The sustainability of archival institutions will be greatly affected by attempts to mitigate their carbon footprint to meet the challenges of global climate change. This paper explores how recordkeeping practices may enhance or undermine the sustainability of archives. To enhance sustainability, it is a common practice to increase the efficiency of recordkeeping practices. However, increases to efficiency may lead to a phenomenon known as Jevons’ Paradox. Jevons’ Paradox occurs when improvements in efficiency to a system or process result in an increase in use (instead of a decrease) of a resource. Creating Collections Through Collaboration: An Innovative Digital Library Project In Monteverde, Costa Rica, Laurie Kutner, Cindy Dykes, Stefanie Havelka

The proposed presentation will focus on a successful cross-cultural and cross-institutional collaborative model, involving four institutions, that was developed to create digital library collections of research-based information generated in the Monteverde Zone in Costa Rica. Addressing a need for the Monteverde community to have easy access to locally-produced research-based information, the digital collections contain unpublished research documents produced by area international study programs focusing on local sustainable community development, community health, and tropical ecology.

Addressing Information Needs In Sport Management, An Interdisciplinary Field, Kendra Spahr, Stephanie Wiegand

Sport management as a scholarly discipline is relatively new, and very few students who earn doctorates in this field go into academia, instead choosing to go into practice where salaries are much higher. Due to these circumstances, literature research in sport management is difficult for students as well as librarians, as very little primary research exists in published journals and books. This poster reviews challenges for librarians, the best information resources to support academic sport management programs, common student questions, and tangential research areas that support research in this discipline.

Describes a project of the VALE Cooperative Collection Management Committee to determine the circulation of recently purchased material and analyze its use in order to help assess collection development policies and practices regarding book selection and approval plans, as well as help identify trends, strengths and weaknesses in the collection, and to consider ameliorative strategies.

Interlibrary Loan Purchase-On-Demand: A Misleading Literature, Gerrit Van Dyk

Many libraries are engaging in interlibrary loan purchase-on-demand without fully acknowledging all of the costs of adding such titles to their collections. This study compares the costs of monograph interlibrary loans and the costs of monograph accession, including staffing overhead costs for both. In order to be truly cost-effective, interlibrary loan purchase-on-demand titles must have a minimum projected circulation, depending on the base price to purchase the item. A review of current patron-driven acquisitions models associated with interlibrary loan purchase-on-demand is included.

Building Digital Collections Through Partnerships: Byu's Harold B. Lee Library And Internet Archive, Elizabeth Smart

Since June 2009, BYU’s Harold B. Lee Library (HBLL) has worked in partnership with the Internet Archive (IA) to scan library holdings for public access in the Internet Archive’s digital library (www.archive.org). While many libraries send microfilm, monographs and serials to IA Scanning Centers for digital imaging on Scribe scanning stations, HBLL is one of very few academic libraries working with the Internet Archive in a “no-cash model” partnership. This partnership is based on an exchange of goods and services.

In order to manage the increase in e-book purchases and variety of suppliers, the SJSU Technical Services Department developed an e-book workflow that modeled, where possible, our print acquisitions workflow. This session will present our current e-book workflow, our use of unique Millennium load tables, and our efforts to add e-book statistics and license agreements to Millennium’s ERM module.

Developing A Library Value Indicator For A Disciplinary Population, Jeanne M. Brown

Three different ways of documenting library value were presented to fourth year landscape architecture students in the UNLV School of Architecture: a contingent valuation survey, a library calculator, and a survey to rate importance and impact of library services and features. Students used the three approaches, then discussed their experiences with the author. Their input suggested improvements in the instruments and provided feedback on possible positive and negative consequences of inviting this kind of valuing. Working with a focused collection and population provided a relatively safe environment to explore concerns about negative consequences.

Since I've come back from Spring Break, I've started working on a Collection Development project. So far I've been looking at books that people have given as gifts to the college and deciding whether or not we should have them in the collection. At this point I seem to be stuck thinking that we should just keep all of the books I've looked at so far because they all seem at least moderately interesting or helpful. Nongovernmental groups, state governmental agencies, and of course, the federal government put timely, authoritative, practice-oriented reports up on the Web with great speed. This presentation will provide the rationale and procedures for adding freely available Web sites to the online catalog to augment and support curricular needs and provide some mechanisms for students to find and access the resources easily.
