Sharing Memory In Distributed Systems, Oscar Rodrigo Aguilar Jan 1990

Sharing Memory In Distributed Systems, Oscar Rodrigo Aguilar

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

We propose an algorithm for simulating atomic registers, test-and-set, fetch-and-add, and read-modify-write registers in a message passing system. The algorithm is fault tolerant and works correctly in presence of up to (N/2) -1 node failures where N is the number of processors in the system. The high resilience of the algorithm is obtained by using randomized consensus algorithms and a robust communication primitive. The use of this primitive allows a processor to exchange local information with a majority of processors in a consistent way, and therefore to take decisions safely. The simulator makes it possible to translate algorithms for the …

Measurement Of Thermal Energy Charge Transfer Rate Of Multiply Charged Molybdenum (Molybdenum(6+)) And Argon, Ying Jiang

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

We have made the first measurement of the thermal energy charge transfer rate of Mo{dollar}\sp{6+}{dollar} and neutral argon. This measurement was carried out using a technique that combines the production of ions by laser ablation and an ion trap. The multiply charged ions produced by laser ablation are cooled by crossed beams collision. These ions are stored in a radio-frequency ion trap. The charge transfer rate is determined by measuring the rate of loss of stored ions in the trap. The charge transfer rate coefficient, k, of Mo{dollar}\sp{6+}{dollar} and Ar is 1.02(.10) {dollar}\times{dollar} 10{dollar}\sp{-10}{dollar}cm{dollar}\sp3{dollar}s{dollar}\sp{-1}{dollar}. The estimated uncertainty is {dollar}\pm{dollar}10% and …

A Computerized Analysis Of Anterior Teeth As A Possible Indicator Of Age, Race And Sex, Jay A Johnson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Various systems of anthropometry have been developed through the years in an attempt to elucidate important characteristics of the human dentition. Few methods are currently relied upon as valuable indicators of age, race or sex; The computerized study of anterior tooth positions is an attempt at further elucidation of age, race and sex characteristics. Bite marks in wax from a general population sample of known age, race and sex are the basis for this computerized study. The computerized procedure allows for the examination of minute variation in tooth position. Twelve teeth in total are analyzed for every specimen.

Novel Techniques For Molecular Ion Spectroscopy In A Discharge, Guang Lan Jan 1990

Novel Techniques For Molecular Ion Spectroscopy In A Discharge, Guang Lan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Velocity modulation laser spectroscopy has proven to be a successful spectroscopic technique for the study of molecular ions; indeed, it has become the conventional technique. However, there are a number of limitations to velocity modulation in its conventional form. First, there is a background arising from r.f. pick-up or optical emission. Because the background is at the same frequency as the desired signals, the background is hard to eliminate. Fluctuations in the background level can make it difficult to detect signals. Second, in many experiments the dominant source of noise is the detector, and sensitive detectors are often inconveniently slow. …

The data structure used by this algorithm is described in detail here; Intersection points are connected by examining the orientation of the corresponding face used to represent that patch of the estimated surface. The total number of intersections with a contour plane in a cell and the presence of horizontal lines in a …

Rapid Serial Visual Presentation And The Leading Format: A Comparison Study, Christopher William Schacherer Jan 1990

Rapid Serial Visual Presentation And The Leading Format: A Comparison Study, Christopher William Schacherer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Recently, investigators interested in the most efficient means by which to present text on computer screens have directed their efforts, largely, toward optimizing the rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) display format. This research has led to the discovery, for example, that overlapping information across segments interferes with comprehension. The present study further investigates this issue by comparing RSVP to another frequently used text display format, the leading format. The leading format differs from RSVP with overlapping information in that it does not discriminate between text segments that end with words being truncated and those that do not. The results of …

A Phenomenological Criticism: A Phenomenologically Based Methodology For Analyzing Theatrical Works, Roberta Sterman Sabbath Jan 1990

A Phenomenological Criticism: A Phenomenologically Based Methodology For Analyzing Theatrical Works, Roberta Sterman Sabbath

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The thesis, using Husserlian phenomenology, presents a descriptive, analytical approach for theatrical works. The methodology consists of two parts: "feeling" and "meaning." "Feeling" covers the reader/viewer's experience of the work; "meaning" covers the source of that experience in the work. An introductory portion asks the analyzer to describe the autonomous aspects of the work. The evaluative conclusion asks the reader/viewer to describe change or lack thereof in the personal perspective; Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs, Edith Stein's treatment of empathy, and Ernst Cassirer's paradigms of cultural expression are all used to enrich the analytical approach. Two plays, Caryl Churchill and …

Constitutional Privacy: The Evolution Of A Doctrine, Helena Ann Mandarino Jan 1990

Constitutional Privacy: The Evolution Of A Doctrine, Helena Ann Mandarino

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Although the right to privacy is not actually enumerated in the Constitution, over a century of common law precedent and judicial interpretation has authorized certain personal activities as being outside the scope of governmental regulation. The constitutional defense of such freedoms have been regarded as Fourteenth Amendment due process guarantees to life, liberty, and property. In Griswold v. Connecticut, the Supreme Court ruled that proscribing the use of contraceptives to married couples was unduly burdensome. Judicial acknowledgment of the right to privacy invited further challenges which involved intensely personal situations and choices, the most controversial of which is the right …

Computation In Director String Calculus, Vugranam Chakravarthy Sreedhar Jan 1990

Computation In Director String Calculus, Vugranam Chakravarthy Sreedhar

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis we introduce a modified version of Director String Calculus (MDSC) which preserves the applicative structure of the original lambda terms and captures the strong reduction as opposed to weak reduction of the original Director String Calculus (DSC). Furthermore, our reduction system provides an environment which supports the nonatomic nature of substitution operation and hence can lend itself to parallel and optimal reduction. We shall compare our reduction method with other reduction methods, and discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages of our method.

Optimizing Select-Project-Join Queries, Rebecca Anne Miller Jan 1990

Optimizing Select-Project-Join Queries, Rebecca Anne Miller

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

An optimal retrieval algorithm for relational database queries is a highly sought after ideal. A great amount of research has been applied in the quest for a better, faster, and cheaper universal retrieval scheme. Unfortunately there is no panacea, no single "optimal" method. With the many different database languages we find a variety of retrieval algorithms. This thesis explores heuristic methods for optimizing relational database query algorithms. It combines individual works on heuristics, cost modeling, decomposition, and join optimization. Lastly it assesses these optimization methods.
