Change is the only constant in digital collections work. Evolving technologies, resources, and needs require a constant flexibility in not only what work is done, but how and by whom. Over the course of the 2017-2018 academic year, Grand Valley State University Libraries held a series of facilitated conversations to analyze the workflows, organizational structure, and overall support for the management of digital collections and repositories. This article summarizes the facilitation process and highlights areas of opportunity, aspirations, and future directions.

We believe that Elsevier and other major publishers are continuing to engage in anti-competitive practices, which are continuously worsening, and that information gained in the last 15 years urges immediate investigation and intervention into this unregulated market space. As academic institutions focus attention on student retention and rising higher education costs, increasing attention has been paid to reducing the costs of instructional materials. Studies show that the high cost of textbooks, for instance, can impact student course choices, academic performance, and retention. Many faculty have found free, open textbooks and other open educational resources to be a successful alternative to expensive commercial textbooks. University libraries across the country are investing in Digital Humanities and digital scholarship initiatives, providing support for research and teaching using digital tools and methods. Because digital scholarship offers scholars new ways to visualize and analyze their research, which communicates such research in new ways, it has clear lines of connection with scholarly communications. Combining these two unique areas of library activity offers opportunities for new library research by leveraging methods from DH to tackle problems in scholarly communications. Within the University at Albany, the Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Engagement (CURCE) hosts the Annual Undergraduate Research Conference, a program designed to showcase and promote student success and research excellence. Previously, CURCE has relied upon outdated and inefficient methods for soliciting student submissions for this conference. This process will be greatly enhanced by a partnership with the University Libraries, through the use of the Scholars Archive. The shift toward a system of research and scholarship that is open by default is currently in progress. Since 2013, US federal research agencies have required that articles reporting publicly funded research be publicly accessible within 12 months. The Gates Foundation now requires immediate open access for funded research, and a group of 10 national funders in Europe have committed to implementing a similar policy by 2020. In this paper the author examines from a library perspective some of the complications with transitioning to an open access model for journal publishing; how costs that support publishing efforts may shift from readers to researchers; what’s happening within the library community with regard to assessing the value of subscriptions; and what universities may come to expect from content providers as private funders take a more visible role in mandating the “openness” of research information.
