Situating Information Literacy Within The Curriculum: Using A Rubric To Shape A Program, Iris Jastram, Danya Leebaw, Heather Tompkins

Rubrics are rapidly growing subfield of information literacy assessment, providing a powerful tool for understanding student learning. This paper explores the role that the creation and application of an information literacy rubric can play in program development. Because of the information literacy instruction have opened up, we have begun the long progress of arriving at a shared understanding of information literacy on campus, and our information literacy program is better integrated with campus-wide goals.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the Apprenticeship Model for the teaching of information literacy skills. The research questions for this study were: (a) Will at least 70% of the participating students increase their scores on specific TRAILS Assessment items related to using information responsibly and ethically? (b) What improvements will students make towards the understanding of the responsible and ethical use of information? and (c) What best practices can be gained from the application of the Apprenticeship model to information literacy instruction?

Two librarians at a small STEM academic library have partnered with professors to develop and teach chemistry and writing courses. These librarians have successfully worked with professors to serve as an active presence within the classroom. This article describes the challenges of navigating the typical obstacles librarians face when attempting to integrate information literacy into the curriculum, reflects on the benefits of these collaborations, and touches on strategies for implementing similar programs at other institutions. As information literacy (IL) becomes more accepted as a core mission for a comprehensive post-secondary education, efforts on many campuses to universally integrate it into the curriculum are thwarted by logistical and pedagogical obstacles. Using the embedded librarian model in the e-learning environment can remove many of the hurdles that present themselves in the academic library. Librarians can use e-learning to “teach the teacher” on how to provide IL education. During the summer of 2012, a team of four faculty members from the College of Technology redesigned Tech 12000 (Design Thinking in Technology). This course, after its first year of implementation as a traditional course, was flipped and blended. In addition, the content related to achieving the learning outcomes was drastically remodeled. Faculty threw out the paper-based textbooks, lecture approaches and large class sizes. The new course embraced a distributed model of resources including web based text and multimedia created by our faculty and others accessed by students asynchronously in preparation for class. This presentation was given at the 2014 UnConference hosted by the Academic Libraries of Indiana’s Information Literacy Committee. It outlined the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education being drafted by the Association of College and Research Libraries. The presentation specifically focused on the 6 proposed threshold concepts described in the draft Framework, and discussed challenges and opportunities of applying threshold concepts to the design of information literacy instructional efforts.

The intent of this study was to evaluate the Guide on the Side (GotS), an online learning tool developed by the University of Arizona Libraries, and a screencast tutorial for teaching information literacy and database searching skills. Ninety undergraduate students were randomly assigned into three groups: group 1 completed a GotS tutorial; group 2 viewed a screencast presenting identical content; and a control group. Each group completed an identical 16-item post-test. An analysis of variance revealed statistically significant differences between the control group and both treatment groups; however, there was no statistical difference between treatment groups.
