A reality of dwindling resources in archives, as well as in higher education more broadly, is that the ability to purchase and maintain a specialized archives management and content management software is often out of reach. For Marshall University Special Collections, the solution to make finding aids and other digital archival materials accessible online required evaluating software already available at the university. As part of the strategic planning process begun in 2020, the Grand Valley State University Libraries Strategic Planning Team developed a collection of planning-to-plan documentation to support the development of a new strategic planning framework. This documentation includes descriptions of the project and scope, the strategic planning team and their roles, and the timeline for the planning process. It also outlines the design principles that will guide the planning process and the ways that the team will incorporate methodologies like SOAR, North Star, and Design Thinking.

Crafting A Closure And The Art Of Deconstruction: Lessons Learned From The Oregon College Of Art And Craft Library’S Final Days, Elsa Loftis, Dan Kelley

After the disheartening news of a full closure of the Oregon College of Art and Craft in 2019, the librarian and partners had the unpleasant task of dismantling and distributing the library’s unique collection. This article outlines that process in the context of other library closures and offers ideas for best practices and project management procedures for other libraries to consider if facing such a situation. The article is also a tribute to the unique collection and space that needed to be disassembled and how the collection lives on to make contributions at other institutions.

The Chinese American Librarians Association’s Academic Resources & Repository System (CALASYS) was established in 2013 and has been growing gradually ever since. What happens when you let a librarian blend their personal interest in graphic novels and manga with collection development and outreach, even if it falls outside of their primary work areas? This session will cover the basics of building and managing graphic novel and manga collections in academic libraries, the development of our library’s graphic novel and manga collection, as well as some of the ways in which our library has worked to increase student engagement using graphic novels and manga as a draw.

Earlier chapters of this book provide a history of copyright and libraries in the United States, a review of outdated language in the existing copyright code, and a discussion of actions by both copyright owners and the public to rebalance copyright outside of legislation. This chapter simply imagines what copyright could be if we disregard the known political and legal obstacles. It starts with no constraints, which one might argue is both impractical and foolish. Why spend time discussing what could be when treaties, self-interest, and powerful industry lobbies stand in the way?

The Library Has Infinite Streaming Content, But Are Users Infinitely Content? The Library Catalog Vs. Vendor Platform Discovery, Jian Wang, Elsa Loftis

Despite the widespread adoption of streaming video by academic libraries, there has been little discussion about how video content is discovered and accessed through the library catalog as compared to vendor platforms. This article explores the current status of video resources in the library catalog to better understand how users find and access streaming content. MARC records were evaluated, and searches were performed to gauge issues related to metadata quality and its impact on discovery. The study reveals new trends in how users access streaming content for teaching, learning, and research.

Academic and public library collections are developed based on the needs of the communities that surround them. Technology has increased the way users access information, and the way libraries offer information to their users. However, the accessibility of electronic resources for users with print disabilities remains an issue that has yet to have an equitable remedy. This paper identifies the challenges of visually impaired users, the developments in law, the current state of accessibility in academic and public library collections policies, and the current formats and products that are leading the way.
