Quilting Between The Revivals: The Cultural Context Of Quilting, 1945--1970, Colleen Rose Hall-Patton May 2004

Quilting Between The Revivals: The Cultural Context Of Quilting, 1945--1970, Colleen Rose Hall-Patton

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Quilting is a reflection of women's roles in the family. What happened to quilting between 1940 and 1970 is important to examine because it tells us much about the transformation of women from producers to consumers. In the twentieth century, quilts were increasingly replaced by mass produced blankets. While quilting literature has argued that quilting, for all practical purposes, ceased between 1940 and 1970, women resisted the change to consumerism by continuing to produce quilts and negotiating their use of mass production; The portrayal of quilting in magazines shifted from an integral role as thrifty and decorative to being almost …

Survival Of Enterococcal And Streptococcal Species In Natural Waters, Kameron L Entrekin Jan 2004

Evaluation Of The Perceptual Magnet Effect And Categorical Perception For Musical Timbre, Melissa Kay Griffith Jan 2004

Evaluation Of The Perceptual Magnet Effect And Categorical Perception For Musical Timbre, Melissa Kay Griffith

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Recent auditory research has raised fundamental questions about the perceptual magnet effect (PME), where discrimination performance is poorer for stimuli that approach best exemplars of a phonetic category. It has been suggested that the effect reflects inter-categorical comparisons, and might not generalize to nonspeech. Three experiments addressed these concerns. In Experiment 1 prototype and non-prototype stimuli were determined from goodness ratings of synthesized (violin) timbres varying in center frequencies of F1 and F2 formants. Experiment 2 evaluated for a PME using discrimination data, and influences from other categories by comparing goodness ratings from stimuli in prototype, non-prototype, and no context …

Pathological Gambling And Substance Abuse In The Las Vegas Arrestee Population, Jeffrey Michael Groebner Jan 2004

Pathological Gambling And Substance Abuse In The Las Vegas Arrestee Population, Jeffrey Michael Groebner

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

There has been extensive literature on the nature of pathological gambling and substance abuse on criminal offending; however, most of what is known about these disorders stem from clinical populations and the general population. Both of these populations differ from arrestee populations; therefore, our understanding about the disorders remains limited. This is a study among the arrestee population utilizing data collected in Las Vegas detention centers during a federally funded research project that monitors the extent and nature of drug abuse. In addition to the program, a Gambling Addendum was administered to all willing participants; Findings support a greater prevalence …

Abuse Histories Among Female Inmates, Magann Jordan Jan 2004

Abuse Histories Among Female Inmates, Magann Jordan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The current study explores the extent and the consequences of one's prior history of physical and sexual abuse on criminal behavior of female offenders. Using a sample of incarcerated women, it will first investigate the prevalence of prior abuse (sexual and physical) among female offenders. Survey responses will then be analyzed to assess psychological problems and possible criminal patterns that are related to abuse history. Specifically, the study examines whether prior abuses are risk factors for committing particular types of criminal offenses. The results of this study are then discussed in terms of their implication for criminological theory and public …

Specialization In The Criminal Careers Of Sex Offenders, Jodi K Olson Jan 2004

Specialization In The Criminal Careers Of Sex Offenders, Jodi K Olson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Recent public policy has been implemented with the assumption that sex offenders are highly motivated and tend to exhibit specialization and compulsivity in their offending patterns. Past research has not been able to confirm or invalidate this assumption, and has reflected many inconsistencies when drawing conclusions about sex offender profiles and career trajectories; Drawing upon a national sample of offenders, the current study examines the degree of specialization in the criminal careers of sex offenders and other groups of offenders. Results from the adjacent specialization analyses of the general offense categories indicated that sex offenders are among the least specialized …

Self-Stabilizing Inter-Domain Policy Routing, Venkatakrishnan Trichy Ramasubramanian Jan 2004

Self-Stabilizing Inter-Domain Policy Routing, Venkatakrishnan Trichy Ramasubramanian

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

As the complexity of the networked systems increases, the likelihood of experiencing unanticipated faults grows. Self-stabilization is the most general technique to design fault tolerant systems. This paradigm was introduced by Dijkstra in 1974. A self-stabilizing system guarantees that starting from an arbitrary state, the system converges to a legal state in a finite number of steps and remains in a legal state until another fault occurs. Such a system after any unexpected perturbation eventually recovers without any outside intervention; The goal of this thesis research is to design a self-stabilizing Inter Domain Policy Routing Algorithm in order to make …

Determination Of Reliability Indices For Congestion On Urban Arterial Streets, Venu Parimi Jan 2004

Determination Of Reliability Indices For Congestion On Urban Arterial Streets, Venu Parimi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Motorists tend to accept certain levels of delay during peak traffic conditions, but become increasingly agitated when the travel times increase unpredictably due to incidents on roadways. The objective of this thesis is to develop a reliability index quantifying the spatial and temporal distribution of traffic congestion on urban arterial streets. Delays caused due to recurrent and non-recurrent congestion need to be differentiated. Two approaches for estimating road network reliability are proposed to quantify delays due to recurrent and non-recurrent congestion. These indices are expressed as functions of operating speed and travel time respectively. A case study using urban arterial …

Client Perceptions Of Child Protective Services, Jerry L Rohleder Jan 2004

Client Perceptions Of Child Protective Services, Jerry L Rohleder

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Inductive research methods are used to explore client perceptions of Child Protective Services in Clark County, NV. Interviews with fifteen persons who had experiences with CPS are discussed. The small sample limits the generalizability of the results, but there are indications the type of help offered or received is not always what a particular client perceives is needed, they are dissatisfied with the way they are treated, and they are not aware of any mechanisms available to register disagreements. Many of the clients express feelings of alienation and anomie. Suggestions for improving this relationship include changes in reporting procedures, showing …

Balanced Biosocial Theory For The Social Sciences, Michael A Restivo Jan 2004

Balanced Biosocial Theory For The Social Sciences, Michael A Restivo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Evolutionary theory is the unquestioned paradigm for all biological sciences and is gaining acceptance in many of the social sciences, predominantly psychology and anthropology. Sociology, as a discipline, has failed to embrace evolutionary theory and remains uninformed about the most powerful scientific theory of living things: the theory of evolution by Darwinian selection. Traditional sociological theory is based largely on empirically questionable ideas about human development, behavior, and psychology, and often contradicts fundamental knowledge about evolution. As such, it often fails to contribute to a coherent and progressive corpus of sociological knowledge. Biosocial theories present a compelling alternative to the …

Hydrocarbon Occurrences Within The La Popa Basin: Potential Source Rocks, Thermal Maturation, And Hydrocarbon Migration Along The La Popa Salt Weld, La Popa Basin, Ne Mexico, Samuel Mark Hudson Jan 2004

Hydrocarbon Occurrences Within The La Popa Basin: Potential Source Rocks, Thermal Maturation, And Hydrocarbon Migration Along The La Popa Salt Weld, La Popa Basin, Ne Mexico, Samuel Mark Hudson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

New geochemical data indicate the presence of hydrocarbons along the La Popa salt weld, reinforcing the idea that salt welds significantly affect the migration pathways of hydrocarbons. Geochemical testing of samples collected along the length of the weld indicate that at least some of this material is not in situ, but has migrated to its current location along the weld. Distribution of migrated hydrocarbons along the weld is not uniform, and occurs where upturned lithologies and appreciable amounts of remnant salt are present; Biomarkers within samples collected along the weld suggest a clay-rich source rock for the hydrocarbons. None of …

Three-Dimensional Modeling And Simulation Of Manufacturing Processes For Transmuter Fuel Fabrication, Richard Arthur Silva Jan 2004

Three-Dimensional Modeling And Simulation Of Manufacturing Processes For Transmuter Fuel Fabrication, Richard Arthur Silva

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A proposed method of converting long-lived radionuclides contained within spent nuclear fuel into shorter-lived radionuclides is known as transmutation. The feasibility assessment of fuel manufacturing for transmutation is necessary for the overall success of the transmutation project. While not exhaustive, the review encompassed facilities within the U.S. Department of Energy, international operations, as well as, work performed collegiately; The manufacturing of fuel for transmutation will certainly utilize automation and robotics. A simplified 3-D model of a fuel handling operation was …

Metricizing' Non-Metric Craniofacial Traits: Application Of Three Dimensional Geometric Morphometric Analysis To Ancestral Identification, Summer Joy Decker Jan 2004

Metricizing' Non-Metric Craniofacial Traits: Application Of Three Dimensional Geometric Morphometric Analysis To Ancestral Identification, Summer Joy Decker

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Non-metric traits are commonly used by anthropologists to distinguish between groups for such things as age, sex, and even ancestry. However, many non-metric traits cannot be measured with traditional osteological tools. While these traditional methods are useful, they do not take individual variation into account. This thesis uses geometric morphometric coordinate data to 'metricize' such traits and to evaluate their accuracy of correctly assigning unknown individuals to statistically defined groups; A 3-D digitizer was used to collect data from 39 craniofacial landmarks to capture the form of several phenotypic facial characteristics. The sample consisted of individuals from four different geographic …

Vietnam And The More Flags Campaign, 1964--1965: The Search For American Allies In The Commonwealth, Becky L Bruce

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In April 1964, the United States initiated the More Flags campaign in an attempt to establish a western coalition force and diplomatic support system for the South Vietnamese government and for American intervention against the North. Three of the most heavily courted nations were the Commonwealth members of Australia, Great Britain, and Canada. This first in-depth study of this diplomatic effort and the comparative response of these Commonwealth nations provides insight into the U.S. efforts at coalition building, the essentially unilateralist and nationalist nature of U.S. foreign policy, and the varying U.S. relationships with these three important members of the …

A System Model For Source Water Assessment In The Las Vegas Valley, Silvia Albuquerque Jan 2004

A System Model For Source Water Assessment In The Las Vegas Valley, Silvia Albuquerque

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The 1996 amendment to the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974 created the Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP) with an objective to evaluate potential sources of contamination to drinking water intakes. The development of a Source Water Assessment Plan for Las Vegas Valley surface water runoff into Lake Mead is important since it will guide future work on source water protection of the main source of water; Once the vulnerability of the intake was determined, a tool was developed to help with source water assessment, using the system dynamics model Stella. This model calculates the average vulnerability of the intake, …

Gis Analysis Of The Pre And Post-Diversion Water Balances In Owens Valley, California, Anna Corinne Draa Jan 2004

Gis Analysis Of The Pre And Post-Diversion Water Balances In Owens Valley, California, Anna Corinne Draa

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Owens Valley, California is located at the western border of both the Basin and Range and Great Basin Provinces. The valley is hydrologically closed; the only outflow for ground and surface waters is evaporation to the atmosphere. Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) began diverting water from Owens Valley in 1913 and has steadily increased the amount of water removed from the valley since then; LADWP has always assumed that the hydrologic system as it existed in 1913 was in equilibrium with modern climate. This study develops a geographical information systems (GIS) based model of Owens Valley to …

The author also attempted to discover …

Pyrite Geochemistry Across The Betze-Post Deposit, Northern Carlin Trend, Nevada, Christine Ann Henkelman Jan 2004

Pyrite Geochemistry Across The Betze-Post Deposit, Northern Carlin Trend, Nevada, Christine Ann Henkelman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Petrographic, geochemical, and statistical analyses show that stratigraphy and structural controls promoted ore stage fluid flow. For example, ore stage pyrites occur within brecciated rocks and small-scale fractures within the Wispy Member of the Popovich Formation. Ore stage pyrites have trace element signatures that suggest that the fluid was evolving both temporally and spatially. The associated ore stage trace elements include: Au, Cu, Hg, Tl, As, and Sb. Sb has the highest concentration at North Betze and Betze, suggesting that the J-B series faults transported ore fluids that were chemically distinct. As has the highest concentration along the southern part …

Polymer-Supported Reagents For Disinfection Of Water, Sylvester Ojo Ifalade Jan 2004

Polymer-Supported Reagents For Disinfection Of Water, Sylvester Ojo Ifalade

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A macroporous poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) resin having redox N,N-dichlorosulfonamide group, was modified for use in small-scale chlorination of potable water. The resin was synthesized via sulfonyl chloride by modification of the strong acid cation exchange resin, Amberlyst-15. The products obtained after treatment contained -SO2NH2 and -SO 3H groups. The sulfonic acid groups were determined by a total ion exchange capacity measurement. The sulfonamide groups were chlorinated mainly to the dichlorosulfonamide groups by laundry bleach acidified with acetic acid. The concentration of sulfonamide groups was determined by its chlorine holding capacity. The resin was further characterized by photoacoustic infrared spectroscopy. Tap water, sparged …

Perillyl Alcohol And Perillic Acid Enhanced The Sensitivity Of Head And Neck Cancer Cells To Radiation Treatment In Vitro, Daniel Samaila

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Limonene and perillyl alcohol are the naturally occurring monoterpenes found commonly in plant fruits and vegetables. Perillyl alcohol (POH) elicited anticarcinogenic effects in a number of cancer models and pharmacokinetic studies in humans revealed that perillic acid (PA) is the major circulating metabolite following POH administration. Effects of these monoterpenes combined with and without radiation on human head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cell lines (HNSCC) were measured using cytotoxicity and flow cytometry assays. HNSCC cells were pretreated with 1.0 mM PA or 0.5mM POH for 72 hr before exposure to 1Gy or 2Gy radiation dose. Pretreatment with 1.0mM PA …

Angle Constrained Paths In Sensor Networks, Xiaojun Liang Jan 2004

Angle Constrained Paths In Sensor Networks, Xiaojun Liang

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Short-length paths in geometric graphs are not necessarily feasible in sensor networks and robotics. Paths with sharp-turn angles cannot be used by robotic vehicles and tend to consume more energy in sensor networks; In this thesis, we investigate the development of short-length paths without sharp-turn angles. We present a critical review of existing algorithms for generating angle constrained paths. We then consider the construction of routes having directional properties---d-monotone routes which are special cases of angle constrained paths. We develop a centralized algorithm for computing shortest d-monotone paths in triangulated networks. Since local computations are highly desired in sensor networks, …

Measurement Of Lignin And Organic Carbon In Lake Mead Sediment, Ekhlas Lisa Nemr Jan 2004

Measurement Of Lignin And Organic Carbon In Lake Mead Sediment, Ekhlas Lisa Nemr

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Lignin distribution in sediment is a useful tool for tracing the transport of land derived organic matter in an aquatic environment. Tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) thermochemolysis at sub-pyrolysis temperatures of 300°C followed by GC-MS analysis showed a great promise in being able to semi quantitatively assess the nature of organic carbon in sediments. TMAH chemopyrolysis produces methylated syringyl (S), vanillyl (V), and cinnamyl (C) phenols from lignin, these methylated phenols are an indirect measure of lignin in sediment. The concentration of lignin phenols is indicative of the contribution of terrestrial runoff to lake sediments because lignin is exclusively a product of …

Flux Profile Modelling Using Numerical Methods, Bharat Reddy Pemmireddy

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Molecular beam Epitaxy (MBE) is a physical vapor deposition system, used to grow semiconductor layers (epilayers). In order to increase the economics of MBE, the industry has increased the size and number of wafers processed in one stage. This lead to, non-uniformity in thickness of material grown. In this work a process simulation tool based on numerical methods was developed to study different parameters which affect the thickness. The process of emission in open cells was identified as free evaporation and for computer simulation of these types of cells Model I was developed. The process of emission in closed cells …

Power Aware Broadcast Trees For Sensor Networks, Sridhar Veeravalli Jan 2004

Power Aware Broadcast Trees For Sensor Networks, Sridhar Veeravalli

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In a sensor network with nodes distributed randomly in a two dimensional plane, the problem of constructing a power aware broadcast tree from a given source node is a difficult problem when nodes have k different levels of power. In fact, it is known that the problem of constructing a broadcast tree that minimizes total power consumption is NP-hard; We investigate the development of a good approximation algorithm for generating power reduced broadcast trees for sensor networks. We are particularly interested in the diameter of the generated broadcast tree. Both theoretical investigation and simulated results are presented. We present two …
