The Logic Of Movement: Consumption Logistics On The Las Vegas Strip, Robert Dean Jan 2008

The Logic Of Movement: Consumption Logistics On The Las Vegas Strip, Robert Dean

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The omnipresence of consumption in advanced societies is indisputable; spaces designed to facilitate consumption (or means of consumption) are one aspect of that presence. On the surface, these spaces appear to be quite harmless dreamworlds full of possibilities, but at another level they are highly instrumental, composed of various mechanisms that work to sell commodities through the manipulation of consumer behavior. I argue that consumption spaces express a logic of movement, and a consumption logistics, that is based on the commodity form and relatable to warfare that works to domesticate consumers into the commodity system. I engage in an exploratory …

Formula For Success: How Las Vegas Became The Entertainment Capital Of The World, Scott M Pruett Jan 2008

Formula For Success: How Las Vegas Became The Entertainment Capital Of The World, Scott M Pruett

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This paper will espouse the theory that Las Vegas was able to evolve into the entertainment capital of the world by establishing itself as an island of controlled social deviance. That is to say that the city became an area of regulatory exception---one with distinct legal differences in a limited geographical area---and allowed a degree of social deviance by permitting behaviors that would be illegal in nearly any other American city. My research will show that when such an environment enables its visitors to experience extended periods of pleasurable sensory stimulation, whether the inducement be physical, psychological, or chemical, this …

The Multiple Effects Of A Showroom On Casino Outlets In Las Vegas, Dongnam Kang Jan 2007

The Multiple Effects Of A Showroom On Casino Outlets In Las Vegas, Dongnam Kang

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In the competitive casino market of Las Vegas, casino operators make efforts to lure more visitors to their properties by offering various live entertainment shows that competitors do not offer. The reviewed literature revealed that showrooms appeared to attract people to the casino floor and, consequently, had significant impact on driving additional casino revenues. However, the literature did not reveal actual evidence that showrooms, which require huge investments and operating costs, actually generate additional revenues to casino hotels. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to investigate the indirect impacts of shows offered in a hotel casino by examining the …

Transforming The Suburban Realm: A Call For Diversification In The Las Vegas Home-Building Process, Kory W Harris

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

More U.S. residents live within suburban boundaries than they do the central cities and rural regions combined---creating a need for suburban design methods that adequately meet the desires of the suburban population. The design of suburban neighborhoods over the past several decades, however, has not adequately met the needs of its residents. This dilemma has only intensified over the past several years because of an increasingly varied group of potential hornebuyers. Local, state, and federal governments---as well as land developers, planners, and architects---need to raise awareness to the issues facing suburban design. By incorporating strategic design elements into the development …
