Streaming Video Resources For Teaching, Learning, And Research, Julie A. DeCesare 2014 Providence College

Streaming Video Resources For Teaching, Learning, And Research, Julie A. Decesare

Julie A DeCesare

In less than 10 years the availability of digitally converted or born digital video, has grown exponentially. Libraries and librarians are constantly navigating, and helping their patrons navigate, this shift from analog to digital. For access to video, our libraries are challenged by an individual consumer marketplace, where institutional access is often limited and expensive. Due to limitations of streaming content, licensing and copyright issues for use in learning management systems and public performance screenings, and time and budgetary issues surrounding the conversion of analog to digital formats, public and educational institutions are still very reliant on physical formats. Patron …

Econtent Quarterly - Volume 1, Issue 3, Sue Polanka, Mirela Roncevic

University Libraries' Staff Publications

Welcome to the third, Spring 2014 issue of eContent Quarterly. Since launching the journal at 2013 ALA in Chicago, we’ve covered an array of topics from every corner of the industry, including sweeping overviews of the vastness of the e-content landscape; case studies pointing to how e-content continues to revolutionize research in academic and school settings; and various product reviews, with insight from those who create them and feedback from those who use and purchase them. To our own surprise, we’ve also been able to structure each issue around a central theme. Issue 1, thus, focused on the importance of …

Photomicrographs, The Npr 100, And Student Teaching: Library Liaison Ideas That Really Work, Katherine Furlong, Janelle L. Wertzberger

Janelle Wertzberger

In 1997, Gettysburg College's Musselman Library revived a dormant liaison program. Librarians were assigned to each department and program on campus and expected to serve as the first point of library contact for the teaching faculty. Some core communications and activities emerged that we now encourage every liaison to practice; attending department meetings, sending reviews of new materials, tracking faculty book orders, and visiting faculty offices are seen as standard liaison activities. We were delighted to find that almost every librarian had some unique and interesting experiences to report. The authors collected these experiences so that they could be shared …

Blogging the Library

Hello!! Since the last time I posted a lot has happened and so far, still good. That’s not to say I haven’t needed help on a few Reference Questions but things are going pretty well. I’ve had a few ‘RefWins’ where I’ve felt that I was particularly helpful, one was even over chat! Everything is going great thus far and I’m definitely learning, a lot. [excerpt]

Beyond Search: Information Literacy, Special Collections, And The First Year, Stefanie R. Bluemle, Sarah M. Horowitz

Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works

Recent research in information literacy (IL) suggests librarians should shift the emphasis of IL instruction toward higher-level concepts rather than search mechanics. This session describes how the Augustana library drew upon the results of local assessments and national research to re-imagine its first-year learning outcomes so as to focus on higher-level skills and recognize the importance of special collections in teaching IL in the college’s required first-year sequence. We address transforming IL pedagogy throughout the library as well as designing special collections as a hands-on learning laboratory.

Six Questions And A Strategy For Campus-Wide Information Competence, Stuart Basefsky 2014 Cornell University

Six Questions And A Strategy For Campus-Wide Information Competence, Stuart Basefsky

Stuart Basefsky

[Excerpt] At Cornell University Library (CUL) a committee was set up in January 2005 to address the issue of information literacy at the university. The committee did extensive research on this topic and developed an approach for seeking solutions. In the course of these deliberations, I volunteered to create two items to serve as the basis for ensuing discussions. 1. a conceptual framework for this policy initiative (included in this article) 2. a document that outlines the basic or core competencies common to all constituents of what is called the Cornell community (the result was the six questions which are …

Creating And Sharing Information Literacy Open Educational Resources, Philip Russell 2014 Technological University Dublin

Creating And Sharing Information Literacy Open Educational Resources, Philip Russell

Conference Papers

From June 2010 until the present, a suite of online reusable learning objects (RLOs) has been created at the Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT Dublin) library covering a range of information literacy (IL) competencies. These RLOs have helped to facilitate student transition from second to third level, advance IL and enrich the student learning experience. The paper outlines the development of these resources, how these learning objects have been integrated into academic modules at ITT Dublin and how they have been shared and reused as open educational resources at national and international level. The author also discusses future plans for …

Blogging the Library

I’ve got a few weeks under my belt now with this Internship and so far, so good. I’ll be totally honestly though, when I first started every time someone came near the desk I got a little nervous because after 3.5 years I thought I knew my way around the Library; nope. BUT, now with three weeks of perusing research guides, databases, asking a zillion questions and rereading everything in my training guide approximately three times, I feel confident that I can be helpful, and that’s great! Why Go To The Library? Pedagogical Reflections [Poster], Terry Dwain Robertson 2014 Andrews University

Why Go To The Library? Pedagogical Reflections [Poster], Terry Dwain Robertson

Terry Dwain Robertson

Why should Seminary students “go to the library”? Because of the ubiquity of online resources, it is increasingly possible to complete the degrees without setting foot in the building that is full of books. This is so even though many classes require readings or research papers that anticipate the use of the library. Surprisingly, some assessment feedback from students suggests that this mode of independent text based activity is not necessarily appreciated as time well spent. One proposal for responding to this trend reflects on the question of “time.” Time is a constraint of the human condition. We lack the …

Using Rubrics For Information Literacy Skill Assessment: A Case Study For Business Education, Bobbi Makani, Ann Agee, Marilyn Easter, Yuhfen Diana H. Wu 2014 San Jose State University

Using Rubrics For Information Literacy Skill Assessment: A Case Study For Business Education, Bobbi Makani, Ann Agee, Marilyn Easter, Yuhfen Diana H. Wu

Diana H. Wu

Information literacy—the ability to find, evaluate and use information effectively—is an essential skill set. The authors examine how assignments such as case analyses and research reports help business students master these abilities and provide examples of how analytic rubrics with measurable outcomes are particularly suited to assessing these skills. Also demonstrated is how librarians enhance and support student learning of information literacy by teaching in-depth research skills. Working together, professors and librarians can give students a solid foundation in the information-handling skills they need to be effective and productive in the workplace today.
