“It’S Just The Way I Learn!” Inclusion From The Perspective Of A Student With Visual Impairment, Danni Gilbert 2018 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

“It’S Just The Way I Learn!” Inclusion From The Perspective Of A Student With Visual Impairment, Danni Gilbert

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications

This article describes the inclusive experience of a student with visual impairment in secondary band settings. Information obtained from students with visual impairments who have experienced active participation in school music ensembles may provide much-needed insight into instructional strategies that could improve inclusion. Many music educators believe they lack adequate resources and training in including students with visual impairments. Therefore, a deeper understanding of the experience of participating in secondary performing ensembles from the viewpoints of students can help guide the efforts of those involved in their music education.

Toward A Pedagogical Guide To Argentine Art Song, Matthew B. Pauls 2018 The University of Western Ontario

Toward A Pedagogical Guide To Argentine Art Song, Matthew B. Pauls

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Argentine art song is a branch of the art song genre that is virtually unknown to Canadian academics and performers. Although there are numerous composers who have contributed songs to this genre, these composers and their contributions to the body of art song repertoire remain virtually unknown. The illusion of their non-existence is perpetuated by a cycle of factors. Publishers, not interested in publishing a product for which there is limited interest, print very little Argentine music. The lack of musical scores makes it difficult for performers to program and record this music. Thus, very few people are exposed to …

A Performance Guide To New Studies For Clarinet By Louis Desantis, Samuel Schreiber 2018 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

A Performance Guide To New Studies For Clarinet By Louis Desantis, Samuel Schreiber

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Louis DeSantis (1893-1940) was a prominent Italian-American clarinetist during the twentieth century. His musical training began in Naples and after immigrating to America in 1912, he held principal clarinet positions with the Chicago Civic Opera Company (1914-1917), St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (1925-1926), Cleveland Orchestra (1926-1929), Philadelphia Orchestra (1930) and the CBS Symphony Orchestra (1931-1940).

Louis DeSantis’s New Studies for Clarinet offers the clarinetist a chance to further familiarize himself with selected orchestral excerpts while also exploring the beautiful aspects of the Italian “bel canto” singing style. The orchestral excerpts come from Ambroise Thomas’s Mignon, Franz Liszt’s Second Hungarian Rhapsody …

Marching Percussion Techniques For Prospective Band Directors: A Course Designed For Instrumental Music Education Majors, William K. Garrett 2018 Liberty University

Marching Percussion Techniques For Prospective Band Directors: A Course Designed For Instrumental Music Education Majors, William K. Garrett

Masters Theses

Instrumental Techniques courses are imperative to prospective instrumental music educators. After all, it is not practical or possible to major in every instrument in a band or orchestra. These classes provide students with a chance to get a basic understanding of the fundamentals covered on each instrument. For wind instruments, these fundamentals include foundations such as embouchure placement and breathing/articulation techniques. Most of these lessons are covered in a limited course of study. Although the instruments are different, many of the techniques, like tonguing and articulation, are consistent. With regards to technical percussion techniques however, things like instrumentation, notation, and …

Mari Folk Music Influences On Andrei Eshpai's Viola Concerto, Vengerskie Napevy (Hungarian Tunes), And A Transcription Of Hungarian Tunes For Viola In The Viola Repertoire, Anna Petrovna Ivanova 2018 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Mari Folk Music Influences On Andrei Eshpai's Viola Concerto, Vengerskie Napevy (Hungarian Tunes), And A Transcription Of Hungarian Tunes For Viola In The Viola Repertoire, Anna Petrovna Ivanova

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Andrei Eshpai was one of the most renown composers who drew on the Mari folk music traditions, within the confines of Western classical music. One of the main purposes of the research is to show how the Mari folk music was applied in Eshpai’s compositions for the viola. In the current research, I will explain the similarity between folk music of Mari and Hungary because the researched composition Hungarian Tunes by Eshpai is based on Mari tunes, however is called Hungarian Tunes. Another purpose of this research is to provide musical analysis and a performance guide for the compositions, where …

Teaching Prospective Verdi Baritones: A Repertoire-Based Approach, Andrew Rethazi 2018 The University of Western Ontario

Teaching Prospective Verdi Baritones: A Repertoire-Based Approach, Andrew Rethazi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The Verdi baritone is one of the most sought-after voice types in the professional operatic sphere due to its leading presence in the Verdi repertoire. However, there exists a gap in the published scholarship about the introduction of the repertoire to younger baritones as a means of teaching the style and performance practice while still in the shelter of the post-secondary environment. This introduction to the repertoire can be a valuable tool in training potential Verdi baritones. The research goals of this monograph are threefold: 1) to establish prerequisite criteria of technical proficiency for young baritones to begin limited study …

String Fundamentals For The Non-String-Playing Conductor, Dianna Fiore, Dianna Marie Fiore 2018 James Madison University

String Fundamentals For The Non-String-Playing Conductor, Dianna Fiore, Dianna Marie Fiore

Dissertations, 2014-2019

There are presently few resources on stringed-instrument fundamentals geared specifically toward the conductor who does not have string-playing experience. This paper is designed to fill this void through an explanation of string fundamentals, which the non-string-playing conductor should comprehend before addressing a string section on the podium. In addition to covering string fundamentals, this paper includes options for designing bowings and case studies of W. A. Mozart’s Divertimento in F major, K.138 and Edward Elgar’s Serenade for Strings in E minor, Op. 20.

Selected Folksong Arrangements Of Zoltán Kodály: An Analysis And Performer’S Guide, Sebastian A. Haboczki 2018 James Madison University

Selected Folksong Arrangements Of Zoltán Kodály: An Analysis And Performer’S Guide, Sebastian A. Haboczki

Dissertations, 2014-2019

The history of Hungarian music and the Hungarian nation is a long and complicated one. Conquered by many different empires throughout history, Hungary faced challenges in maintaining its unique music and cultural heritage. Despite Hungary’s tumultuous changes of governance, its folksongs have evolved and flourished. Through the efforts of people such as Zoltán Kodály, Béla Bartók, and Lászlo Dobszay, these folksongs have been collected, studied, and categorized. Kodály, an accomplished musician whose research and music education philosophy can sometimes overshadow his compositional prowess, also composed folksong arrangements which embody the true nature of Hungarian music. These arrangements can be used …

A Performer’S Guide To The Role Of Aspasia, Melissa McCann 2018 James Madison University

A Performer’S Guide To The Role Of Aspasia, Melissa Mccann

Dissertations, 2014-2019

More than fifteen operas based on Jean Racine’s play, Mithridate (1673), were composed in the eighteenth-century. However, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s version, Mitridate, ré di Ponto (1770), is the only one which is remembered and performed today. Mitridate has earned a special place in Mozart’s operatic output because it can be considered the precursor to Idomeneo (1781), and a “prototype” for the Neo-Neapolitan School. Mozart composed Mitridate at the age of fourteen, which has led scholars to question his maturity level and mental capacity to comprehend grand operatic concepts. Through careful consideration of the sources of Mozart’s musical inspiration, some scholars …
