An Alternative Study Of Chinese History: Two Daoist Temples, Joan Lorraine Mann Jan 2008

An Alternative Study Of Chinese History: Two Daoist Temples, Joan Lorraine Mann

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Daoist temple is a largely overlooked feature in the study of the history of China. The temple has been an important component of Chinese history since the Zhou dynasty, beginning in the Spring and Autumn period and continuing into the Warring States period.1 It is Daoism that made immortals of mortal Chinese war heroes, emperors, leaders, and ancestors. It is these celestials and immortals, found only in a Chinese Daoist temple that can so successfully relate the history of the common man in China. The Chinese have venerated these Daoist celestials and immortals to the status of "gods," and …

The Male Homoerotics Of Shakespearean Drama: A Study Of "The Merchant Of Venice," "Twelfth Night," And "Othello", Anthony Guy Patricia Jan 2008

The Male Homoerotics Of Shakespearean Drama: A Study Of "The Merchant Of Venice," "Twelfth Night," And "Othello", Anthony Guy Patricia

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study seeks to both challenge and complicate the assumed heteronormativity of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, Twelfth Night, and Othello. Reading and analyzing these texts in such a manner provides the only means to access and interpret the homoerotics embedded deeply within them in a meaningful way that, in turn, enhances traditional understanding of Renaissance England.

Viewing The Opposite Sex Through Lifestyle Magazines: An Exploratory Study, Danielle M Thorsen Jan 2008

Viewing The Opposite Sex Through Lifestyle Magazines: An Exploratory Study, Danielle M Thorsen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study is an exploratory study examining the use of traditional stereotypical gender roles and themes projected in the problem pages of Cosmopolitan, Redbook, Maxim, and Men's Health from 2007. This study is grounded in functionalist feminist media theory and is supplemented by normative theory. The findings show that women's lifestyle magazine problem pages lean more heavily towards traditional gender stereotypes, whereas men's lifestyle magazine problem pages rely on less traditional gender stereotypes. This is partially attributed to a similar formula used in both genders' problem pages, encouraging a traditionally stereotypical female approach to both men's and women's problems.

Study Of The Interaction Between Hydrogen And Carbon-Based Nanomaterials, Roberto Felix Jan 2008

Study Of The Interaction Between Hydrogen And Carbon-Based Nanomaterials, Roberto Felix

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Hydrogen is a promising energy carrier. Coupling hydrogen production to renewable energy sources would help alleviate the world's dependence on fossil fuels. A hurdle that must be overcome for that scenario is the development of satisfactory hydrogen storage media. Theoretical work suggests that carbon-based nanomaterials are plausible candidates; The research objective of this work is to study the influence of hydrogen adsorption on the chemical and electronic properties of carbon-based nanomaterials (i.e., single-walled carbon nanotubes and C60). An atomic hydrogen source was constructed. Nanomaterials were exposed to atomic and/or molecular hydrogen, and the local chemical and electronic interaction was studied …

Exploratory Study Of Construction Safety Culture Through Systems Thinking, Charles J. Jr Benford Jan 2008

Exploratory Study Of Construction Safety Culture Through Systems Thinking, Charles J. Jr Benford

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Since its conception, in 1986 after the Chernobyl accident, the term "safety culture" has gained major popularity throughout many systems, especially the construction industry. Although this concept has gained much popularity over the course of two decades, it remains a heavily debated topic between advocates and skeptics for various reasons. Much of the skepticism is due to the failure of proponents of the concept to clearly define and provide an understanding of those factors that comprise what "safety culture" is, and how it can be achieved. A system (particularly a construction system) that possesses a safety culture is one in …

A Study Of Monge Matrices With Applications To Scheduling, Revanth Pamballa Jan 2008

A Study Of Monge Matrices With Applications To Scheduling, Revanth Pamballa

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this study of Monge properties I summarize a few aspects of the rich material based on these properties. Monge properties are related to the theory of convexity and just as convexity is important in classical Mathematics so is the theory of Monge properties important in Computer Science. In this thesis I will summarize a few aspects of Monge properties. I compare some of the different properties and show how that they all go back to Gaspard Monge's original ideas. I will highlight a number of new results in scheduling and show how Monge properties and Monge-like properties play a …

The Experience Of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: A Phenomenological Study, Deborah Sampson Jan 2008

The Experience Of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: A Phenomenological Study, Deborah Sampson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

By 1997, the number of children living in the home of a grandparent had risen to 3.9 million or 5.5 percent. The 2000 Census reports an estimated 5.9 million children live in a household maintained by a grandparent (US Census Bureau, 2000). While there are many benefits to having grandparents raise grandchildren, there are also considerable challenges, impacting the family structure, dynamics, and roles. Further, these children typically matriculate from backgrounds where they were removed from their parents out of their control. They may feel alone, act out, or become withdrawn, resulting in being at-risk for a host of other …

Surface And Interface Study Of Cesium On Silicon Carbide And Hopg Using Photoelectron Spectroscopy And Atomic Force Microscopy, Sharath Sudarshanam

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

TRistructural-ISOtropic (TRISO) fuel particles are being developed for the use in next generation nuclear power plants. They consist of a UO2 kernel coated with layers of different materials to keep the fission products inside the particle. The kernel is surrounded by a porous carbon layer, followed by a dense inner pyrolytic carbon layer, a SiC layer, and a dense outer pyrolytic carbon layer. One central question of this technology is whether the fission products "corrode" this shell of the TRISO particle during operation. To answer this question, we have investigated the interface between cesium (Cs, which is one of the …

Three-Dimensional Numerical Study Of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Design, Jianfei Wu Jan 2008

Three-Dimensional Numerical Study Of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Design, Jianfei Wu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Performance of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells is dependent of a set of complex physical and chemical processes occurring simultaneously. Bipolar plates are important components of PEM fuel cells because they are the first stage of the flow distribution system. A non-uniform flow distribution across the active reaction area within PEM fuel cells will probably lead to an unbalanced use of the precious catalyst, and a lower overall efficiency of the device than expected. A three-dimensional numerical model has been developed to evaluate the PEM fuel cell including the current collectors, flow channels, gas diffusion layers, and membrane. This …

Worksite Schools: A Study Of Cooperation Between Public Education And Private Business, D. Janell Dietz Jan 2008

Worksite Schools: A Study Of Cooperation Between Public Education And Private Business, D. Janell Dietz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The development of business/educational partnerships in the United States has accelerated in the last few years, fueled in large part by industry concerns over a projected scarcity of future workers who are effectively equipped for the demands of a workforce in an evolving technological environment. This has been accompanied by rising concern over parental choice in the matter of what schools their children will attend; Lankard (1995) has opined that in the new economy where school and work are intertwined, it is increasingly apparent that a dual approach to public school reform has appeal, and such partnerships will continue to …

A Multi -Case Study Of Teacher Retention With Veteran Teachers In Hard To Staff Schools, Jacqueline Lissette Garcia Jan 2008

A Multi -Case Study Of Teacher Retention With Veteran Teachers In Hard To Staff Schools, Jacqueline Lissette Garcia

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Over 40 percent of teachers leave the profession within the first five years (Darling-Hammond, 2003; Berry, 2004), and turnover is higher in schools characterized as hard to staff (Ingersoll, 2001). Hard to staff schools often have higher attrition rates, and also have a higher percentage of under qualified teachers (Berry, 2004). The need to retain highly qualified teachers in teaching positions in hard to staff schools is critical because teachers are less likely to continue to teach in schools characterized as such. A multi-case study design was employed to investigate four teachers who have taught in hard to staff schools …

Wayward Fictions: A Study Of The Dynamic Picaresque Novel, Tina Ogorek Jan 2008

Wayward Fictions: A Study Of The Dynamic Picaresque Novel, Tina Ogorek

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The picaresque has been considered a narrow and historically closed genre, limited to a few examples, as well as a wide and flexible genre inclusive of any number of narratives. As an alternative, I propose that it should be seen as a dynamic form, conserving certain historic characteristics, but also adapting to newly current, mostly social, concerns by reconfiguring form and content. Through its double structure it incorporates inconsistencies and controversies, remaining culturally relevant. In the following chapters I have redefined the picaresque elements of two well-known British picaresque novels, added another picaresque novel to the canon, and qualified two …

Their detection is a challenging problem from both medical and image processing point of views. This work presents two concurrent methods for MCC detection, and studies their possible inclusion to a computer aided diagnostic prompting system. One considers Wavelet Domain Hidden Markov Tree (WHMT) for modeling microcalcification edges. The model is used for differentiation between MC and non-MC edges based on the weighted maximum likelihood (WML) values. The classification of objects is carried out using spatial filters. The second method employs SUSAN edge detector in …

A Study Of Change Management Of Uml Diagrams, Ming Chang Jan 2007

A Study Of Change Management Of Uml Diagrams, Ming Chang

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

One of the most critical factors controlling the success of software product development efforts is the management of product changes during development. It is characteristic of software development that everything changes, or can change, continually throughout the process. Requirements can change, the architecture can change, designs can change, and for each of these, the implementation must change. Of course, some changes are natural and necessary. However, it is very common for teams to propose excessive changes that easily overwhelm the budget allocated for the product. Development efforts fail because the effect of each of the changes proposed is not understood …

A Study Of Voltage Regulation And Islanding Associated With Distributed Generation, Chensong Dai Jan 2007

A Study Of Voltage Regulation And Islanding Associated With Distributed Generation, Chensong Dai

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Distributed generation (DG) is increasingly spreading in the form of solar power, wind power, and fuel cell power. These DGs are connected to the power grid in order to benefit the investors for their economical efficiency and reliability. However, the introduction of DGs, especially at a high level of penetration, brings hidden problems to the conventional power distribution system. The conventional power distribution system has only one direction for the power flow, i.e., from the substation to the end user. This situation may not hold with the introduction of DGs because the power flow may reverse direction in some parts …
