Scholarly publications are a major part of the research infrastructure. One way to make output available is to store the publications in Open Access Repositories (OAR). A Current Research Information System (CRIS) that conforms to the standard CERIF (Common European Research Information Format) could be a key component in the e-infrastructure. A CRIS provides the structure and makes it possible to interoperate the CRIS metadata at every stage of the research cycle. The international DRIVER projects are creating a European repository infrastructure. Knowledge Exchange has launched a project to develop a metadata exchange format for publications between CRIS and OAR …

CRIS (Current Research Information Systems) provide researchers, research managers, innovators, and others with a view over the research activity of a domain. IRs (institutional repositories) provide a mechanism for an organisation to showcase through OA (open access) its intellectual property. Increasingly, organizations are mandating that their employed researchers deposit peer-reviewed published material in the IR. Research funders are increasingly mandating that publications be deposited in an open access repository: some mandate a central (or subject-based) repository, some an IR. University faculty have ongoing pressure to publish their research findings and teaching successes and produce scholarship worthy of tenure. Acceptance to publish an article in a journal can be highly competitive and in some fields of study, there are few journal publication options. With the advent of open access (OA) publishing opportunities, academic libraries are fulfilling a need by supporting sustainable models of scholarly communication that include collaborating with faculty and editors to “start up” an OA journal or convert a traditional print journal to OA. This paper examines Spanish photomontagist, Josep Renaus artistic progression through two exiles (the first in Mexico and the second in East Germany) as an example in which an individual defines his cultural identity first in the context of community, a collective leftist-socialist identity, and then as Stuart Hall points out in terms of 'difference.' When history reveals to Renau his separation from the community, he has no choice but to find himself in an expression of difference — not from the home he makes for himself in Mexico so much as from the neighbor he must criticize in order to …

Making Our Communities Greener: A Case Study Of Promoting Biogas Energy By Tongwei Evergreen Libraries In China, Wenjie Zhou, Tim J. Zou, Elaine X. Dong

Promoting the consumption of new energies, particularly of biogas, in rural areas is a strategic initiative of the Chinese government. The government has incorporated this initiative into many of its rural development plans. Likewise, Tongwei Evergreen Libraries (TEL, 通渭青树图书馆) has also integrated ideas of the initiative into its library services. This paper describes the Biogas Promotion Program (BPP) that TEL implemented, discusses the BPP model and roles of TEL in the program, and analyzes the initial results of the program through surveying local farmers. A survey was developed for this assessment study. The survey results show that the government biogas …

The Simplified Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) is a Semantic Web framework, based on the Resource Description Framework (RDF) for thesauri, classification schemes and simple ontologies. It allows for machine-actionable description of the structure of these knowledge organization systems (KOS) and provides an excellent tool for addressing interoperability and vocabulary control problems inherent to the rapidly expanding information environment of the Web. This paper discusses the foundations of the SKOS framework and reviews the literature on a variety of SKOS implementations. Thirty-two highly cited articles that were influential to scholarly communication in library and information science (LIS) in the latter part of the twentieth century are identified and examined. Journal distributions, major subject themes, and authorship characteristics of these articles are discussed and compared to the majority of scholarly articles published in LIS during the same time period.
