Shape Memory Behavior Of Single And Polycrystalline Nickel Rich Nickel Titanium Alloys, Irfan Kaya
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical Engineering
NiTi is the most commonly used shape memory alloy (SMA) and has been widely used for bio-medical, electrical and mechanical applications. Nickel rich NiTi shape memory alloys are coming into prominence due to their distinct superelasticity and shape memory properties as compared to near equi-atomic NiTi shape memory alloys. Besides, their lower density and higher work output than steels makes these alloys an excellent candidate for aerospace and automotive industry. Shape memory properties and phase transformation behavior of high Ni-rich Ni54Ti46 (at.%) polycrystals and Ni-rich Ni51Ti49 (at.%) single-crystals are determined. Their properties are sensitive …

The mandate to reduce greenhouse gases will require highly efficient electric machines for both power generation and traction motor applications. Although permanent magnet electric machines utilizing Nd2Fe14B-based magnets provide obvious power-to-weight advantages over induction machines, the limited availability and high price of the rare earth (RE) metals make these machines less favorable. Of particular concern is the cost and supply criticality of Dy, a key RE element that is required to improve the high-temperature performance of Nd-based magnetic alloys for use in generators and traction motors. Alternatives to RE-based alloys do exist, but they currently lack the energy density necessary …
Magnesium-Titanium Alloys For Biomedical Applications, 2014 University of Kentucky
Magnesium-Titanium Alloys For Biomedical Applications, Ilona Hoffmann
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
Magnesium has been identified as a promising biodegradable implant material because it does not cause systemic toxicity and can reduce stress shielding. However, it corrodes too quickly in the body. Titanium, which is already used ubiquitously for implants, was chosen as the alloying element because of its proven biocompatibility and corrosion resistance in physiological environments. Thus, alloying magnesium with titanium is expected to improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium.
Mg-Ti alloys with a titanium content ranging from 5 to 35 at.-% were successfully synthesized by mechanical alloying. Spark plasma sintering was identified as a processing route to consolidate the alloy …

Thermodynamics And Crystallography Of The Γ→Ε→Α' Transformation In Femnalsic Steels, Scott Thomas Pisarik
Masters Theses
"FeMnAlSiC steels which exhibit two-stage transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) behavior characterized by the γ→ε→α' dual stage martensitic transformation promise to take a leading role in the development of 3rd generation advanced high strength steels. The crystallographic orientation relationship of the γ→α' and γ→ε athermal martensitic transformations in these steels has been determined as the Kurdjumov-Sachs and the Shoji-Nishiyama, respectively. Six crystallographic variants of α-martensite consisting of three twin-related variant pairs were observed in ε- bands. A planar parallelism of {0001}ε || {110}α' and a directional relation of α' lying within 1⁰ of ε existed for these variants. Two regular solution …

Precipitation, Orientation And Composition Effects On The Shape Memory Properties Of High Strength Nitihfpd Alloys, Emre Acar
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical Engineering
NiTiHf high temperature shape memory alloys are attractive due to their high operating temperatures (>100 oC) and acceptable transformation strain compared to NiTi. However, NiTiHf has limitations due to their lack of ductility and low strength, resulting in poor shape memory properties. In this study, Pd has been added to NiTiHf alloys in an attempt to improve their shape memory behavior. A combined approach of quaternary alloying and precipitation strengthening was used.
The characterization of a Ni45.3Ti29.7Hf20Pd5 (at. %) polycrystalline alloy was performed in compression after selected aging treatments. Transmission electron …

The CdTe and GaN detector with a Gd converter have been developed and investigated as a neutron detector for neutron imaging. The fabricated Gd/CdTe detector with the 25 mm thick Gd was designed on the basis of simulation results of thermal neutron detection efficiency and spatial resolution. The Gd/CdTe detector shows the detection of neutron capture gamma ray emission in the 155Gd(n, g)156Gd, 157Gd(n, g)158Gd and 113Cd(n, g)114Cd reactions and characteristic X-ray emissions due to conversion-electrons generated inside the Gd film. The observed efficient thermal neutron detection with the Gd/CdTe detector shows its promise in neutron radiography application. Moreover, a …

Makara Journal of Technology
The high of pH of jatropha fruit hulls causes the negative properties of particleboard made from this material. Adjusting the particle acidity and pressing conditions (temperature and time) is among the technical modifications available to improve this particleboard’s properties. Particle acidity has been adjusted in a previous research project, and immersing the particles in acetic acid was found to be the best treatment in this preliminary research. In order to improve the particleboard’s properties, an experiment was conducted to determine the best pressing temperature and time. The objective of the research was to evaluate the influence of pressing temperature and …

Radiation Characteristics Of A Planar Strip Dipole Antenna And A Slot Dipole Antenna For Thz Applications, Catur Apriono, Eko Tjipto Rahardjo
Makara Journal of Technology
The development of a THz system often requires a device that is used to radiate or detect THz waves. One way to fulfill this requirement is to use an antenna. Therefore, we need to consider the radiation characteristics of an antenna working in the THz region. In this paper, we present simulation study of two dipole antennas, i.e. a planar strip dipole antenna and a slot dipole antenna. The simulation results show that a planar strip dipole antenna has a better radiation efficiency (more than 95%) compared to the slot dipole. It also shows that an efficiency of more than …

Makara Journal of Technology
Tungsten oxide is an n-type semiconductor with interesting physical and chemical properties that make it suitable for various technological applications. Tungsten oxide nanowires were synthesized not only at low temperature but also without the use of any catalysts. The tungsten oxide nanowires were synthesized at 550 °C with tungsten layers onto the ITO glass using thermal chemical vapor deposition (T-CVD). The SEM image shows that the tungsten oxide nanowires are effectively grown with the 200 nm tungsten film. The Raman spectra shoulder at ~690 cm-1 proves the synthesized of tungsten oxide nanowires.

Recycling Roof Tile Waste Material For Wall Cover Tiles, Ambar Mulyono, Silfia Mona Aryani, Joko Lulut
Makara Journal of Technology
Prior research on roof tile waste treatment has attempted to find the appropriate technology to reuse old roof tile waste by create wall cladding materials from it. Through exploration and experimentation, a treatment method has been discovered to transform the tile fragments into artificial stone that resembles the shape of coral. This baked clay artificial stone material is then processed as a decorative element for vertical surfaces that are not load-bearing, such as on the interior and exterior walls of a building. Before applying the fragments as wall tiles, several steps must be taken: 1) Blunting, which changes the look …

Understanding Mechanical And Fatigue Behavior Of A Wrought Magnesium Alloy Using In-Situ Neutron And Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction, 2013 University of Tennessee - Knoxville
Understanding Mechanical And Fatigue Behavior Of A Wrought Magnesium Alloy Using In-Situ Neutron And Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction, Wei Wu
Doctoral Dissertations
Magnesium (Mg) alloys have received great attentions in the past several decades, due to their unique properties of low density, high strength-to-weight ratio, and high specific stiffness. Previous work on fatigue behavior of Mg alloys typically relies on ex situ microstructural characterization and crack-growth monitoring with replica techniques. The primary challenge is thus the lack of an in situ, non-destructive measurement on microstructural length scales, which prevents us from linking the stress analyses (top-down point of view) to the failure mechanisms on inter- and intra-granular scales (bottom-up point of view). A unique opportunity that resolves many of these difficulties …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This paper is based on the idea of current horn mouthpieces being made solely out of brass with a limited market of stainless steel and titanium with plating being silver or gold. This is an opportunity to explore alternate materials; specifically steel, cast iron and aluminum for the base material and chrome, copper and nickel for plating materials. Readers will learn about metal properties such as hardness, thermal conductivity and specific heat and learn why certain materials are more beneficial than others.
Ultrasonic Propagation And Scattering In Pearlitic Steel, 2013 University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Ultrasonic Propagation And Scattering In Pearlitic Steel, Hualong Du
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Diffuse ultrasonic backscatter measurements have been especially useful for extracting microstructural information and for improving flaw detection in materials. In this dissertation, this approach is applied to inspection of railroad wheels. To improve the wear resistance, the tread surfaces of railroad wheels are usually quenched with water to increase the hardness. The pearlite phase of iron, characterized by alternating ferrite and cementite phases, is created by the quenching and the lamellar spacing within grains increases progressively from the quenched tread surface to deeper locations due to the non-uniform cooling rate. The quench depth is an important parameter governing the wheel …
