Relationships Between The Groundwaters Of Ash Meadows, Death Valley, Pahranagat Valley And The Nevada Test Site Based On Statistical Analysis And Modeling Of Trace Element Data, Sara Michelle Cox

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Relationships between the groundwaters of the Nevada Test Site, Ash Meadows, Pahranagat, and Death Valley have been studied by many people over many years. Using hydrogeochemical data from these areas (sampled and analyzed by the Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies) hydrologic subbasins were classified on the basis of trace element concentrations and compare these to previous classification systems. In addition, previously suggested flow relationships were examined on the basis of trace element concentrations, in particular those elements which are thought to behave conservatively in oxidizing environments. These efforts were made with the aid of statistical analyses such as principal …

The Reading Span Test And Its Predictive Power For Reading Comprehension Among Young And Old Adults, Paul James Schroeder Jan 2008

The Reading Span Test And Its Predictive Power For Reading Comprehension Among Young And Old Adults, Paul James Schroeder

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Although many researchers appear to agree on the usefulness of both simple and complex span tasks, many disagree on the specifics of how or why they measure working memory. The following paper considers competing theories of the relationship between working memory tasks and higher order cognitive function. Consideration is given to simple and complex measures of working memory, various theories about them, and theories based on research within the cognitive aging domain. Subsequent discussion reports the findings from a new study aimed at resolving disagreements about the relationship between lower and higher level cognitive abilities in college-age and older adults.

Test Suite Prioritization Techniques Applied To Web-Based Applications, Vani Kandimalla Jan 2008

Test Suite Prioritization Techniques Applied To Web-Based Applications, Vani Kandimalla

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Web applications have rapidly gained importance in many businesses. The increased usage of web applications has created a challenging need for efficient and effective web application testing strategies. This thesis examines one aspect of web testing, that of test suite prioritization. We examine new test suite prioritization strategies that may improve the rate of fault detection for user-session based test suites. These techniques consider test-lengths and systematic coverage of parameter-values and their interactions. Experimental results show that some of these prioritization strategies often improve the rate of fault detection of test suites when compared to random ordering of the test …

Development And Validation Of The Facial Affect Learning And Memory Test (Falmt) And Facial Identification Of Affect Task (Fiat), Christina Marie Armstrong Jan 2007

Development And Validation Of The Facial Affect Learning And Memory Test (Falmt) And Facial Identification Of Affect Task (Fiat), Christina Marie Armstrong

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The neurocognitive assessment of visuospatial memory has begun to receive attention and has been recognized as being important in the understanding of overall memory processing. Additionally, there has been an increased emphasis on emotion processing, particularly affect discrimination and attention bias. However, little information is currently available on learning and memory for emotional information. Because emotion is expressed to a large extent through nonverbal means, a nonverbal test of emotion learning would be valuable, although no such test currently exists. The aim of the current study was to establish normative performance characteristics, convergent and divergent validity for two newly developed …

Scenic America: This Is A Test Poems, Rachael Sullivan Jan 2007

Scenic America: This Is A Test Poems, Rachael Sullivan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The stilled moment of a photograph is a type of promise---which we believe because we see---that time cannot be stopped. In this series of poems, I have tried to confront a stilled moment, discarded object, or fragment of a past, and I have found this confrontation readily sparked in an ekphrasis of photography. Etymologically, "ekphrasis" means to call out (or describe) an object, traditionally an art object. However, ekphrasis as a literary genre has attracted much critical interest, complicating the term's definition. I employ an ekphrasis of dialogue, hoping to reach beyond both the poem and ekphrastic object. Given this …

Validation Of The Load Collector Ratio (Lcr) Method For Predicting The Thermal Performance From Five Passive Solar Test Rooms Using Measured Data, Daniel James Overbey

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The standard procedure used to analyze buildings that feature passive solar heating strategies is the load collector ratio (LCR) method. This procedure was developed by the Los Alamos National Laboratory between 1977 and 1984. As a result of the LCR method, one will obtain the solar savings fraction (SSF) of the input passive solar builDing The SSF is the most widely accepted metric used to evaluate the effectiveness of passive solar heated buildings. The SSF may be defined as the extent to which a building's passive solar feature(s) reduces a building's auxiliary heat requirement relative to a comparable building devoid …

Lead Contamination Risks From Imported Candies: Developing A Protocol To Test For Lead In Candy Products Using The X-Ray Flouresence Instrument, Tracy L Donnelly

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The problem of lead in candies imported from Latin America and or Thailand is an important public health issue. These candies come from a number of sources, with lead often being present when tamarind or chili pepper is used as an ingredient. Currently, it is expensive and time consuming for heath protection agencies to test candy that has entered the consumer market in the United States. Hence children may potentially be exposed to lead contamination. If community health agencies had access to XRF technology, health agencies could quickly determine if specific candies contain lead. To date, there has not been …

Sequential Procedure For Test Of Uniformity In Multinomial Models, Hai Zhen Jan 2005

Sequential Procedure For Test Of Uniformity In Multinomial Models, Hai Zhen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis we deal with a sequential procedure for testing uniformity in a given multinomial distribution using inverse sampling. From a decision theoretic point of view, we devise an efficient stopping rule that satisfies a pre-determined P*-condition. Dirichlet distribution Type II will be primarily used for developing the inverse-type sequential procedure based on the decision theoretic point of view. We assume a non-zero cell probability (parameter) for given multinomial models. In particular, we will be focusing on the equal cell probability configuration (EPC) among all feasible cell configurations. One of the main goals is to find optimal sample sizes …

The Influence Of Instruction Set And Test Format On The Detection Of Malingering, Teri Jean Forrest Jan 2005

The Influence Of Instruction Set And Test Format On The Detection Of Malingering, Teri Jean Forrest

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

It is increasingly common for individuals involved in civil litigation to undergo neuropsychological evaluation. This trend increases the possibility that individuals receive trade-secret test information from their attorneys before evaluation in order to maximize their ability to appear injured. However, no known research has examined what effect this knowledge may have on an individual's ability to successfully evade detection as a malingerer. The current investigation examined the performance of archival brain-damaged individuals, normal controls, and individuals in three malingering groups on both previously and newly developed malingering indices for the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and the Halstead Category Test …

Capitalism And Violence: A Test And Critique Of The Alienation Proposition, Roger Isaac Roots Jan 2004

Capitalism And Violence: A Test And Critique Of The Alienation Proposition, Roger Isaac Roots

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The belief that primitive societies are more harmonious than modern ones is "deeply engrained in scholarly discourse" (Edgerton 1992, 2). Durkheim, Weber, and Marx all believed in the notion (Edgerton 1992, 3). Since at least the nineteenth century, social scientists have proposed that capitalism and industrialism represent artificial phenomena, alien to human nature, and that the growth and spread of capitalism in recent generations has spawned an increasing degree of angst, frustration, conflict, and stress on human societies. This concept, known as alienation, has been especially popular among sociologists of Marxist orientation who perceive human misery to be a product …

Results indicated 52 males and 33 females had actual treadmill times of six minutes or greater. The prediction equations predicted 59 males …

Diagnostic Test And Analytical Methods For Resolving Fan/Motor Vibration Problems In Air-Conditioning Units, Qin Liu Jan 2001

Diagnostic Test And Analytical Methods For Resolving Fan/Motor Vibration Problems In Air-Conditioning Units, Qin Liu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to develop test and analysis procedures to revise ASHRAE Standard 87.1 Standard for small (<36 in. diameter) propeller fans. Test and analysis procedures also need to be used to convert AHRAE Standard 87.1 - 1992 test results where the fan hub mobility is zero to corresponding results that will exist with a finite (nonzero) hub mobility; In this project, the vibration modes of a fan with three cambered blades were investigated. Experimental and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was performed on the fan blade and the fan-motor unit. The project compared the results obtained from the FEA and experimental modal analysis of the fan assembly. A very good correlation between FEA and the experimental modal analysis was found.

The Effect Of Feedback At Test On Source Memory Performance, Shelby Kainani Morita Jan 2000

The Effect Of Feedback At Test On Source Memory Performance, Shelby Kainani Morita

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Previous research has demonstrated that witnesses can come to believe they saw details that were only suggested to them after the witnessed event. For both theoretical and practical reasons, there is interest in developing techniques that reduce the effect of misleading post-event information. The present study examined the effect of receiving feedback at the time of retrieval on eyewitness suggestibility. All participants watched a videotaped crime of a home burglary and then answered questions that contained misleading information. On a final source memory test, participants that were provided with feedback as to the accuracy of their attributions during the first …

Interpretation Of Cone Penetration Test Data For Underconsolidated Clay, Jeffrey Alec Moss Jan 2000

Interpretation Of Cone Penetration Test Data For Underconsolidated Clay, Jeffrey Alec Moss

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this study, cone penetration test data is correlated to vane shear and triaxial undrained shear strength test data for a saturated and underconsolidated marine clay. It is shown that cone penetration test data not corrected for pore pressures underestimates undrained shear strength. Additionally, small increases in the degree of consolidation of the underconsolidated clay increases the undrained shear strengths.

An Augustinian Analysis Of The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, Jon Mcclendon White Jan 2000

An Augustinian Analysis Of The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, Jon Mcclendon White

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Applying the Christian principles of depraved human nature, expectation of detrimental behavior from irrational actors, and rational attempts to limit the destructiveness of war, Augustine would conclude that the declared nuclear weapons states have a moral obligation to prevent proliferation of nuclear weapons. Laws suitable to the needs of the times are the appropriate method for accomplishing this. The pending Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) is one such law. Because the CTBT bans all nuclear explosions and establishes an intrusive inspection scheme, it will have an impact on the U. S. Department of Energy (DoE). DoE should respond by participating …

Modeling The Rates Of Lead And Strontium Uptake By Zeolitized Tuff From Rainier Mesa, Nevada Test Site, Nevada, Patricia Ann Bernot Jan 1999

Modeling The Rates Of Lead And Strontium Uptake By Zeolitized Tuff From Rainier Mesa, Nevada Test Site, Nevada, Patricia Ann Bernot

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The fate and transport of contaminants released during nuclear testing at the NTS are partly controlled by interactions of their aqueous species with mineral surfaces. It has been shown that retardation of contaminants in the subsurface may be controlled by intraparticle mass transfer rather than equilibrium partitioning. For this reason, the rate of lead (Pb) and Strontium (Sr) uptake by zeolitized tuff from Rainier Mesa, NTS, was studied as a function of pH, ionic strength, and metal concentration; To test the hypothesis that sorption of Pb occurs through surface precipitation and Sr sorbs through diffusion, the data were modeled by …

Summary Fading Knowledge Of Results (Kr): Test For The Dynamic Acquisition Protocols, Changjiang (River) Sun

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the effects of dynamic acquisition protocols by comparing dynamic and static KR schedules in a single experiment. Five groups of participants (n = 13 per group) completed 90 acquisition trials of a force production task. The analysis of delayed no-KR retention test revealed that the participants in the summary fading KR group performed better than the three static KR groups, indicating that the dynamic acquisition protocols produces more efficient learning than static acquisition protocols. This finding is interpreted as support for Adams' theory (1971) that the most appropriate acquisition protocol would …
