address the problem of constructing connected dominating sets with several quality factors that include (i) diameter, (ii) risk-factor, and (iii) interference. We …

Policy Analysis: Evaluating Theories Of The Hermeneutic Critique, Cecilea Mun Jan 2005

Policy Analysis: Evaluating Theories Of The Hermeneutic Critique, Cecilea Mun

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis evaluates three theories representing the three perspectives identified by Goktug Morcol as perspectives of the hermeneutic critique in policy analysis, while explicating the revolutionary process that the science is currently undergoing. The evaluation is focused around the question as to whether the three theories are viable alternatives to positivist theories. First, a brief history of policy analysis is presented, highlighting the conditions that contributed to the rise of the general positivist paradigm as the ideal in policy analysis. This is followed by a summary and criticisms of the general positivist paradigm. Next, summaries of Dvora Yanow's interpretive theory, …

Handwritten Number Recognition, Meenakshisundaram Murugan Jan 2005

Handwritten Number Recognition, Meenakshisundaram Murugan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The main focus of this research is to automate medical form processing. An important step in this process is separating handwriting from printed text characters. We developed a filtering technique that extracts handwritten text from the printed text in the form. Once the handwritten text is segregated, each line of the segregated text is identified. The identification step is followed by character segmentation. Statistical analysis is performed on the gaps between the characters in each line. This results in a binormal curve clearly depicting two regions indicating if the gap represents the spacing between characters within a word or between …

Urvashi: A Novel, Dave Anish Mukundbhai Jan 2005

Urvashi: A Novel, Dave Anish Mukundbhai

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

"Urvashi" is based on the universal theme of an obsessive love of a young man for a young woman. It's a story that's repeated in every age and culture, in the lives of countless young men and women. Porus Chaturvedi, a young "upper-caste" corporate executive in India, decides to pursue, as his "perfect match," a "lower-caste" girl (named Urvashi) not yet out of high school. Complicating this "love affair" are Porus's endless, bookish attempts to theorize life; his recruitment of a disparate band of sympathizers to act as "go betweens" and to help him "strategize"; his erotic fantasies followed by …

Joint Design For Shock Mitigation, Gopi Nallani Jan 2005

Joint Design For Shock Mitigation, Gopi Nallani

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Smart projectiles carry various electronic components that can be damaged by severe shock loads. Propagation of shock from the region of initial loading to the locations of critical components can result in their failure. The objective of the research is to mitigate (absorb/reflect/disrupt, etc.) the incident shock loading, including simulating set-back, set-forward and balloting loads on a projectile as it exits the gun muzzle and predicting the structural response of internal electronic components. A detailed finite element analysis of the projectile and internal components is presented. The effect of electronic component mounting location on peak acceleration and RMS acceleration has …

Political Factionalism Among The Mojave Indians, 1826--1875, Melinda A Oesterman Jan 2005

Political Factionalism Among The Mojave Indians, 1826--1875, Melinda A Oesterman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Fort Mojave Indians of California and Mohave Indians of Arizona were once united on their aboriginal territory. Their lifestyle was impacted by interaction with the Spanish, fur trappers, military explorers and emigrant parties; Spanish interaction with the Mojave in the 1600s resulted in little change. The fur trappers of the 1820s generally lacked cultural awareness and respect of Mojave resources. Military expeditions along the 35th parallel into Mojave territory were generally well received and aided by some Mojave, while other Mojave were cautious of the "foreign invaders." Emigrant parties soon followed, causing alarm among the Mojave as they believed …

Virtual Design And Modeling Of Various Manufacturing Processes For Remote Fabrication Of Transmuter Fuel, Jamil Mohamad Renno Jan 2005

Virtual Design And Modeling Of Various Manufacturing Processes For Remote Fabrication Of Transmuter Fuel, Jamil Mohamad Renno

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

As currently envisioned, over 70,000 tons of high-level nuclear waste would be stored inside the planned Yucca Mountain repository. After emplacement, the site must be maintained and guarded for over 10,000 years; The reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel is a possible alternative to geological storage. Here, depleted Uranium would be separated from Plutonium and Minor Actinides. While Plutonium can be 'burned' in commercial nuclear reactors, the minor actinides would be transmuted into other elements. The large-scale deployment of remote fabrication and refabrication processes (approx. 100 tons of Minor Actinides (MA) annually) will be required. Process automation has the potential to …
