Beyond The Checklist Approach: A Librarian-Faculty Collaboration To Teach The Beam Method Of Source Evaluation, Jenny Mills, Rachael Flynn, Nicole Fox, Dana Shaw, Claire Walker Wiley

Communications in Information Literacy

Evaluating information is an essential skill, valued across disciplines. While librarians and instructors share the responsibility to teach this skill, they need a common framework in order to collaborate to design assignments that give students multiple opportunities to learn. Librarians and First Year Seminar faculty at Belmont University collaborated to design a unit of instruction on source evaluation using the BEAM method. BEAM requires students to apply a use-based approach to evaluation, to read and engage with sources more closely, and to think about how they might use a source for a specific purpose. Structured annotated bibliographies that included BEAM …

Introducing Critical Librarianship To Information Professionals: Using Critical Pedagogy And Critical Information Literacy In An Lis Graduate Course, Marcia Rapchak

Communications in Information Literacy

Critical librarianship, which critiques the role of libraries and information professionals in maintaining systems of oppression, has been growing in popularity in the profession, and instructors in Library and Information Science (LIS) have begun to address critical librarianship in their coursework. While critical pedagogy and critical librarianship have influenced approaches to LIS education, the intersection of these two has not been as thoroughly addressed. Additionally, the literature on critical information literacy focuses largely on library instruction. This case study explores a critical pedagogy approach in a critical librarianship class that prepares students for critical information literacy instruction. The instructor implemented …

“This Is Just What We Do”: Phd Students On Becoming Scholars In A Community Of Practice, Linds Roberts

Communications in Information Literacy

Increasingly librarians are interested in how the Community of Practice (CoP) framework can provide a more complete picture of how information literacy practices are influenced by situated and social learning. Doctoral students are socialized into the practices of the academy and gradually take on the identity and work of a scholar in their field. As an illustration of the CoP framework among doctoral students, the author shares data from a qualitative study with a small group of early-career education PhD students who are developing their information literacy skills within their disciplinary and social contexts, using the CoP as a source …

Three Non-U.S. Perspectives On The Covid-19 Experience In Libraries, Sarah Ruslan, Edward Junhao Lim, Jennifer Aw Stubbs

UConn Library Presentations

This was an interactive panel presented at the Critical Pedagogy Symposium. Our presenters’ theme was their atypical work experiences across different cities.

  • Jennifer shared her perspective as a privileged economic migrant (White American woman in Shanghai). Colleges and graduate schools have been online–successfully–for over a decade. Our students are not alone. This is the new normal and it is cool.
  • Sarah shared her perspective both as a library student doing her fieldwork on a controversial topic during the lockdown in Singapore, as well as a library staff managing on-site student workers who live on campus while she worked from home. …

Exploring Adolescents’ Critical Thinking Aptitudes When Reading About Science In The News, Marianne Bissonnette, Pierre Chastenay, Chantal Francoeur 2021 Université du Québec à Montréal

Exploring Adolescents’ Critical Thinking Aptitudes When Reading About Science In The News, Marianne Bissonnette, Pierre Chastenay, Chantal Francoeur

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This research studies the critical thinking skills of six teenagers in their final years of high school. It looks at the way those students use a set of cognitive skills in order to analyze scientific and pseudoscientific information available in online news articles. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six students chosen according to their results in a questionnaire about interest in science topics. Results show a large gap between participants’ use of critical thinking skills. Most of these skills were mainly used for text comprehension, evoking general knowledge, numeracy, arguments assessment and production, and life skills (open-mindedness and metacognition). The …

Information Literacy Competency Levels Of Social Science Researchers: A Diagnostic Study, Rajesh Singh Dr., Shailendra Kumar Prof.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The present study is a diagnosis of Information Literacy Competency (ILC) levels of social science researchers. The data was empirically collected from 520 researchers and analyzed using differential and inferential statistical techniques. The Information Literacy (IL) competent researchers were maximum 79.6% in ‘Information Use Ethics’, followed by 77.7% in ‘Information Need’, 76.2% in ‘Information Use’, 66.9% in ‘Information Evaluation’ and 53.8% in ‘Information Access’. The study has identified IL deficiencies on different parameters and suggests necessary improvements in the current practices for further enhancement of ILC among researchers.

Ignatian Information Literacy: Applying The Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm To Library Instruction, Anthony Tardiff

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Instruction librarians in higher education specialize in information literacy, which is the set of skills needed to interact effectively with information. The guiding document for library instruction, the Association of College and Research Libraries’ (ACRL) Framework for Information Literacy, calls for imparting the foundational wisdom and self-awareness which underlie these skills. Unfortunately, most library instruction is delivered in 50- or 75-minute “one-shots” focusing on the technical skills of searching library resources, which makes deeper information literacy instruction a challenge. One way to meet this challenge is to utilize the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP), which shares with the ACRL Framework …

Unpacking Lateral Reading Through Practice And Reflection: Metacognitive Strategies Of Critical Source Evaluation, Andrea Baer, Daniel G. Kipnis 2021 Rowan University

Unpacking Lateral Reading Through Practice And Reflection: Metacognitive Strategies Of Critical Source Evaluation, Andrea Baer, Daniel G. Kipnis

Libraries Scholarship

Increasingly librarians are moving away from checklist approaches like CRAAP and advocating for “lateral reading” as a way to quickly evaluate the credibility of online sources. Essentially “lateral reading” is spending little time on a website and more time reading what other sources say about the website in order to quickly evaluate its credibility. While seemingly simple, lateral reading strategies are not always as straightforward as they first appear. Participants will practice lateral reading and consider ways to encourage students to bring metacognitive and critical thinking skills to using lateral reading for source evaluation.

Learning objectives:

  1. To become familiar with …

"Arena" Di Dalam Perilaku Pencarian Informasi Untuk Mendapatkan Lagu: Pendekatan Grounded Theory, Riyan Adi Putra, Laksmi Laksmi, Luki Wijayanti

Jurnal Ilmu Informasi, Perpustakaan, dan Kearsipan

Songs are the simplest things for each individual to like. With the development of information technology, songs have also changed from analog to digital. This causes a song that is a copyrighted work to be easily obtained. Therefore, in this study, we want to discuss the information-seeking behavior of the society to get the song. In this research, the theory of information-seeking behavior will be placed with the theory of actions or habits put forward by Bourdieu, namely capital, habitus, and "arena". This research aims to understand the action in obtaining the song from the perspective of information-seeking behavior theory …

On The Lookout For Lizards: Online Tools For Informed Democratic Citizenship, Robert Detmering, Terri Holtze, Amber Willenborg

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

In her recent essay,“Lizard People in the Library,” Barbara Fister argues that “systems designed to share information virally pose a serious threat to democracy.” As librarians and educators, we have an obligation to help students understand and navigate online platforms that spread misinformation at alarming rates and, in the process, contribute to the erosion of democratic norms and values. Unfortunately, research suggests we might be failing in this regard (Head, Fister, and MacMillan, 2020;Wineburg, Breakstone, Ziv, and Smith, 2020). In this talk, we will describe the development and implementation of the University of Louisville’s Citizen …
