The Magic Flute: Modern Light On A Classic Opera, 2019 West Virginia University
The Magic Flute: Modern Light On A Classic Opera, Justin E H Burns
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Mozart’s The Magic Flute is a classic opera, showcasing powerful visual moments and well-known songs. This particular production’s lighting design approach consisted of modern design ideas and aesthetics, while remaining true to the classic idea of 2 forces working against one another. Focusing on the major themes in The Magic Flute, the lighting design reinforces the feelings of fear, despair, hope and ultimately enlightenment. This paper describes the process and execution of how the lighting design achieved these goals.

Cloud 9: Bringing The Abstract To Light, Thomas N. Gillette
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
This document chronicles my journey designing the lighting for Carol Churchill’s Cloud 9 in the Creative Arts Center at West Virginia University. Starting with the initial read, this paper will continue through the early meetings and initial concepts discussed by the design team. Proceeding through the evolution of the design up to and throughout the tech process and will conclude with an evaluation of the overall experience. I have also provided a combination of paperwork items which were essential in the mounting of the production including: light plot, the channel hookup, cue list, and the EOS magic sheet. In addition, …

When I say that I am doing a Dance and Human Rights joint senior project people often look at me like I have 3 heads instead of one perfectly sane one that just so happens to want to explore the way we live in this world through both overlapping lenses. In this brain of mine that works just fine, the two subjects are intricately linked.
Due to my interest in this connection, I have become frustrated with human rights work that is often written with a sole focus on the global/big view, distant, technical, theoretical rather …

Kardía: A Choreographic Investigation Utilizing The Human Heart, 2019 The University of Akron
Kardía: A Choreographic Investigation Utilizing The Human Heart, Rebekah R. Mayfield
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The research project, Kardía; A Choreographic Investigation Utilizing the Human Heart, examined how findings regarding the study of the heart influences and expands choreographic options for and approaches to dance as a work of art. The heart is a unique and intricate organ that helps sustain life within a human body. Examined for this project were the structure, actions and functions of the human heart. This data informed and inspired the concepts that were applied to my choreography, culminating in the presentation of my original work entitled Kardía; The Quietest Voice. The creative process I used for this project …
Informed Hearing Loss Prevention For Theatre Uni, 2019 University of Northern Iowa
Informed Hearing Loss Prevention For Theatre Uni, Mallory Park
Honors Program Theses
This study explores the opinions and behaviors related to hearing loss and hearing loss prevention in the demographic of theatre workers at Theatre UNI. Data was collected through a survey dispersed in a department-wide email and by measuring sound level in the scene shop and the costume studio. Survey responses from 11 participants indicated that theatre workers at Theatre UNI may be at risk for noise-induced hearing loss and that further education may aid in prevention of hearing damage.
Su Dansi. A Dance Film – And – Dancing Elements: The Making Of Su Dansi - A Dance Film. An Exegesis, 2019 Edith Cowan University
Su Dansi. A Dance Film – And – Dancing Elements: The Making Of Su Dansi - A Dance Film. An Exegesis, Johanna Omodei
Theses : Honours
This research project titled Dancing Elements explores choreographic conversations between the body and natural elements, specifically water on film. I question how natural elements when viewed in relation to the dancing body, can begin to be seen as a dancing entity. This research is divided between scholarship and the creation of a new dance film, su dansi which is Turkish for ‘water dance.’ su dansi is a collaborative and explorative outcome that plays with the dancing body and water through the art form of film. Drawing from author Sylvie Vitaglione (2016), I have adopted her term “natural elements’’ in reference …

Do You Want To Run A Regression? Nah, I Think I’Ll Dance One Instead: Physicalizing Econometrics, 2019 The College of Wooster
Do You Want To Run A Regression? Nah, I Think I’Ll Dance One Instead: Physicalizing Econometrics, Rachel Lau
Senior Independent Study Theses
This project asked how can one make use of an econometric tool, specifically the regression model, as a source for choreography. Through integrating my research on dance choreography and econometrics, I created a dance piece that demonstrates the numerical relationships of a realized regression equation. The dance was separated into three sections, with each examining an econometric concept. Taking the primary question at hand one step further, this project also explored how this approach to choreography can be generalized so that almost any regression model can be a choreographic tool. Subsequently, a guideline was devised to provide other choreographers various …
